  1. The curry fellow did a super chicken masala with fresh off the hot plate japati . I was in there quite a while back . The shop is inconspicous . If you are coming from the petrol station at the end of the park you would be taking the last possible left before the big bridge , I think that is the second last street , keeping in mind it is a one way system in that area . The shop is a few hundred meters in on the right hand side of the road . There was a sort of make shift sign in Thai , Punjabi(?) and English . Any way , if you get lost due to my crap directions you will be more likely to find it by mistake . It is in there somewhere.

  2. There are some shops in old town ubon you can look at ( those 3 blocks north of the river and east of the bridge).

The weekend market tween Big C and Makro is useful.

Chatuchuck (?sp) Market in BKK would be the mother ship though.

I will have to get round that bit more thoroughly . I have found the bakery supplier there and a turbaned fellow who does excellent curries with japati . Where aboots did ye see the old curiosity shoppe ?

  3. I think the clones would scare the living daylights out of my missus and confuse the offspring and then there is the question of where to keep em . In my honest opinion one is enough . The Ubon Ratchathani Wives.

  4. Hello Peeps ,

I enjoy visiting second hand shops and markets when I am working abroad . On my trips to Ubon I have not been able to find anywhere selling junk and bric a brac . I am particularly interested in old vinyl records , books , posters and so on . Although I do like a good scrap yard .

Any pointers would be highly appreciated .

    Ta Luke

  5. i think neil diamond was the solitary man, johnny walked the line.

Govoner you are correct Neil Diamond wrote and sang the song, but Johonny Cash also sang it to. I think those of us who live in the forgoten places are more Cash than Diamond types, Jim from somewhere in the jungle

  6. I mostly fly in to SV at around midnight . I came in on a delayed flight to SV one time and missed my Nakonair last bus up to Ubon leaving about 0100 am . I took a taxi up to Mochit any way and got on an aircon bus at about 0345 am. This bus got me into Ubon at around1600 pm the next day as it was a stopper . I still had a fair way to travel . I would say wait at the airport and get the first domestic flight up country in the morning . Or you can get a taxi . I took a taxi up for 6000 once it was about 6-7 hours . I just sit it out at the airpport these days .

Let us know if you find a good route .

    cheers and good luck .

  7. Any body done the bless the new hoose celebration ? A bit of an al nighter each time but I just sit out the back by the bonfire with some hooch and wait for the dawn . I do like the way all folks chip in with the labour and cooking and cleaning the kit from the temple . The upside for me is we don't need to do it again . I love life in Issan.

I've only had a house blessing once, hopefully that's it. But it was a fun occasion, and I too am always impressed by the way people in the village pitch in to share the work load; whether for blessings, weddings, funerals, whatever.

The night before the big event, I awoke around 3 am, heard voices, and saw a couple of dozen people, all ages, outside my sister-in-law's house working so hard to get things ready for our blessing. It seemed that only the special ones - me because I am a farang who couldn't be expected to know just what the hell to do anyway, and the father-in-law because of age and seniority - didn't lift a finger to help!

Unlike one of the earlier posters, I actually like Thai folk music - but not the damned volume!

    Elwood

We have had it three times but the first one was the busiest where the elders married me and my dearest . We were all woven together with the string , a very happy day .

On another note I had a few whisky sessions with an old boy , now sadly deceased, from round the soi and he was a marvel on the khaen . He on the pipes and his old buddy doing the mouth music thing . We drank and played and I was reminded that some things are the same and ye can't beat whisky and pipe music !

  8. Cardholder ,

You won't need a Chinese visa for HK or Macau but if you want to visit Shenzen or other cities you will . If you are going over during the week a trip out to Mui Wo and then the Big Buddha is worth the ferry fair and you will avoid the crowds . Lantau Island has loads of walking trails with awsome views .There is a watering hole in Mui Wo called The China Bear for a pint waiting on the Ferry back to town . A trip on the cable car up to the Peak and the Star Ferry are all centeral . A walk right down to the very end of temple street market of the evening . There is bars 24 hours in Wanchai .

Macau , well they've got egg tarts and gambling .

  10. Walk out of the wrong way turn left and at the cross roads on the other side on the right there is one. Nothing great, but compedent. I am currently having a load of crowns etc done in Det Udom by a guy who seems to be very good, if you want I can give you his address. Jim

Hi jim the address of the guy in Det Udom would be fantastic as that is where I am! I'll PM as well in case you dont see my reply

    Hi Johnny

Will have to wait till the wife gets home as she has his card, but easy enough to find. It;s on the main road across from the Amphor offices, there is a small place run by a cranky woman Dentist, but if you walk a few 100 meters toward Ubon it's the blue sign with an open waiting area. Guy seems to know his stuff and according to the wife he went to the best Uni in Thailand. Will PM you the address tomorrow. Jim

I had a back tooth pulled out by the guy on the main drag , sort of across the road from the BK bank , on the right heading towards the main junction . The dentist spoke good english . I ended up getting three jabs . Good job .

  11. Memock - the montilla pool is fairly clean (clorinated ) . The food is more expensive than a restaurant outside but they have an english menu . You can order a western breakfast , pork steak and chips , deep fried battered chicken if they have it as a treat or change for the nippers . We usually order a mullet on a fish kettle with the tomato sauce thing , the salads are fine and they do all sorts of squid dishes . There are small bamboo huts to sit in or you can take a table inside . I recomend the place as a family day out if you live in the vicinity . Let me know when you are going next .(the only thing is the not very cold beer at 80 bhat a bottle) .

Jim-I will PM you when up country , Looking forward to a coldy and the idle banter .

Bergen - maybe try to organise a Det Udom get together ?

  12. Hi Luke, does little duck do decent food?

Dantilly - where did you end up staying?

Memock , the food is your usual fare , tom pla , ka na moo and so on , a wee bit salty sometimes. The last time I was there they didn't have margarittas . Not to worry though . Have you tried the bar with all the old bycles hanging on the wall at the end of the main drag , the lass who owns it speaks english .

I will be up country end of march if you fancy a beer and some idle banter of an afternoon ?

    Luke

  13. I was stopped by security at Macau international airport on my way to BK . I was carrying a tin of olives in salt water in my carry-on bag .

The security officer said , no liquids.

    I said, it's a can of olives .

The security officer shook the can and said , no liquids .

I said , ok but can I keep the olives ?

The security said , OK .

I had to open the can a little bit and pour the water into the big bin . I was then allowed through and onto the plane .

It was the same on the way back , I had to throw a jar of homemade pa la sap , in a skippy peanut butter jar , into the big bin . The guy said , good pa la sap .

I should have learned the first time .

Allowed through with the can of olives I might add .

  15. Onion Luke - is that just before the hotel on the corner?

Bergen, the artwork that Phadaeng have errrr ummmm 'hanging' is not really my taste!

Yes , and if you were to turn right at the corner you would be aproaching the big fire station . It is on the ground floor of an old shop house . I remember prints and objects hanging on the walls . I was looking for old vinyl records , unsuccessfully .

MeMock , did you find any thing ?

  17. I have seen a small arts and crafts shop on the road aproaching the train station in Warin , on your right about a few sois after the plastic policeman if you were coming from the market .

    Happy hunting .
