Working in Thailand - visa options

I have been offered a job at a large company in Thailand.

I am currently on the first half of a Double entry Tourist Visa - it expires in 2 weeks, so I will probably need to get a month's extension from the Immigration Office.

What procedure should I be following to get the Non-O and Work Permit required? The company offering me the job should (in theory) be able to organise all the necessary documents, but I would like to have some expert advice.

Speak with the companies HR department. It should be their responsibility to assist you.

I agree. But I have been in a similar situation before a couple of years ago. The HR department in question gave me the wrong documents, and I could not get the the Non-B visa I needed in Penang.

I would rather not take the risk a second time.

1) Company applies for work permit

2) Letter of approval received from Labor Ministry

3) Get all required paperwork from company

4) Travel out of the country to apply for a Non-B

Does this sound right? The contract would be for 1 year initially.

Do you know roughly how many days it takes from applying for a work permit to receiving the letter?

added note.. the company MUST supply a big part of the documentation for your #1. You go with the company representative to the Labor Ministry, usually.

I can only report on mine, but it took about 3 weeks for me to get that letter of approval before I could go for the Non-B.

That's a school which are easier than others.

Application to WP Letter of Approval, depends on paper work, can take anything from 7 days to 7 weeks to 7 months, depends on your local Labour Dept.

Assume 1 month+ as an average.

Once you get your Non 'B' visa - re-enter Thailand, get the 90 day non 'b' entry stamp in your passport, take this to Labour and then they will complete the Blue Book (TT5) issue process.

Once you have the WP Booklet in hand you can legally start work.
