webfact
World Cup spending to riseBANGKOK: -- Kasikorn Research Center forecasts this year’s World Cup football matches will stimulate domestic spending of around 21.6 billion baht among the people. The research centre said that the World Cup 2014, which will kick off on June 13, could reel in an income for relevant food and consumer products within the country by around 21.6 billion baht.Out of the figure, 13.5 billion baht is expected from viewing equipment purchases, 8 billion baht from food and beverage businesses, and 100 million in sports clothes and equipment sales.Although most of the football matches taken place in Brazil will be aired late at night in Thailand, the centre believes that the number of audiences waiting to watch the matches will remain high, as the viewers will have more channels to watch their favourite teams. At the same time, prices of goods will increase as well. Many entrepreneurs have also been launching new marketing strategies ahead of the popular football competition, which should also help to stimulate more spending among the public, added the centre.Full story: http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/world-cup-spending-rise/ -- Thai PBS 2014-06-

JeremyBowskill
Thais will wait until after the final to buy shirts etc so they are sure to be identified with winners. No need to wait just buy 2 shirts, Argentina and Brazil and you are sure to have the winning shirt. Can't really see how buying knock off shirts will do much for the economy though.........

I've seen some national shirts being worn already but would guarantee they will disappear as soon as a particular country is eliminated.
CiaranO
Its an interesting report but very flawed i suspect. I cant see that many people staying up at 11am - 2 am and 5am to sit and watch games all night. Also if you want to watch the matches you have to pay. Then also tourist areas such as Phuket today announced there will be no late openings for bars or restaurants so tourists wont be watching the games so no extra money on alcohol etc.

JeremyBowskill
Statistically no team other than a south American team has ever won it in south America, but there's always a first I guess................. noitom
Thais long to be part of the world cup activities and level in every aspect of life. Watching on TV as other countries play it out and compete is the closest that Thais will ever come to championship level competition.
