  1. Dr. Wanchai is sadly mistaken if he thinks the cherry trees will flourish behind the university. A quick trip up to Doi Chaang would show him that his idea is misguided as all the cherry trees that were planted there years ago are dying because of disease. How is it possible that cherry trees can grow at a 400 m. elevation when they can not survive at colder 800 m. elevation only 50 km away.

  2. After the earthquake I went up and inspected the dam and did not see anything indicating structural damage however if there is a year of extremely heavy rainfall and the dam reaches capacity, it will be frightening because the cracks mentioned in the article are near the very top of the dam.

  3. Poor reporting yet again. There was not a 5.3 earthquake, it was a 6.0. We have had numerous aftershocks, many in the 4.+ range as recently as the week of Aug. 13th, 2014. There have been daily aftershocks in the 2.0 range that can not be felt but are being recorded on the Thai Meteorological website http://www.tmd.go.th/en/earthquake_report.php To say "Chiang Rai is more flood prone" is a gross overstatement considering the size of the province and limited area affected by the earthquake. In truth, there is possibly a potential for flooding in the Mae Suai and Mae Lao regions of Chiang Rai, about 30-40 kms south of Chiang Rai city, the areas that took the brunt of the earthquake. Also, the reservoirs in the Chiang Rai are starting to get filled up but the large dam in Mae Suai was still low (maybe only 45% full) as of the end of July and the reservoir in Mae Kha Chan on the way to Chiang Mai was VERY low (maybe 20% capacity) as of Aug. 8th.

  4. I have been using a TOT fibre optic line for a couple years now in Chiang Rai. Even though the speed is 15MB for in-country hosted websites, I have noticed a significant performance hit over the past year or so on foreign websites and when I asked the local technician about it, he said that TOT has lost their contract for foreign bandwidth and is now using the military's pipeline. As a test, I installed a TRUE sim card in my ipad and noticed it was MUCH faster on foreign websites, not buffering at all, even when loading HD video. True said they have their own contract to get bandwidth from abroad so if I had the option (which unfortunately I don't yet,) I personally would switch to the True Docsis cable.

  5. We had a very wealthy client who wanted to buy about 400 rai of which only 100 rai had chanot. The seller proposed exactly what Teebee mentioned - the seller would borrow money from the buyer using the land as collateral and just not repay it. The client hired one of the best law firms in BKK who heard what the seller proposed and came back with a written document showing that a court case like this had gone to the Supreme Court of Thailand and the ruling was that this method, although widely used around the country, broke the spirit of the law and therefore was not legal meaning that if push came to shove, our client stood to lose everything. Needless to say, he found another piece of land that did have chanot.

  6. This may fix to the VAN Accident on Friday Morning has been between Doi Saket and Mae Kha Chan Hot Spring on the 118 Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai,

    my tourguide wife told me.

Dead also a Tourguid sitting front, and two other people sitting first guest row. (Could be them ... ?)

Did't find another news about this

If you look at their blog twoonfourwheels.com, it looks like they were just entering Thailand from Cambodia so they probably didn't make it to the North yet.

  7. Why just Chiang Mai why not go up a few more miles to Chiang Rai too, whilst I would welcome a faster service, it seems like a certain family are doing the best they can to benefit their own home town.

Chiang Rai is a tiny little town comparing to Chiang Mai.

Ever heard of places developing because they have a railway, last time I looked Chiang Rai doesn't seem to have one. A few more miles into Chiang Rai even at reduced speeds would bring some economic benefits to the people of that town.

If you think about taking the line to Chiang Rai, why not carry it one step further and link it up to southern China . . . especially considering they are the ones funding the thing. Wouldn't it be nice to hop on a train in Singapore/BKK/CM and go all the way to Lhasa?

  8. I don't own one but have worked with numerous clients who have purchased them and from the experience I have learned that the main issue is the clientele. If you have working professionals renting from you, you will have fewer problems. If you get students, be prepared for non-stop headaches. Also, you will need to have a repair person on call or on salary (assuming you don't want to fix clogged toilets on a Sunday morning) so make sure to put that cost into your spreadsheet. Take your time and get good renters, don't just try to fill the building as quickly as possible.

  9. For the last week when I have tried to access rollingstone.com I get an access denied error. Any idea if it it because my IP address is outside the U.S. and rollingstone.com is blocking it or is it Thai gov't censorship? Anyone else with the same problem?

  10. Living in a shoe box obviously has some kind of appeal for there are quite a few foreigners currently living in Condotel. Maybe it really isn't the size that matters . . .

  11. Worldbike is the dealer for SRAM in Thailand. I think they have a shop in CM as well. Try these phone numbers 053-240-106/7/8/9 or 0893027849 or 02-510-1041. If you come to Chiang Rai and want to ride send me a PM. Great trails here with lots of big uphills and down.

  12. I had been having many problems as well (in Chiang Rai) so last week I uninstalled chrome thinking it was the browser but this week I was having the same problem with Firefox - amazon.com wouldn't load. So after calling 1530 and politely asking for a manager I finally got a call from a fairly knowledgeable technician who explained that 3BB just got a lot of new IP addresses and some of them are getting blocked by various sites.

He recommended resetting the router and after doing so I haven't had any problems. So the temporary fix now appears to be unplugging your router and hoping that when restarting you don't manage to get an IP address that is blocked by one of the sites you try to visit. He anticipated the problem would get better with time but for now . . . endure or look for service elsewhere.

TTT Chiang Rai said they will be opening service in about 3 months so if I am still resetting my router on a regular basis, I will change.

  13. If you want a Thai school, look at Sankhong school, one of the Tessaban schools or Anuban Chiang Rai. The only way to get a feel is to walk into each one and talk to the principal. I was impressed with the staff at Anuban Chiang Rai and they are opening an English Program in May for 1st graders.

It looks like the Chiang Rai International School is going to be a very Christian school. Take a look at their mission statement:

http://www.chiangrai-internationalschool.c...out/mission.htm Too bad, Chiang Rai really needs a good international school, not another one that is trying to save souls! :)

    Chiang Rai International School

    C - Creativity and Confidence

    R - Responsibility

    I - Integrity

S - Spiritual Growth and Social Awareness

CRIS strives to educate our students, in a loving and caring Christian environtment, to become globally enlightened citizens, who are able to bridge the gap between the East and the West and are ready to welcome the exciting challenges in our Chiang Rai International School.
