  2. The Thai education system is a joke.

Around a year or so ago, Thai teachers were made to sit the very exam that they were teaching their pupils to pass. Over 80% of them failed.

Asking questions is not encouraged. By asking a question, the pupil loses face as it is admittance of not knowing the answer.

Asking questions is not encouraged because the teacher may lose face if they don't know the answer.

Everybody gets a pass. Nobody fails as that would infer that either the pupil or the teacher is at fault and someone loses face.

Subjects are learnt by rote. They are taught the answer, but, not why it is the correct answer.

    Critical thinking? Forget it.

Being bright is the raw material. A proper education hones that brightness.

Yes, there are bad schools in the UK, but far fewer than in Thailand.

As I've said before, if you abandon your children to the mess that is the Thai education system, just so that you can stay in Thailand, then that is selfishness. It is the parents duty to give their child the best possible education that they can; even if that means moving back to their home countries.

I have had to say goodbye to many of my friends over the years here in Phuket, because they went back for their child's education. They recognized this need and also their responsibility.

You can bang on and make up scenarios where the child is happier in Thailand and how friends have made a success without a degree, but, it changes nothing. Sounds more like you are trying to justify your selfishness.

Oi thai basher! m not trying to justify anything cos i dont even live in Thailand yet,i have a home and a roofing business in England and im going back home next week.im just trying to figure out which would be more beneficial for my wife, future child and myself in the future.

You keep knocking thai education but you want to have a look at schools in leeds/bradford area where i live and have my business, have you ever even been up in the north of England? The kids are out of control,no respect for teachers and the teachers hands are tied. You have to scrap to get your kid into a good school and i knows this cos i have already tried and failed cos i was half a mile out of the boundry.

Its not all about education either, why should the guys with kids go back to the uk for instance, maybe they have sold up and bought something over here or even invested in more property which is a good investment and will be PASSED DOWN to their flai kids. Also they are living an easy life with less stress and able to spend much more time with their kids and concentrate on their future, instead of being bogged down in the uk,working stressful hours, taxed up to their eyeballs on everything and at the end of the day you dont even see your kid cos there in bed.

You gotta look at the bigger picture

    BRAVO

  3. There are no guarantees that your child will be an economic success, even with a western education.

But, the bottom line is that a western education is far, far better than a Thai education.

Anyone that is the parent of a 50% / 50% child that doesn't give them that opportunity at whatever cost to themselves shouldn't have had children in the first place.

So if your homeland is the uk for eg, you have flai child and you have a good happy family life you should drop everything and rush back to the uk that is going downhill to HOPEFULLY get your child into a school that may be better than the one in Thailand and if you dont do all this you are a bad parent.Did you say if you had children or not?

It's a little bit harsh, and of course many other factors should be considered and each situation dealt with on its own merits.

All other things being equal - If a suitable school (i.e. international school) cannot be afforded it might be advantageous to school the child outside of Thailand (i.e. in this case the fathers home land).

As already mentioned, while a good education doesn’t guarantee success, the odds of success are stacked firmly against a child with a poor education. Many are saying that a lot of the government schools are not up to scratch.

Again, as already mentioned by another poster, Family atmosphere also plays an important roll, as does a local family support and that of friends. Location also plays a roll, some areas of the UK are frightening and Thailand might be the only viable option…many many factors should be considered and each situation is individual.

But, perhaps the greatest single factor is: Can a good education be afforded to your child in Thailand?.

i have just said in an earlier post i dont see any differance between my daughter and my thai sister in law both 14 and my daughter isnt stupid and is well above average at school.I think i will be checking out a good goverment school for my future son/daughter,i dont think i will be paying out 20,000bt a month seems like another thai scam to me.

Why dont i just put my kid into goverment school and put 20,000 in an account for him every month, then at the end of each year invest the money in land or save up and buy some property.

People keep talking about a good education, the best education comes from the parents in my opinion, teaching them the right from wrong,to be polite, friendly and be wise.I left school with no qualifications,i only started learning maths when i left school and got a job as a roofer.Even albert einstien wasnt anything special at maths during his school days.

