kmart
There is a shop right next door to Foodland (Pattaya Klang rd, nr Sukumvit) in Pattaya that specialises in culinary / cooking utensils. It would be the first place I'd look..... Can't remember the name of the shop though....?

steppenfaerie
You could also try other upmarket places like Siam Paragon and Central Chit Lom, which have a wide range of imported goods. There's also a big Villa Market in Thong Lor (J Avenue, Sukhumvit 55, Thong Lor 15) that caters to the large Japanese expat base living in the area, which may also be worth a try. Good luck! cathyy
We can better help you with a few more details. Are the knives Japanese in manufacture or Japanese in style? Or both? The best Japanese manufactured knives are Shun and Global, but neither makes knives with bamboo handles and holes in the blades. Sekiryu makes both a santoku and sashimi knive with holes in the blade, but at those prices ($19 for the santoku, $24 for the sashimi) I'd wonder about the quality. You need to find out his price range; that will determine the brand he can afford. A set of good Japanese style knives is a great kitchen addition. jasreeve17
"Good set of knives." "for a friend." Yeah, OK. You can pick up a samarai sword down by soi 5. Make sure you bury her properly tho.
