Bangkok’s Blue Line underground train construction passes 50% mark

BANGKOK, 22 August 2014 (NNT) - The construction of Bangkok’s Blue Line underground train system has made a significant progress and the first tunnelling under the Chao Phraya River is set to commence soon.

Mr. Plew Trivisvavet, CEO of Ch. Kanrchang Public Company Limited which is in charge of the construction of the extended part of the Blue Line underground train system between Sanam Chai and Tha Phra, said Wednesday that the progress of the project has already passed the 50% mark.

He said that the construction will reach a pivotal point in two weeks, when the tunnelling under the Chao Phraya River — the first of its kind — will begin.

The planned tunnel will be 30-38 meters under the ground, according to Mr. Plew.

The CEO of Ch, Karnchang, one of Thailand’s leading infrastructure developers and builders, added that the company is ready to be a part of the government’s 2.4-trillion-baht transport infrastructure development plan, which the National Council for Peace and Order approved late last month.

Mr. Plew went on to say that Ch. Karnchang is expected to record more than 33 billion baht in revenue this year after reporting over 18 billion baht in revenue during the first six months of 2014, citing some 100 billion baht worth of construction project the company has been working on at the moment.

wish they'd spread the infrastructure spending to other large cities as well. Stop making bangkok the hub of everything, spread it out. Too many people here already

A very worthy sentiment but there are no other "large cities" in Thailand in comparison to BKK.

Greater BKK which has a population in excess of over 10m people is obviously in great need of what has been much delayed plans for mass transit expansion (it is a good decade behind where it should be in building these lines. eg. The Blue Line Extension was originally meant to commence in 2006 but was delayed for years).

There is no other city in Thailand with more than .5m -.7m people. That is not to say that those cities shouldn't have mass transit , they should. It just recognises that most of the funds will go to where most of the pop and the greatest needs are.

That being said, there are current plans for BRTs in Chiang Mai, Khon Kean, Korat and Chiang Rai.

Phuket and Pattaya also has long standing plans for elevated light rail systems.

The fact that those cities have not yet built any proper mass transit is primarily due to the fact that decision makers have not thought that it was important and residents have not lobbied enough for it. It is also reflective of the general dysfunctional nature of transport planning in the country which has for decades been obsessed with expanding road based transport while neglecting mass transit options.

Population moves according to the opportunities and infrastructure. If nothing is ever invested in Universities, hospitals, transportation etc in other towns, they will never grow,they will never attract people. Look what happened to Shenzhen. But Thailand is not China.

Population moves according to the opportunities and infrastructure. If nothing is ever invested in Universities, hospitals, transportation etc in other towns, they will never grow,they will never attract people. Look what happened to Shenzhen. But Thailand is not China.
