  1. Goto Krungsri(yellow) Thanachart(Orange) or TMB(red white blue). All have "no--fix" saving accounts earning 2.9 - 3.0%. There is no need to lock the money up.

This website shows much lower rates for these banks. Are these rates still available for easy access?

  2. Wow, unknown causes of death in US: 12

    Thailand: 112

Probably many more Australians visit Thailand than USA, so you need to compare percentages not numbers. The most visited country is most likely to have the most deaths. It would be extremely strange if tourists didn't die here. 20 million visit every year, so some are bound to die. We all will die eventually.

Millions of Australians die in Australia, but that doesn't mean it's dangerous and that the whole population should leave.

  3. those bastids are nasty and I've found a few underneath furniture and etc in the downstairs areas....I always kill them with a strong pesticide 'cause if I don't they'll always find their way back into the house and we got small kids around...

You have kids in the house and use strong pesticide? Are you trying to kill your kids as well?

  4. What's the general cost of making a will in Bangkok. I just checked Sunbelt prices and they are more expensive than the UK! Can anyone recommend a good and reasonably priced lawyer?

Also, do you know if making a will in Thailand will override a UK will?

  5. Quote:

After a meeting yesterday, the Education Ministry agreed to conduct a sixpoint campaign at primary schools across the country, while the Culture Ministry, which regulates Internet cafes, will oversee sanitary measures at all outlets.

"Normal adults should probably not contract HFMD, other than those with defective immunity [systems] or whose hygiene is lacking," he said.

That's Thailand in deep s**t then.. how many Thai's can you see running to the nearest shop to buy a clean cloth & disinfectant !!

My local street vendor uses the same "old t-shirt" & bowl of cold water to wipe down all his surfaces & his cooking utensils.. followed by his hands before asking you "what would you like to eat"

hence I stopped eating at his place years ago.. after I had a word with him.. but he still does the same !!

I'm surprised Thailand is as free from epidemics as it is or are Thais just more immune to all things??

Your body's immune system will take care of everything, so doesn't matter if you use a dirty cloth. In the west there allergies are rampant in the populations, apparently because westerners tend to be obsessive about killing all germs. Doing that means your body doesn't build up any immunity. You may be surprised but there is no reason to, as all this is biological fact. But western living has probably made you a little paranoid about germs.

  6. Rent is cheaper and you will have a lot of problem when and if you want to sell the condo

For a Thai citizen who plans to spend the rest of their life here, then buying is cheaper if the person is young. For example, if a 20 year old bought a condo with a 25 year mortgage and live to be 70, then the choice is pay mortgage for 25 years or pay rent for 50 years. Mortgage payments should be pretty level for whole term, while rent is likely to rise considerably.

You are like many other people who have no concept of how to compare rent to mortgage. You seem to be comparing what rent is today vs what mortgage is today, without taking future rent rises into account. If you buy you will also have a property at the end of 25 years and then can live rent free after that.

So explain why you think renting is cheaper? You are totally wrong, unless you're talking about someone that just wants a property of a year or two before moving on.

  7. No such (official, lawful) thing as a notary in Thailand. Some documents can be done at the US Embassy, Consular Section, but limited in scope. Although Thai lawyers have an association of 'notaries', there is no law codifying notarial services in Thailand, and such a service would be worthless for non-Thai purposes.

I believe the Thai word for a notary is, pu rap rong laai sen.

There is one at Asoke BTS station.

In the past I have used bank managers and police stations with no problems for non Thai purposes.

The OP doesnt say what he needs notarizing, if its the usual passport or driving license for banking purposes in the Uk such as opening a new account,I have photocopied my documents, wrote in English the usual drivel, "I certify this is etc etc", then had them signed and stamped up, never had a problem.

I need it for a Croatian document and an Apostille stamp is essential. Even the Croatian Consulate can't do it. I think my plan B is to fly to Croatia.

  8. It would help to know where you are but Suan Phlu in Bangkok can issue on Saturday mornings. Airport can issue during hours of 06-2400 for departing pax.

I'm very near Suan Phlu. Do you know Saturday opening hours? Do they really issue them at the airport? I previously read that it was only for emergencies. I would rather get at the airport, but I don't want to get there and find out that they don't issue them for some reason.

  9. There are several thousand falangs in CM who work from their computers who do not have work permits. This number is dwindling as one by one the Thai authorities are tracking them down and deporting them.

    Good luck.

Indeed? I very doubt it. How do you track it? I watch movies on my computer, I do not work. Impossible to track.

It depends what you're doing. If you're doing work and getting paid into your Thai bank account then they can see the money arriving in your account. If you run an ebay store they can easily track you down via your ISP. I doubt they would do that for people not doing much work because it would be a waste of money.

These laws in all countries are based on pre-internet working. There are people openly blogging that they work in Thailand without a work visa and no-one does anything to them. I don't see why it would be an issue to the Thai authorities. The only think they would lose is the tax, but if they won't give you a work permit for work at home on your own type jobs then you can't pay the tax. It's a bit of a stupid law (in all countries) that doesn't do anything to safeguard local jobs.

To take an example. A USA man lives here and spends $24k a year, thus contributing to the Thai economy. He also had part-time work-at-home job while in the US that earned him $5k a year. So what are his options? He can't get a work permit here, so if he wants to continue his work then he should move back to USA. The Thai economy then loses $24k a year. That is just nonsense.

Thanks for that. I just found that out too, so now I need to come up with a plan B.

  11. It might be worth checking out the price to Vienna or Budapest, then take a 4-5 hours bus or taxi ride. Finnair had excellent deals for these destinations a few weeks ago, 30-35 000.

I tried those two and they are more expensive than Aeroflot and some others. All option seems to go from Bangkok to somewhere in Europe and then on to Split. I'm wondering if there are cheaper flights to Europe from a country near Thailand that I can get to with Air Asia. But I don't see any of those options and don't want spend hours checking flights from all the nearby countries. Just hoping someone flies a similar route and knows how to get cheaper flights.

  12. A businessman would/should be here on a business visa, which would allow him to check emails, etc. If you're here on something like a retirement visa then that is different.

Is it easy to get a work permit if you do bits of work that may only earn you a few thousand $s a year. What do you have to show and prove to get one? Is it easier or more difficult to get than a retirement visa.

  13. I checked using matrix software, also depends on which airport you fly into and dates.

Dubrovnik about 2 changes, Split 2 stops (Thai and Lufthansa 1 Stop)

Can I use matrix software online? Cheapest I've found so far is about $1,000 return using Aeroflot, who I'd rather not use. Next best price is around $1,500. I'm very flexible on dates and don't mind a few flight changes. Need to go September probably for around 2 weeks.

I need to end up in Split.

  14. Return tickets from Bangkok to Croatia are pretty expensive. Does anyone know of a cheaper way? For example, flying from Bangkok to a neighboring country first and then onto Croatia or a nearby country. I know some routes are more popular and will have better pricing, but I have no idea what those routes are.
