  1. I had my shots in The Netherlands, the last one 3 months ago and no side effects at all.

Not even a sore arm, perhaps it is the way the para-medic is administering the shot and the size of the needle. I do take a daily dose of blood thinner, (aspirin) because of a stent placed 8 years ago in Thailand after a heart attack.

  2. The CDC finally admits it was Vitamine E acetate in all samples found: Source.

They knew this already 2 months ago but refused to publish it in favor of Big Tobacco and Big Pharma.

They contributed to the big scare to try to ban vaping all together, The sick and dead where just collateral damage.

And there is this, the MSA, Master Settlement Agreement. The states received BIG money from the tobacco industry as compensation for smoking related illnesses and deaths. The states sold bonds for that money, even invested in the tobacco industry with that money.

It is all a very dirty game and money is the only motivator.

  3. Just booked a flight from the Netherlands to Thailand and made the payment.

Now I realize I made a miscalculation that results in 1 day overstay, 31 days instead of 30 days. I cannot change the dates without making €150 costs.

How to prevent problems, report at arrival that I am going to have a 1 day overstay, or just pay the fee at departure?

You should be much more careful now as a second infection is considered to be much more severe.

Only if you are infected by a different strand. By my knowledge there are 4 strands of dengue virus. you have immunity from the strand you had before, but if you are infected by a different strand your immune system goes haywire.

  5. All the ice cubes here in Korat are produced by 2 or 3 big ice producing factories, see their cars driving around all day, this is safe ice to use.

Tap water here I only use to shower and brush my teeth, sometimes I open the tap and smell rotten eggs, this water is pumped up from the earth, naam badaan.

I buy my drinking water in large bottles that sit on top of a water cooler.

For two months ago I bought the big white non transparent bottles at the local store they are cheap 19 ltr. for 19 baht.

But now I only buy the more expensive transparent bottles, 30 baht. The reason for this is two months ago I tripped, dropped the bottle and it broke.

Now I was able to look inside the bottle, algae inside all over. don't know what the algae can do to you, but it clearly shows they do not clean the bottles inside before refilling.

  6. I live on a large property in Isaan, adjacent to a forest and river and the tick infestation in the past 6 months has been unreal. To spray the grounds would be futile as the forest also comes into play. Small black ones and then a much larger grey coloured type. I have been taking my dog to a local vet, who injects him but other than my dog hating him and wanting to bite his head off, it has not reduced the number of ticks.

My wife spends many hours each week, by hand, sometimes a couple of hundred at a time. Since the rain commenced they are even more prolific. The dog shows no sign of discomfort and has little, if any fleas but these bloody ticks, so many. Once removed they are squashed between tissue paper and I can see that they are all full of blood. I see some only get a few ticks, god I wish this was the case with my fella.

I've also tried a product sold by the pet shops, (B150) don't know the name and put it on the skin between the shoulders and also front line, which is very expensive at B2500 for 3 months but neither have worked. I wash him weekly with a tick and flea wash and also use a tick and flea powder but nothing seems to work. I am really at my wits end as I believe these things can give a dog a blood disease which can make them ill and even require blood transfusion

He's a 1 year old pedigree German Shepherd and being part of our family I have no problem in spending money in protecting him but I just can't find anything that works. I don't want him to be injected any more, as on every occasion, he reacts adversely to it, only through pain for a short period of time. I can see why he doesn't take to kindly to the vet. I will read every post and hope that someone has found a product that works, or at the very least, reduce these blighters significantly.

Don't squash them, specially the mature grey big ones, these are the female ticks and are full of eggs, once they are released the eggs can hatch. It is better to buy a small bottle of Bayticol and make a recommended solution, this is the same what they call sheep dip. When taking the ticks out by hand put some of the solution in a glass or cut of plastic bottle and dispose of the ticks in this solution. When you don't have this at hand, stick the ticks on a piece of sellotape, when you collected some of them fold the tape double to seal them, this is also a great way if you see ticks walking on the wall or floor.

Like I posted before and also others, buy Ex-Dex 4000. 10 tablet for 70-90 baht, the best and cheapest way.

