Less Chinese tourists in Chiang Mai as road travel regulations bite

Now that those stingy obnoxious Chinese can't cramp 6 people into a small sedan and travel to Thailand

and be ' tourist ' on a shoestring, they stop coming, who'd would think that such a small change of not

allowed to travel beyond CK will stem the tide of million cheap Charlies.....

Actually the cars coming across the border are expensive, usually imported, Audi, Volkswagen, ect. I'm not the expert but my guess would be that those that are driving are spending considerably more than the cheap flights and tours from China.

Seriously! The Chinese who drove, all had very expensive cars such as Land Rovers Benz's BMW and Audis. I even saw a Rolls with Chinese plates. 10 car caravans and not one under 5m baht.

Once again the Thais have shot their foot off. I'm sure those people spent quite a bit! Now they have cheap Charlie excursions. And spend diddly squat. TIT

Many Chinese are avoiding Thailand now, because most hotels have reduced the size of their buffets and are using smaller plates.

Saw a bunch of the HUNGRY HOARD at the CNX Grand View last week. No manners, push and shove and pile so much on the plate, they almost needed a Block and Tackle to lift the plate to the table.

If they are Offended at not being allowed to create further mayhem on our roads by preventing them going South, too bad and good riddance!

A post containing Thai language has been removed as well as the replies. English is the only acceptable language anywhere on ThaiVisa including Classifieds, except within the Thai language forum, where of course using Thai is allowed.

Other nonsense posts and replies have been removed.

380,000,000,000 spent by 8700000 tourist? Around 44000 baht each? Nah.... Don't think so?not by any chinese tourist I've ever seen!

It said 380 million Baht not 380 Billion Baht, so the real number is only 43.67 baht which I dont believe that..

The Admin posted article has been taken from Sanook as per the link, and translated into English for this site.

I found the figures reported confusing and asked Opal her thought.

From the thai article she said the figure was 3.8 saan laan which she takes it to be 3.8 x saan (one hundred thousand) laan (million).

Still scratching head a bit, I asked her to write the figure down numerically - 380,000,000,000 was the result.

If this is correct, it would be getting on for 44k baht each.

What was lacking from the article was the average length of stay by Chinese visitors.

January past we were staying at the Grandview Hotel and there was no shortage of Chinese tour guests, and the previous year at the Imperial Mae Ping, again coach loads staying.

Therefore being in a 1500-3000 baht a night bracket of accommodation (less negotiated package discounts) the figures could well be a feasible estimate.

Not necessarily. Many of them simply drove nice cars (some of which were rentals) but they weren't spending all that much. In any case how much they were spending is irrelevant, they can still come by plane or go through a travel agency if they want to drive here.

Either way, apart from maybe amending the rules to allow travel throughout the country it's good the law is in place. Too much traffic congestion and accidents occurring. Of course they won't scrap the regulation altogether.

Lots of traffic congestion, accidents attributed to these Chinese drivers in the past. No one cares what they're driving - they came to Thailand for free, they didn't pay for road tax, us Thai residents pay that. I have nothing against a small number arriving by car under the new rules because they now have to pay an entry fee and travel with the guidance of a travel agency.

The old system was terribly unfair for Thais - considering Thais have never been able to drive freely to China. What a blatant double standard, though luckily this has now changed.

actually a lot of suvs travelling together in a caravan. On the 1048 highway they had a police car escort for 5 or 6 chinese vehicles. I have seen outfitted suvs in aPTT station around Nakon Sawan. They use a lot of differzent vehicles never seen any motor homes though

I think under the new rules they need a police escort, which is reasonable. Under the old rules, there was no need - I would often see 10 vehicles driving by themselves causing congestion and near accidents as they suddenly all stopped on the side of the road.

Saw plenty of motor homes in the past, which are now banned altogether (although the authorities may allow them in again in the future). If you were in Thailand between February and March this year, there's no way you could have missed them.
