World Animal Protection: No license for tiger farm please

BANGKOK: -- The World Animal Protection’s branch office in Thailand has demanded the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation to withdraw license or suspend the issuance of license to the Tiger’s Temple in Kanchanaburi to raise tigers.

Mrs Supaporn Last, director of World Animal Protection Thailand, said Thursday that, during last week, more than 20 foreign news agencies reported Tiger’s Temple in Kanchanaburi which was closed down last year by the department for illegally trafficking in tigers was recently awarded a license to operate a tiger farm under a new company.

She said that she herself was very concerned about the report which was yet to be verified and the World Animal Protection head office in Britain had contacted her to find out whether the report was true or not.

To find out the truth, Mrs Supaporn said she had sent a letter to the department asking for information about the license for tiger farm and urging the department not to grant any new license for tiger farm.

WAP senior advisor Dr Jan Schmidt-Burbach, meanwhile, said that tiger farm has not helped in conserving tiger species but, on the contrary, cause sufferings to the big cats.

Tranquilized tigers in small cages is animal torture . Tranquilized tigers outside small cages in direct contact to the public is always risky ...

The best would be to create huge natural reserves where they can survive alone . But no money to be made with this , won't happen .

These are beautiful creatures , they need protection from mankind .

I personnaly would not go to visit a place like the tiger temple ... these tigers are tranquilized , but they are still wild animals that people cannot control 100 % .

Misplaced zeal. These animals are easy to breed. There is no impact on wild populations. Cats love living in captivity - they get an easy life and a lot of attention. These places are no different from zoos. They just need licensing and regulating properly.

It's far worse to put a bird in a cage, when the birds are taken from the wild. Apart from the clear torment of the trapped bird, wild populations are being eradicated this way. I suggest everyone who is fussing about the tiger temple turns their attention to outlawing the trapping of wild birds - a far more controversial and destructive and immoral practice.

The Tiger Temple is and was a poor excuse for tiger conservation and should not be allowed to reopen ! easy as that !!!!!

How much misunderstand is possible over this place? It had nothing to do with tiger conservation, any more than a sheep petting farm is about sheep conservation. The tigers in this menagerie were not even of the same species as Thai wild tigers.

One last time: this place had no impact on wild populations of tigers. Tigers are easily bred in captivity, and these tigers do not come from the wild. There's no question of introducing such tigers into the wild - absolutely no question. It's a zoo, and if you close this, then to be consistent you have to close all zoos all over the world.

If, due to lax regulation, some tigers were sold on the black market, then arguably such a source provides a buffer that actually protects wild populations - which is far more important - until such time as China shakes off its reprehensible craving for tiger parts.

"These animals are easy to breed. There is no impact on wild populations." - this is complete rubbish. These animals can end up in the endangered species trade....they contribute to the demand and also make it more difficult to find out where animals are being poached from.

The establishments that exploit captive tigers do so with scant regard for the welfare of the animals - poor house and speed breeding for example.

Also one of the most serious spin-offs from these circuses (they aren't really zoos) is that they promulgate ignorance about the real situation with conservation and wildlife - They convince people like yourself that they are not doing any harm to the conservation of wildlife  when in reality they are one of the major threats to the environment themselves.
