According to Khaosod Online, Somjai Boonkhong said his family from Phetchabun came to live on the mountain in Chanumarn since he was a boy in 1972. After learning about Somjai’s story from local people in the district, Khaosod dispatched its reporter to meet him at the mountain. The reporter spotted him catching fish in a creek when he arrived at the area. Somjai showed his makeshift hut to the reporter. The hut is made of some tree branches and old canvas. He has no electricity and has only some tools for catching fish, some pots and knives. Somjai said his family joined the communists to fight against the government in 1972. After the Communist Party of Thailand was disbanded and the fighting ended, he decided to hide in the wild and would not return to the civilized world. Somjai said he felt happy to live alone and he could find things to eat in the wild so he has been living alone. He said he has never fallen ill. He said he finished only Grade 2 and he does not know how to read and write. But he likes to listen to news programs on radio. He got a transistor radio from friends. Although he has been living alone in the wild, his friends came up the mountain to take him to vote in all elections. He said he has no farmland but he can live on fish and frogs, bamboo shoots, wild vegetables and mushrooms. Certainly a lifestyle that is not my idea of fun but each unto his own. Well he seems happy enough with his lot so who are we to criticize let alone attempt to ''rehabilitate'' him?
