String of blasts rock Pattani

PATTANI: -- A string of bomb explosions rocked five places in Pattani town on early hours of Thursday knocking down power supply for over half and hour.

Nobody was injured but several shop houses which included car showroom, convenience store were damaged by the explosions.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) police still sealed the bomb-ridden areas for explosive clearances this morning as they were uncertain if any bomb trap was left behind to harm the EOD team or not.

Pattani police chief Pol Col Kirati Waeyuso reported the first bomb exploded at 2.00 am in front of Isuzu car showroom and the second bomb shortly afterwards, 30 metres from the first scene, in front of a second hand motorcycle shop. The two places are located on Nong Chik road.

In both blasts, severe damages were inflicted on the shops and vehicles parked inside and on the road. A 7-Eleven convenience store nearby was also damaged by the blast.

The third bomb went off at the liquor selling shop on Yarang road. Several cars were damaged and houses on the other side of the roads were also damaged.

The court explosion rocked a power supply pole on Bana-Laemg Nok road. The powerful blast broke down the pole, and also brought down four other poles, causing a power blackout for over half an hour.

Security checks on surveillance cameras in nearby places and in the town showed the bomb attacks were conducted by at least 10 insurgents riding on motorcycles.

Security officials believed the attack was to revenge authorities over last week’s clash which four militants were killed and over a dozen arrested in Thing Yang Daeng district.

Benny Hill would say to ban all helmets and balaclavas while riding a motorbike.

Oh, whoops, I saw that was the mayor's plan in the Thai news a few weeks ago.

Come on Mr P, time to use article 44!!

But of course it is easier to get the real dangerous people using Facebook...............coffee1.gif

So much for the not a coup being staged to prevent daily terrorist attacks and avert civil war, or is the South in the 'Too difficult' pile?

I do not understand why the government wants to negotiate with these terrorists. They should be negotiating up in the northern part.

I'm very surprised theres no news article on the army stating they will hold their hands up and accept blame for an operation down in the South recently where locals claimed innocent people were shot and killed, but the army's defence was but there was drug dealers and drug users there too!!! War on drugs is far from over it would seem.

It's in the BP today

This may sound unbelievable, but even the military are capable of learning from past mistakes.

Of course if you think an all out war with air attacks like in Jemen, Syria or Irak is justified ... ...

The South is in the 'far from my bed' pile. Really local and of little interest to most Thai. Not many Thai are upset with the situation there or with how various Thai PMs handle the situation. It would seem only a golf caddy cared, but he probably wanted to atone for his silly 'weak from fasting' gaff.

The 'unrest' November, 2013 till 22nd of May, 2014 was much more damaging to the country. Posters here have told me the PDRC activities alone already cost hundreds of billions of Baht. The NorthEast was getting restless because of unpaid bills, some Thai MPs were openly talking about splitting off the North.

Now that's more reason to step in.

Yes? What is your opinion?

Lets hope the Junta continue with the success in the South as they did in the Capital, Bangkok.

The majority pray for this success as they yearn stability.

I don't think calling the Muslims in for 'attitude re-adjustment' is going to cut it down South.

SOUTH CRISIS
Blasts rock Pattani, power poles felled

THE NATION

Nine new areas closely monitored as more attacks feared

BANGKOK: -- EXPLOSIONS ROCKED four locations in Pattani's Muang district, while five power poles were blown up in separate incidents on Wednesday night, causing heavy property damage and blackouts in a wide area. However, no casualties were reported.

In response, security officials are keeping nine locations in the province under close watch after receiving tips that they might be targeted next. The locations being monitored include Diana Mall, the night market, Doctor

Wit market, the clock-tower traffic circle, a municipal market near the central mosque, a market by the Pattani River, areas near Charoen Pradit Road and the downtown flea market.

The four blasts in downtown areas caused heavy damage to people's property, including 42 motorcycles and three vehicles. Several offices, an auto showroom, a few convenience stores and many houses also sustained damage.

Drowned in darkness

Meanwhile, attached bombs brought down five power poles in the district's suburbs, with a man getting injured when his motorcycle slammed into one of the poles after the area became pitch-dark.

Explosives Ordnance Disposal personnel said all the bombs had 20 to 25 kilograms of explosives in small cooking-gas cylinders. Security sources, meanwhile, believe two men wearing caps on a motorcycle planted the bombs, which were later triggered by mobile-phone signals.

A source said it should be easy to track down the masterminds as it looks like the same people are behind planning and implementing the attacks.

Military spokesman Colonel Pramot Phrom-in said the bombs were detonated one minute apart and the attacks were aimed at discrediting the authorities and instigating chaos among residents. He called on the media and the public not to link the latest attacks to a recent shooting of four men in Pattani's Thung Yang Daeng district.

Meanwhile, Army chief General Udomdej Sitabutr said he had ordered that the probe into those killings as well as the related detention of four people be carried out transparently. This was in response to many local residents and relatives of the dead men and four detainees insisting they had nothing to do with the insurgency down South.
