Ex-Thai government blamed in suspects‘ deaths

BANGKOK, Thailand - The army commander who led a coup in September said Monday the government of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra had executed suspected Islamic insurgents expelled to Thailand from Malaysia.

Malaysia became "reluctant" to cooperate in handing over suspected insurgents after Thaksin‘s government executed some of them, he said, without providing details.

More than 1,800 people have died from violence in Thailand‘s three southernmost, Muslim-majority provinces — Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat — since an Islamic insurgency flared up in January 2004.

Sondhi blamed Thaksin‘s regime for mishandling the situation in southern Thailand, and he appealed to the Thai public to give the current military-appointed interim government time to deal with the problem.

Human rights groups have long accused Thaksin‘s government of carrying out the "disappearance" — and presumed execution — of insurgent suspects in southern Thailand.