When i left school i worked with my dad as a brickies labourer, when a friend of mine left he had all the qualifications and went into uni.i now have a roofing business and guess what he works for me as a labourer. He got all the qualifications and wanted to be a graphic designer but everyone else did aswell at the time so there wasnt enough jobs to go round.

Alot of friends and people i know have very successful businesses and didnt even pass an exam at school,my wife went to uni has a degree and never used it,same with my ex girlfriend.

Im not a big lover of qualifications and degrees people waste years of there young life studying for something and when they get it they dont want it.So you can stick quality western schools and international schools up your ar#e.

Having done some volunteer teaching in a Thai government school I would strongly agree with this. I recommend that the OP does not raise a child in Thailand unless he can afford international school fees.

Ok, do some volunteer work at my old grammer school in the north of england first and see if you strongly agree i should go back to england.

One observation i have made this week,my sister in law is 14 the same age as my daughter. My daughters second language is german,my sisters in laws second language is english. My sister in law is way ahead of my daughter in reading, writing and speaking and she is from nampong(isaan) which is supposed to be the poorest area in thailand. Her computer skills are like my daughters, her typing is probably faster.

My daughter is above average at school but my thai sister in law is no differant if anything she is brighter than my daughter but i keep hearing isaan girls are stupid and thai schools are useless.

  5. MY mother in law wants me and the wife to have a baby and alot of other people do too, including people we meet and dont even know.I must admit the kids i have seen are cute so i can understand why people say this.I even remember a thai lady saying i would like a falang baby but not a falang b/f,which suprised me cos i thought she were very nationalistic..Also i see quite alot of adult thai/falang on television as actors, singers or models.

Seems to me the thai/falang kids are probably well liked but is this true? and is there any jealousy from other kids?

Also,do we have a name for them? I call them flai(pronounced fly) cos im too lazy to say falang/thai.

Indeed, half-farang kids are cute (as are all kids) but as other posters have mentioned, there are far more important factors which should influence your decision to have another child. Do you have the motivation, energy, financial security, stable relationship and time to nurture a new human through the first 20 years of his/her life? Also, have you mentioned your plan to the wife?

Not influenced,i always wanted 2 children and i do have the motivation, finances, relationship not sure about the energy part if he's a boy i may have to start being the fulltime goalkeeper when he gets to about 10.Its not if its when its going to happen but i started the thread also because im quietly concerned how my kid would be treated here.

I have a jamaican/english friend we went through school together in the 80's and i remember it was tough for him but there were alot of rascism back then,i dont think thailand is like england was but its always good to ask thoughs who have been there or are there.

  7. I am tutoring a ten year old Thai boy, whose very wealthy family is planning to send him to the UK to go to boarding school next year.

Poor kid obviously doesn't want to go, is scared to death being so far away from his family, but doesn't dare speak his mind.

Formal education isn't worth squat compared to the emotional/psychological support of family.

No, he may not want to go, but, in twenty years time when he looks back, he'll thank his lucky stars that he got a good western education. A goal that's worth some temporary misery.

You never know......once he's been there a while and made new friends, he might like it.

do you have children karen? Yes the schools maybe better in the west but what gaurantees have you got of getting them into a good school,my english daughter couldnt get into a good school because of the area we lived now she goes to the school i went to which is right next to a rough council estate and where the teachers are still <deleted> after all these years.

Another point is the west is mess right now and everything is so expensive and maybe they have a good life in Thailand and everyone is happy then you move to lets say the uk,you have less money, its cold, your thai wife hates it there. So you and the wife are arguing everynight, neither of you want to be there but your son might be getting a better education. But is he happy? seeing his mum and dad arguing all the time, his mother crying saying she wants to go back to Thailand.

What effect does all this have on there son? My guess is they would be alot happier in thailand and as long as their son is accepted by the other thai kids they will have a happy family life.

Canuckamuck made a good point, what about some teaching at home too,you learn something, your son learns something and he will appreciate it when he is older.

  8. Look Krueng kids are treated very well.

Mind, it's not always 100% obvious from appearances that a kid is half Farang. To me the biggest clue is if mummy looks like a typical 'mia Farang' ex pro, in combination with the appearances of the kid.

