Heathrow cannabis courier jailed after Snapchat Thailand trip

A 19-year-old from Southampton, UK, has been jailed after arriving at Heathrow Airport with more than 20kg of cannabis in luggage following a trip from Bangkok.

Noah Barker was recruited via Snapchat by a crime group which offered him a free holiday in Thailand and payment to bring an item back to Britain. He was stopped by Border Force at Heathrow on 10 July carrying cannabis valued at about GBP600,000.

Barker, of Derby Road, Southampton, was sentenced at Southampton Crown Court on Friday 4 September 2026, to three years and eight months for smuggling Class B drugs and violent disorder.

Suitcases contained 41 sealed packages

Investigators found 41 vacuum-sealed packages in two suitcases provided to Barker. After his arrest, he said he knew they contained either cannabis or cocaine.

When Border Force officers asked about the contents at Heathrow arrivals, Barker told them: "it is cannabis".

The unemployed teenager, who smokes cannabis, admitted the smuggling offence and received a 16-month prison term for it. He never received the payment promised by the crime group.

The remaining two years and four months of his total sentence related to a violent disorder charge from a Hampshire Police investigation into the Henry Nowak protests on 2 June.

Warning for travellers leaving Thailand

The case is a reminder for foreign residents and visitors in Thailand that accepting luggage, transport arrangements or an apparently free trip from people met online can have severe consequences at both Thai and overseas borders.

National Crime Agency senior investigating officer Mark Abbott said Barker had been motivated by money and knew the act was illegal and dangerous.

"Like other cannabis smugglers, Barker was motivated by money. He knew he was doing something illegal and fraught with danger but did it anyway," Abbott said.

"As well as a life-changing criminal conviction, couriers' future career and travel prospects can be wrecked by smuggling drugs."

He said the NCA would continue working with Border Force and Thai partners to tackle cannabis smuggling to the UK.

The NCA has announced a new crackdown with Thai authorities, alongside a social-media campaign aimed at deterring British people targeted by criminal groups. It says the number of people caught bringing cannabis into Britain by air rose from 142 in 2023 to 801 in 2024, then 976 in 2025. Some 600 suspected couriers were arrested at UK airports in the first six months of this year.

Thai authorities introduced new fines in July for people caught smuggling cannabis, according to the report. The NCA stated that the penalty is GBP680 per kilogram, meaning the stated average haul of 26kg could bring a fine of almost GBP18,000; those unable to pay face a two-year prison sentence.

He only got 16 months for smuggling cannabis, so would have been eligible for release after 6 months if that was his only offence

Oh, you’re looking for a muppet to haul a suitcase filled with 30 keys of dope from Bangers to Europe, no questions asked, you say?

Enter the vast reservoir of young gits sitting around in their bed sits in Blighty, waiting for the phone to ring. They’ll do it for nothing more than a cattle class flight ticket to the LOS, a couple of puffs, and a few quid.

Half of them will get nabbed at Heathrow and end up doing a nickel. But no worries. The other half of the half wits will make it through.

Job done.

So why has he been jailed and most of the women recently caught got suspended sentences 🙄

Maybe the violent disorder charge had something to do with it. Seems it was the more serious offence. at least, it got double the jail time.

Well if the punishment is 16 months jail time for 20kg of cannabis, of which less than half will be served, maybe the reward is worth the risk, depending on your personal circumstances at the time.

And this guys circumstances don’t appear to have been too bright given the outstanding other charge. So a couple of weeks or so holiday sounded good, given that he probably knew he was going to be jailed anyway.

Quite why the police talk up the severity of the offence, when the punishment is basically a slap on the wrist, I don’t know.

“Like other cannabis smugglers, Barker was motivated by money. He knew he was doing something illegal and fraught with danger but did it anyway," Abbott said.”

Fraught with danger? Jail him for 6 years instead of 16 months and that statement might be true.

Jailed for transporting beneficial herbs ?

Silly, isn't it? Except that he was recruited by organized criminals who undoubtedly are involved in harder drugs and other crimes such as human trafficking. Probably Chinese mafia. So not as innocent as one might think. At age 19 he is young enough to turn his life around, hope he does.

Innocent?

He was also jailed for a longer period on another charge. I don’t think he was innocent at all.
