STAT Vaccination reduces risk of long Covid, even when people are infected, U.K. study indicates By Andrew Joseph Sept. 1, 2021 People who are fully vaccinated [with quality vaccines] against Covid-19 appear to have a much lower likelihood of developing long Covid than unvaccinated people even when they contract the coronavirus, a study published Wednesday indicated. ... “We found that the odds of having symptoms for 28 days or more after post-vaccination infection were approximately halved by having two vaccine doses,” researchers wrote in the study, published in the journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases. “This result suggests that the risk of long Covid is reduced in individuals who have received double vaccination, when additionally considering the already documented reduced risk of infection overall.”... https://www.statnews.com/2021/09/01/vaccination-reduces-risk-long-covid-even-when-people-are-infected-study/

Thailand reports 14,802 new COVID-19 cases and 18,996 recoveries

That could explain the incredibly low official case numbers up in places like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. -
It's going to be interesting to see the reactions by about mid-October of all the superficially brave blowhards here demanding that we "open up NOW!" As they see people all around them (even children) falling ill and gasping for breath as they literally suffocate to death -- and there are no hospital beds to be found -- the formerly brave among us may decide: "I should have been careful what I wished for." Oops -- too late!

CNN Covid-19 hospitalization risk doubles with Delta variant, UK study suggests By Jacqueline Howard, CNN Updated 2232 GMT (0632 HKT) August 27, 2021 (CNN) A new study adds to growing evidence suggesting that the Delta coronavirus variant is not only highly transmissible, but also more dangerous. Covid-19 patients infected with the Delta variant had about double the risk of hospitalization compared to those infected with the Alpha variant, according to the study published Friday in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases. "The results suggest that patients with the Delta variant had more than two times the risk of hospital admission compared with patients with the Alpha variant," researchers from Public Health England and the University of Cambridge wrote in their new study... https://edition.cnn.com/2021/08/27/health/delta-covid-19-hospital-risk-study-wellness/index.html -
Important information for those who say “it’s just the flu” and “we should open back up and let it rip” CIDRAP -- Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy COVID-19 patients at higher risk of blood clots after surgery, study shows By Mary Van Beusekom | News Writer | CIDRAP News | Aug 25, 2021 Venous thromboembolism (VTE), a dangerous complication of surgery, is 50% more likely to occur in current COVID-19 patients and nearly twice as likely in those with recent infection, according to an international study yesterday in Anaesthesia. The researchers also found that this type of blood clot, the top cause of preventable death in hospitalized patients, poses a fivefold increased risk of death in the first 30 days after surgery relative to patients without VTE (pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis)... https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2021/08/covid-19-patients-higher-risk-blood-clots-after-surgery-study-shows

I don't get why Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai have been so astonishingly successful at preventing any serious outbreak. I mean this is Delta we're talking about, right?

Sounds like there’s a split between Prayut and Anutin, on the one hand, and the medical professionals who actually understand public health, on the other. Prayut and Anutin sound wilfully delusional.

The Thai government now planning to loosen restrictions is yet another utter disaster waiting to happen. Childish pipe dream to think that restrictions can safely be loosened at this point. Delusional. Declaring victory w-a-y too soon. In fact, here's what Johns Hopkins University says about what a country should do when it has a high test positivity rate (and Thailand right now has an *extremely* high test positivity rate): "A high percent positive means that more testing should probably be done — and it suggests that it is not a good time to relax restrictions aimed at reducing coronavirus transmission. Because a high percentage of positive tests suggests high coronavirus infection rates (due to high transmission in the community), a high percent positive can indicate it may be a good time to add restrictions to slow the spread of disease." https://publichealth.jhu.edu/2020/covid-19-testing-understanding-the-percent-positive Prediction: New lockdown to quell raging outbreaks will be firmly in place by 15 October. Prayut and Anutin will have to walk away with their tails between their legs.