But put the same kid with a normal looking Thai person and you may not notice as easily.

the flai kids stick out like a sore thumb to me i dont need to look at the mother, actually i have been in hua hin this year and none of mothers look like pro's.The kids with the brown hair stick out, maybe if the kids got black hair its harder to tell but you can still see with the eyes.

  9. Sounds like a troll to me....

Why would you have a baby to please your m-i-l?

no troll and i dont want a kid to impress the m-i-l,i were just pointing out that thai people seem to like the flai kid or thats the impression get.I do want a kid and thats partly the reason why i posted, just wanted to know how the kids are treated i will have a child regardless of what people think because i always wanted another child even before i met my wife.

  11. Your responsibility to check the permision to stay stamp.

    You are now on overstay.

Hopefully you will be able to sort it out tomorrow without being fined.

    I hope so.

    Be polite and act dumb.smile.png

You were right lite beer, sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say you were wrong.Basically i thought you were just to put the frighteners on me but i was wrong.I forgot i was in thailand for a while then, anyway i went to the immigration office in Hua Hin with my wife she had a word with one of the officers outside showed the passport, explained the situation she said it would be ok but at the time we didnt have the departure card with the passport the officer said if you cant find it you have to go to the police station to get something similar and come back OR (whispering) i can sort this out for 500bht,we found it and it wasnt a problem but it felt like we were down walking st in pataya all of a sudden.

Anyway we gets in there and the lady officer says your on overstay you have to pay 20,000 baht or go back to nong khai and get them to stamp it correctly OR i can do it for you now under the table for 3000bt,the wife was doing the negotiating and got her down to 2000bt.I didnt get involved i just paid the 2000bt plus the 1900bt visa fee and she corrected the mistake and stamped me until the 16th of april and off i trundled.

    lesson learned

  12. I think bob russel just about covered things,i got the visitor visa the 2nd time.basically the 1st time we were badly advised by a friend of hers said she would need quite a bit of money in her account so she debited her account with 2000 pound which wasnt neccasary because i was funding her trip anyway also she didnt give enough reason for her returning back to thailand.

The second time we went into alot more detail about the relationship, got a letter from her employers to say she was coming back and explained why someone had put the money in her account.I dont think emails and phone calls would be that important if you are living together but my advice would be if you are really want her to get the visa then start taking pics together in differant places if you can,if you are near her family take some pics of you all together and get her to get a letter from her employers saying she has permission to travel and is coming back,go into as much detail as you can about the relationship, show the visa officer you mean business.

My g/f didnt have a house and hadnt been to the us before so your g/f has extra things that have got to work in her favour but is the house good enough reason for her to return,in their eyes i dont know but i would say if you can get a letter from her employers saying she is coming back you wont have a problem.

Also tell your g/f to go on ladyinter if shes not already on it, the girls seem to stick together more on there and give some good advice rather than laughing at each other.

no way im on overstay,i paid 100 quid for 4 months,i went out within the 2 months and im within the second 2 months now,yes i should have checked the stamp to save the hassle but what is the point of the officials at the border flipping through the pages of my passport and looking at my visa,is this just for show? Where does it state that it is your responsibility to check the stamp and if you dont check it you will be charged 500 baht a day overstay if the officials make a mistake.I dont think so.

  14. What visa did you obtain in the UK? A single tourist visa or a two entry tourist visa? Unless it was two entry you only have one stay of 60 days that can be extended 30 days at immigration. And unless you stayed outside of Thailand for a few days that 17 January date does not equate to 60 days from November 14. What is issue date of of visa? What is expiration date of visa? How many entry is the visa?

sorry dont think i made it clear,i came in with a two entry tourist visa

came from uk 17th of november

went into lao 14 of january

    returned 17th of january

if its worked out at 60 days (per 2 month) i believe i have until the 16th of march, the issue date of the visa is 14th of november, the visa has to be utilised by the 16th of may and the visa is a two 2 month visa.someone else replied saying it is my duty to make sure they stamp it correctly,is this true,i dont think so personally because they dont even speak english and i would say it is their job to look for these things.maybe im wrong but we will find out when i go to the immigration office tomorrow.

once again thankyou very much for the advice

  15. thanks lopburi, just one thing with that.i came back into thailand for my second 60 days on the 17th of jan but the thai immigration at nong khai stamped my 'admitted until' at 31 january.i dont think this should be a problem because obviously i have my two 2 month visa stamped as proof but im just wondering for future relevance wheather the immigration should have stamped me for another 60 days this giving me until the 16th of march.