  7. I would indeed go for the Ex-Dex 4000. I had a serious tick infestation, the dogs were full of them at one time it was so bad that I spent 3 hours per day to manually remove the ticks from my two dogs, every day. When in the morning I looked at the wall close to were my dogs are sleeping it was full of them hundreds, marching upwards. I made me crazy, I tried the collars, did not work, anti flee and tick shampoo, did not work. Then finally I found Ex-Dex 4000. The first month I gave the dogs a weekly doses. Now monthly. I still see some ticks now and then that are half dead, but never fully grown female ticks that lay eggs. It also helps to spray the dogs with Bayticol, this you can also use to keep the dogs sleeping place tick free.

The injections given at the vet is also Ivermectin, it is also used for dogs that have Demodex (Mange), there are certain races that are allergic to it like Border Collies.

OK, I will take your word for the 300 baht rooms. All I can go on is that I have looked for, and stayed in, lots of different places in CM (I taught in Samoeng and commuted each weekend) and have never run into a 300 baht room.

As for the guys who applaud the police checkpoints: no one in their right minds is in favour of drunk driving, so you are not exclusively enlightened in that regard. But there are many reasons, aside from being drunk, to want to avoid the police: not having your passport, expired license, no license, registration issues, etc. Last month I was stopped twice in one week, albeit on my motorbike. Each time the cops found me at fault for something (no passport, registration 1 month expired) and each time it took a 400 baht "donation" to settle the matter. The police can always find something to ding you for.

Mr K has never paid or been asked for anything. He's been pulled over many times for a check, he's had 2 tickets (both of which he deserved, he was in the wrong) which were issued without any mention of making what is after all an illegal bribe. He carries a copy of his passport and green book under his seat and his driver licence in his pocket and wouldn't pay an illegal bribe if he was asked.

If you're not doing anything wrong and are polite, they aren't going to do anything. This is from almost 5 years riding his bike around town several times a week. I don't know anyone personally who has made such a payment.

Believe me I was happy to bribe my way out. You don't want an conviction for DUI as a Farang here In Thailand. See my earlier post.

  9. Let me begin by stating that in no way, I condone drunk driving and there is no excuse for what happened to me.

I haven't been to a bar in about 8 years, stopped the serious drinking 10 years ago.

Last Friday I was invited by friends to have a drink in downtown Korat. Drove downtown on the motorbike about 18 km from my house.

I had a nice evening had some good conversations with other foreigners and the Chang was tasting good.

When I stepped on the motorbike at the end of the evening to go home, a tuktuk driver warned me that the police was checking down the road for alcohol and where arresting people.

I asked him about an inside route and he told me no police there, so I took the inside route. This all went well and I praised myself lucky that I had no encounter downtown.

Well my luck was about to change, about 3 km from my home there was a police check point and I was stopped and had to do the breath test, the reading showed 0.64.

They explained me that the norm was 0.50 and they would take me to the police station and stay locked up until Monday to appear in court and that the fine would at least be 5200 thb with a reading of 0.64 maybe even higher, but this was up to the judge. I was treated very politely and I responded politely and they complimented me on my ability to speak Thai which I do. They took my foreign driver license and my keys of the motorbike.

I then overheard them talking to each other that they kind of pitied me (Farang songsaan). They then offered me a way out by asking me if I wanted to "help the police".

I asked them how much and they told me 4000 thb. I agreed and told them I had to go to the ATM to get the money. One of the police officers told me to come with him in his private car and we drove to the nearest ATM. After taking out the money I handed over 4000 thb and he gave me my keys and driver license back. Back at the check point I was told to go home and drive carefully.

At home I checked the internet what the fines are for drunk driving and their story was confirmed 100%. They lock you up at the police station until you can appear in court, in my case from Friday night until Monday morning. The fines start at 5000 thb until 20.000 thb, confiscation of your driver license and a conviction and possible community service.

I consider myself very lucky I got of the hook, I was wrong, no doubt about that. Apart from losing the money I feel good about the fact that for once I see the police doing their job. A lesson well learned, this won't happen to me again.
