  1. Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai was started in 2000. It is a beautiful campus and appears at first glance to be a great place to work. However, after looking a bit deeper it is easy to see why the turnover rate among foreign teachers is almost 100%. First, there is very little respect for the foreign ajarns, they are seen as a replaceable commodity. There is no feeling of "self improvement" or positive encouragement, it is all stick and no carrot. Teachers who show themselves competent get loaded with more responsibility but without any corresponding thanks. Therefore the teachers that have stayed around the longest tend to be those who do the least.

Summer vacation is 3 months but according to university policy you are supposed to be working. Whether this is enforced or not depends on the coordinator. Currently it is not enforced but teachers are expected to do a 2 week summer course (which is supposed to be paid at an additional 400 baht per hour but as of yet nothing has been paid).

The problems seem to come from above in that the president is a dictator and rumors of corruption abound. Not surprisingly, anything that has kickback potential - be it grandious buildings, high-tech equipment or immaculate landscaping, is well done but it is difficult for teachers to get simple things like tape players or even paper for copies.

There are "teacher evaluations" done to "improve the teachers" but the teachers do not see these evaluations. If they are good, you certainly will never hear a thing as this would add value when you negotiate for a salary but if they are bad, they can be used as grounds for dismissal.

There is no insurance for foreign teachers and they are not allowed to stay in the university housing.

After all the negative, it does seem that things are changing but again, that is because of the coordinator. She is educated in a western university and understands a more democratic work environment. However, she is between a rock and a hard place in that decisions get made from above and she has to follow them, however unattractive they are.

MFL U, has potential but is currently not a first choice in terms of places to work.

  2. Last week I was renewing my O visa and had a long talk with the immigrations officials in Mae Sai. My wife is a doctor and I asked them if that changes the "man supporting wife" scenario. They said that the wife's salary could be included in the application. They also said that if a foreign woman marries a Thai male, she doesn't have to show ANYTHING. It is assumed the man is supporting her. Therefore, it shows the rules are based on archaic thinking but there is leeway.

Finally, regarding the 400 K savings, my wife has a savings account in the hospital cooperative that exceeds 400 K but immigrations says that account can not be used for my 400K requirement because it is in her name. In order to be valid it needs to be in both of our names. Interesting, her salary can be included but the savings in her name can not . . . :o

  3. john b good or john b jaded?

if you are living in thailand with that attitude, you've successfully created your own ######, congratulations!

"Don't ever trust a smiling Thai (and they all smile don't they)

Don't ever get involved in something (an offer) that sounds too good to be true, because it will be (i.e. too good to be true)

Don't ever get too friendly or close to a Thai or Thais as in the majority of cases they are only out to separate you if at all possible from your folding stuff.

The friendliness of Thailand is a myth."

  4. A Chiang Rai basketball team is recruiting for a talented and large player to take the place of our forward who left last month. The yearly tournament begins the 24th of Nov. and ends the 3rd of Dec. For the right player our team will pay for dinner every night you are in Chiang Rai, provide accomodation with a swimming pool, give you 2 uniforms and a provide you a chance to see Chiang Rai and meet some new people and have fun playing basketball. The tournament is only in the evenings so you have lots of time during the day to sightsee.

The tournament is VERY COMPETITIVE so players without lots of experience or under 5'11" need not apply.

If interested, send an email to [email protected]

  5. I appreciate the number of people who have shown concern in this issue, especially the ones that realize factual information has tremendous value and would prefer to know about something rather than remain ignorant. Next I have to ask, what does being a "newbie" have to do with anything? I speak when I have something to say, not in a vain attempt to show how clever I am.

I know about this rape because my wife is a doctor and was at the hospital when the young woman came in. The woman went to the hospital because of rips in her vagina. She was worried about internal injuries and had to subject herself to all kinds of unpleasant tests. The doctor who was on duty, Dr. Pitsanuk. If you would like to get his opinion, call the Chiang Rai public hospital.

I do not allow the police or the Thai legal system to dictate what justice is. About a month ago, a friend, Brad Talley, was killed by his wife. There is more than enough evidence to convict her in most countries but what I have seen of the Chiang Rai police, a group of boy scouts would make better detectives. That is why the police opinion means next to nothing to me and I spent no time calling them. If their opinion matters to you, why don't YOU give them a call?

Ask yourself, what do I have to gain in reporting this? I don't know the woman and I don't operate a rival guesthouse. I just dislike corruption of all kinds and I hope that I can find some like-minded individuals who know that they can make a positive contribution to society by exposing corruption and injustice wherever it rears its ugly head.

  6. Two nights ago, a 26 year old Australian woman was drinking with the staff of Lek House, the guest house she was staying at in Chiang Rai. She awoke in the morning and realized she had been raped, most likely by more than one person and had been drugged. She reported it to the police but it has not made the news (not surprisingly.) I only know this because I know the doctor that examined her. Tell friends and tourists to stay away from Lek House when visiting Chiang Rai.

  7. i am an american living in chiang rai. i have recently been offered a teaching position by a local university. i see from other postings that a teacher needs to make 60,000 b a month. i have been offered 25,000. will this be a problem?