  16. Was wondering if I can get another 30 days after a two 2 month visa.I got the visa from the uk and was stamped on 14 of November,I have been out of Thailand to get my other 2 month.I believe my visa will expire on the 13th of march but I have changed my flight to the 2nd of April.

I will need another month but how do I get this? Can I get another month at the immigration in hua hin or do I have to go out of the country by boat?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

  17. Thai/Chinese Phuket, her parents from Phuket to..

Were do you guys find your issan ladies? in bars or what. dont not understand how you can live with girls from Issan, most girls from issan have no education and zero money, then you most send money home to the village each month haha

    what a wanke_r!

Have you ever even lived in Issan territory? No education!?! My wife's from Khon Kaen,a university graduate and speaks 3 languages. What languages do you speak? Actually dont answer that,i can see your still having trouble with ENGLISH.

  18. My mother tongue is Dutch, but i do speak German, English, Thai (not enough), some French. I always thought many English were lazy learning other languages. But there are a fair amount of expats that speak good Thai who are English and i don't. So i adjusted that opinion.

i think the dutch speak very good english but why do most speak with a lisp? i remember psv coming to leeds utd and beating us 1-4 and at the end the psv fans were singing " always look on the bright side of life".There were about 2000 psv fans all singing a comedy english song,in english, all together in our stadium.they were taking the piss but it was funny and rather embarrasing at the same time.

  19. went up to udon thani last year for 1 night on my way to non khai, was offered cocaine within half an hour of going out by an addict dealer,is thai polotics some kind of joke? this is a massive statement to come out and say! has this guy worked with drugs before and solved any problems?

In the uk we have much more resources to fight drugs and re abilitate drug addicts but the chief of police says we are losing the battle against drugs.

what is chalerm going to do kill all the addicts and dealers? but then you have still got all the boys and girls who just like a few yabaa tablets and a bag of grass at the end of the working week.

I know a thai guy who died last year at 35 because of whiskey abuse but everyone drinks whiskey so its not a problem, cigarettes are hidden in the 7/11 but whiskey is on show.so lets concentrate on drugs and forget about whiskey because that obviously brings far too much revenue to be messing around with.

  20. What a shock!!! Abu qatada the radical muslim cleric has just been released on bail,he faces charges in his OWN COUTRY (jordan),he poses one the biggest dangers to the western world but yet he has been released because the european court of human rights says he may not get a fair trial in his own country.

So if we cant deport a jordanian terrorist(which we have been trying to do since 2001) who poses a high risk to uk security, there is no chance of deporting a british kick boxer who killed someone in a fight.

One thing always puzzles me,how do they get a lawyer to represent them? do they have no morals!

  21. How stuffed up is the British "justice" system.

They're doing all they can to prevent this viscious, murdering (alleged), thug from being extradited to face up to the consequences of his crimes. Justice for the victim apparently not a consideration.

The same system that refuses to deport a convicted terrorist back to his own country, even though he has no right of residence in the UK, because they don't like how the evidence against him was found.

The same justice system that has kept an online blogger (who embarrassed several governments by publishing truthful documents) in custody for years on trumped up rape charges for which no evidence has ever been presented to the appeal courts!

No wonder seemingly half the population of Britain has moved to Thailand!

You are right it is a mess but it is a mess because the law is controlled by europe not britain, all this human rights bullshit stems from "the hague".

Also the muslim cleric you are talking about has been imprisoned now for about 9 year but its europe that are blocking the extradition, the british goverment had to appeal against the last <snip> up just to keep him locked up.Europe says he cannot be extradited because he may be killed in Jordan which breaches his human rights. This is one of the most dangerous men to threaten the western world but europe are prepared to let him walk free in the uk.its a disgrace, same with this boxer,if its proved he went looking for and murdered this guy he should face the music in Thailand.

I think you are partly right this is one of the reasons we are leaving the uk and thailand seems to be a favourite destination along with aus and the us,people feel like they are the minority we pay huge taxes for everything but seem to be the ones with the least rights.
