The shooting occurred late Friday when an SUV pulled up and two people inside began firing at a group gathered in the neighbourhood before driving away, according to police.

Two Victims in Critical Condition

Police said 12 people — eight men and four women aged between 17 and 47 — suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to four different hospitals for treatment.

Two male victims were listed in critical condition. One had been shot in the thigh. Authorities did not immediately release details on the other critically injured victim.

Another man sustained injuries of an unknown nature but declined medical treatment.

Initial Response

Officers were first dispatched following reports of a single shooting victim. Upon arrival, they found a woman with two gunshot wounds to her back and a man who had suffered four graze wounds to his back. Both were reported to be in fair condition.

Police have not announced any arrests, and detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Violence on Juneteenth

The shooting took place on Juneteenth, the US holiday commemorating the end of slavery.

Earlier in the day, former US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed the first visitors to the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago's South Side.

Chicago police said at least 21 people had been shot across the city since Friday evening, with four fatalities recorded.

Local anti-violence advocate Donovan Price described the mass shooting as especially tragic given the significance of the holiday.

"It should be celebrating," he told CBS News. "Fireworks should not turn into gunshots."

Investigation Under Way

Authorities have not released information on a possible motive, and further details were not immediately available.

Detectives are continuing to gather evidence and seek information about the occupants of the SUV involved in the attack.
