Republicans Break With Trump Again to Support Ukraine Aid

Republicans in the US House of Representatives joined Democrats on Thursday to approve a bill providing military and reconstruction support for Ukraine, marking another public break with President Donald Trump by members of his own party.

The Ukraine Support Act passed by a vote of 226 to 195 after 18 Republicans crossed party lines to support the measure. The legislation would allocate more than $1 billion in aid for Ukraine and authorize a further $8 billion in financing loans to support the country's defence efforts.

Despite clearing the House, the bill faces long odds of becoming law. It must still be approved by the Senate and signed by Trump, who has not indicated support for the measure.

Republicans Defy Party Leadership

The vote was made possible after Republican supporters joined Democrats in signing a discharge petition, a procedural move that allowed lawmakers to bypass House leadership and force the legislation onto the floor for consideration.

The outcome highlights growing divisions within the Republican Party over foreign policy and the administration's approach to international conflicts.

It follows another rare display of dissent earlier this week, when four House Republicans joined Democrats to pass a largely symbolic resolution aimed at preventing Trump from taking further military action in Iran.

Pressure Builds Over Iran Policy

Although the White House dismissed that resolution as an unconstitutional attempt to limit presidential authority, its passage added to pressure on the administration as the conflict with Iran continues.

The administration has also retreated from plans to establish an “anti-weaponisation” fund after criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans.

Republican lawmakers had warned they could block a key immigration bill if the administration proceeded with plans that would have directed public funds to Trump supporters, creating another source of tension within the president's party.

Zelensky Seeks Direct Talks With Putin

The House vote came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky renewed efforts to revive peace negotiations with Russia.

In an open letter addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Zelensky called for a face-to-face meeting between the two leaders, arguing that direct engagement offered the best chance of ending the war.

He said it would be a mistake to wait until the conflict once again becomes a primary focus of US attention and urged a full ceasefire during any future negotiations.

Putin rejected the idea of a ceasefire earlier on Thursday.

Trump later said he believed a meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders would be beneficial.

Peace Efforts Remain Stalled

Attempts to negotiate an end to the war have made little progress in recent months. Previous rounds of talks held in Geneva, Abu Dhabi and Istanbul have failed to produce a breakthrough.

Zelensky's appeal coincided with Putin's attendance at a major economic forum in Saint Petersburg.

The letter also referenced a Ukrainian drone strike on the outskirts of the city a day earlier. Meanwhile, Russian-installed authorities in Crimea accused Ukraine of attacks that killed four people in Simferopol. Ukraine said it had targeted a fuel depot.

I know the continual aid to Ukraine is a burden. Hopefully it will be over soon( War and needing Aid)

At least we are getting real time info and experience on what changes we need to make for our own military spending.

The UK can support a long lost bad cause in Ukraine.

But won't support UK pensioners in Thailand.

Unbelievable.

The downfall of Don continues in a most humiliating manner. MAGA members and many supporters are very disappointed with his recent actions, his incredible failure with Iran, and his stubborn unwillingness to address things that matter most to Americans, like inflation and high prices. Instead This mindless goon continues to insist that the economy is roaring and that the average American is doing very well. Easy for a multi-billionaire to say especially one who is grifting from people who are struggling to get by.

That kind of denial is both ignorant and a recipe for disaster in the midterms.

Not to the extent of aid to Israel.

Israel has received hundreds of billions of dollars in U.S. foreign aid in the post–World War II era for economic and military assistance and has privileged access to the most advanced U.S. military platforms and technologies. https://www.cfr.org/articles/us-aid-israel-four-charts

Anyone interested in learning how far Israel is entrenched in the US watch the Theo Van and John Kiriakou podcast. There is a lot more going on behind the scenes than most know.

Israel is a very small country about the size of Wales or New Jersey in the US and it's hardly a third world country.

So maybe the US taxpayers should be asking why they have given more than $300 billion and are currently giving $3.8 billion every year to Israel.

If the US was a dog Israel would be a flea on its back.

US Govt. is run by the military industrial complex. They own half the politicians and the other half are owned by Israel. War is good for business-their business.

Trump tried to end all these foreign disasters. He tried to withdraw from Syria in his first term, the Pentagon said fucck you. He's trying to get out of the Ukraine mess started by the CIA and NATO but the Neo Cons in Congress keep voting for more war. In case you think I'm a Trump sycophant, I think Iran is a major blunder on his part. Then again, Israel via Epstein probably has enough dirt on him to keep him doing their bidding.

I really don’t understand why people label New Jersey as the armpit of the USA. Clearly, they haven’t visited Newark recently, where the vibrant culture and resilient spirit tell a different story.

It's a long way from the Newark riots! When I was a kid, we did replace the Garden State with the Garbage State, though. Big and Little Snake Hills in the Jersey meadows built mountains of NYC's garbage.

Do you know the magazine and website Weird NJ? Thing are just weirder in Jersey.

The world's biggest ignoramus continues to promote lies and continues to demonstrate an extreme level of aversion to truth and reality.

“They were very close to having a nuclear weapon. I terminated the deal. Then I sent the B-2 bombers in about nine, 10 months ago. And they obliterated, totally obliterated, the site. And I saved it,” Trump said. “We had a choice. We could let them have a nuclear weapon, or we could go along and have some beautiful days. But they would have, you know, it’s a judgment. They would’ve used a nuclear weapon.”

Later in the interview, Trump reiterated: “If I didn’t go in there with the B-2 bombers, they would right now have a nuclear weapon, and it could be that half of the world would be eradicated already.”

Trump also said during the interview that major arms of the Iranian military were “gone” as a result of the current war.

“Their navy is gone. Their air force is gone. Their anti-aircraft is gone,” Trump said.

Busted. Total lies.

He said at another point in the interview: “In three months, I’ve demolished the navy, the air force, anti-aircraft. They have no radar. They have nothing.” Huh? Is that why the war continues to this day Don?

This is exaggerated. NBC News has reported that half of the country’s unconventional navy remains intact after weeks of bombing. The unconventional navy includes small “fast boats” typically used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, Tehran’s hard-line military force. Those forces are key to Iran’s ability to influence international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and because of the nature of that navy, it has been harder for the U.S. to identify and target those forces.

The Pentagon has said the U.S. military has destroyed about 90% of Iran’s conventional navy and more than 95% of Iran’s naval mines, though. Defense officials have also said more than 80% of Iran’s “missile facilities” are gone, suggesting locations where Iran constructs missiles and other weaponry could be targeted should operations resume.

Trump was also pressed by Welker on his campaign pledge not to start any new wars.

“I didn’t guarantee no war. Why would I have built the strongest military in the world?” Trump said. “I built our military.”

Huh?

Trump said while campaigning in Pennsylvania in 2024: “I will not send you to fight and die in stupid foreign wars that never end. I will not send our sons and daughters to go fight for a war in a country that you’ve never heard of. We’re not going to do it. We’re going to bring our troops home, and we’re going to focus on America First.”

And in his November 2024 victory speech, Trump said: “I’m not going to start a war. I’m going to stop wars.”

Not to mention some really gorgeous rural areas and some amazing areas along the Hudson River, but I think it's the whole South Amboy, Meadowlands, South Kearny, Elizabeth area that really gives it a bad name. I remember Hoboken back in the day when it was a pretty nasty area, but it certainly has changed.
