According to the Excise Department, the impounded drink led to a loss of 980,000 baht in excise duty. The busting of the illegal alcohol distiller is part of the Excise Department’s campaign aimed at stemming an influx of illegal goods into the market. The department has in addition assigned a special unit to observe sales activities of alcohol outlets and bars around educational institutions to deter underage customers. Those spotting illicit sales or production of alcohol can call the Excise Department’s hotline 1713 around the clock. -- NNT 2015-07-
halloween
Funny that you never seem to hear of mass poisoning from illegal alcohol here. Chennai (Madras) seems to stick in my mind as a hot spot for this, and occasional instances in Bali.

casualbiker
I'm guessing Lao kao. Thailands legal moonshine ( as long as the minimal tax is paid) I always wonder who works out the losses, as Lao kao is taxed a minimal amount! You can buy 400ml bottles for 25b in 7/11. And, where have you ever lived where you thought the government spent money wisely? Why would you give your hard earned to someone you know is going to spill half of it before it does anyone any good?

Quite a bit is spent giving free room and board to people who don't pay their taxes.
dageurreotype
Who are they trying to kid? Practically all the booze here is counterfeit and is owned by the wealthiest families in Thailand. Perhaps it's more to do with competition than taxes. Pfft.
