  1. Oh god, what idiots.

Let's see, first off, the most powerful country in world will let anyone buy land in their country...have forever...and still the most powerful country in the world...

    Next, this:

Mr Sriracha said foreigners had already acquired about one-third of all Thai land, about one billion rai.

Okay, let's set aside the fact that he sites no authority/evidence for such a ridiculous assertion. Then lets consider WHO actually OWNS Thailand...the 10% of wealthy Thais...the top 1% mostly, owning 90% of ALL Thailand.

These monkeys believe you will think like that if they tell you something you will believe because they are "officials"...like, unfortunately, most Thais do :(

  2. This is an area in sever need of regulation in Thailand. Most of the so called "estate agents" here are simply english speakers who want to live here and or think they will get rich here...that used to happen by the way!!! And even the very very few here who have any real understanding of the industry as a "professional" take advantage of the fact there is no regulation of them here. I challenge anyone to name a truly knowledgeable and ethical estate agent here on Phuket...hell in Thailand for that matter. I am not a big fan of regulation nor do I think that will make the current "estate agents" here "ethical" or even knowledgagle... but that said, this area of business needs regulation, it is deperately needed ..in the short AND especially the long run much more than the timeshare touts, but no one seems to see that.

  3. Last sentence says all, nothing will change to the better...been in Phuket for 15 years and watched the greed...Thailand does in fact have laws for buildings and how far they have to be from the water...;-) But as with a lot of other things then the problem seem to be the will to enforce the laws and this is of course is quite often the result of corruption or just relations with important people..;-)

Much the same as many other countries around the world, some might say every country. It's just more open in some countries.

I am sorry but what is your point? "Thailand is not really any more corrupt than the rest of the world"?:whistling:

  4. I just bought both papers. I'm not one to look for errors but I couldn't help noticing these two headlines from the SE:

"Amateur theft breaks into China's Forbidden City"

    "Skype's humble Esonia beginnings"

u see this is what we are paying for i love that shit. u wouyld not find that in any uk paper.

if u want to hear about murders and muggins then u should buy a police scanner back home. proper interesting. listen to known people getting a tuck. B)

by the way i mean in the uk not in Thailand

no offense Big C but by your posts....do YOU work for the SE, i mean as maybe the editor??:whistling:

anyway, I think the SE is the better paper.

  5. According to a the "international law office" of Phuket, you should probably use a law firm like theirs to open a bank account here. I don't think I can post the link to their article in the Phuket Gazette that explains why or their website here but you should be able to find them easily by googling them! good luck!

Why on earth would you need to pay an expensive law firm to open a bank account ... :bah:

This is just nonsense for a private individual.

I agree with you its a simple thing to do yourself,

Although the bloke we bought the house from used a law firm for everything,

I reckon he must have been there favourite client :D

sorry guys, i had no idea how expensive international law office or that there is no need to use a lawyer to open an account. i was only going on what international law office wrote in the phuket gazzete and that sam fuman, their ceo, told me about that. but do you really think no one should use any lawyer for buying a house?

  9. Three years ago when I sold some land here I had very good farang solicitor take care of the legals for me. Apparently he is no longer on Samui. The lawyer on that was representing the buyer seemed quite alright as well, but he to seems to have moved on. I now need to sell my villa and move on myself. Is there any decent solicitor here that can handle the this for me left here on Samui or does one need to go to Bangkok these days for that? Thanks in advance for any help you can give :)

  10. :)

You don't know a poster named Phukettownnotcity do you?

He also had a beef with the Gazette and used to post in a similar way to yourself. You could perhaps form a coalition with him to persue your common interests. ;)

no idea what you are talking about, maybe you dont either?

how exactly is it a "beef" if I freely express my wholehearted dissatisfaction with the Phuket Gazette as newspaper?

so what is you point?...exactly? I mean, regarding the Bus Driver who crashed on the Patong hill last week. Even the likes of Khun Woody who is clearly beholding to and in the camp of the Gazette with all his sandwich shoppes,e tc and therefore not really fair judge, even he seemed intelligent enough to realize that competition is good for the consumers...ESPECIALLY where the press is concerned. And yet, he, Khun Woody, threw down the gauntlet...in other words, he thought it would be interesting to see which of the papers ended up getting that story correct, the NEWSpaper he has decided that only can be carried in his sandwich shoppes i.e. the Phuket Gazette OR the newspaper that, in the end, that actually got that story correct, the Phuket News. this is the stuff that matters, at least to me. so, what is your poing?:jap:

  11. Just to clear up things for members here, Phuketlen, are you associated with the Phuket News?

It appears you are, but you just referred to them as "they".

If you are part of the organisation, it might be better to answer the spam queries rather than try and make brownie points about another publication.

    If not I apologise.

Apology accepted. I am in fact NOT a part of the Phuket News organization.

True, I do not have any great love for the Phuket Gazette, but have always read because I "had to"...like everyone else because there was no alternative. So I am more than anyhing, simply quite happy to finally have another and so far better alternative in the market to turn to.

  12. ya but at least they report the news accurately...unlike the Phuket Gazette that does not report accurately e.g. the where abouts of the bus driver who crashed the bus on Patong Hill a few weeks ago.

This was clarified by the Gazette ...

In the confusion immediately after the accident, the Gazette was told that the driver was not injured and was at Patong Police Station for questioning.

However, the Gazette has since been told that the driver was slightly injured and last seen at Patong Hospital.

    Full story .... http://phuketgazette...ch=yes&Id=10058

yes thank you for confirming that the Phuket Gazette did NOT report it correctly in the first place. they "were told"...excellent journalism. whereas the Phuket News got it right the first time.

  13. How did they get your mail in the first place, did you give it to them? :)

Yes, I'm wondering how they got hold of my personal email address :annoyed: I was receiving far too many news alerts every day that I had to go to the effort to unsubcribe to a service I never subcribed to in the first place.

Yes, I even got a text message. How the fxxx did they get my mobile number. I hate spamming businesses....:annoyed::annoyed:

seconded. hate spamming businesses, and would not consider buying their paper, and why would I since I recieve a bunch of "news" emails from them every day anyway.:annoyed:

    rant over :)

ya but at least they report the news accurately...unlike the Phuket Gazette that does not report accurately e.g. the where abouts of the bus driver who crashed the bus on Patong Hill a few weeks ago.

  14. At this moment we have a very interesting divergence of published opinion which, in my opinion, will speak volumes about the quality of reporting in Phuket.

The Phuket Gazette reported on the overturned bus this morning, on Patong Hill. It describes the circumstances surrounding the turnover, and says that the driver is in the police station.

A, let's say another publication says that the driver fled and the police are currently looking for him.

The new newspaper says that driver's whereabouts are "unknown."

It'll be interesting to see which paper got the right story. :)

Well there you go, as I understand, the police at still hunting this bus driver. So, in the "accuracy in fact finding and reporting on breaking news stories contest" we have:

    THE PHUKET NEWS: 1

    PHUKET GAZETTE: 0

  15. I'd love to study Thai law. Anyone got any ideas where?

    Joke shop, Phuket Town?

THANK YOU!!:jap: EXACTLY the kind of answer that illustrates the irrelevant incompetency of pretty much ANY answer to a legal question regarding Thai law you get on TV. nuff said.

  16. That would assume that no one on TV has neither a legal background nor work with contracts, of course.

Could also be that Contract Law and the Law of Torts (which doesn't appear appropriate here) are different in Thailand. That's why you need to talk to someone who is educated in Thai law. Who knows, some of it may have been incorporated holus bolus from English law. That'd make it easier. I'd love to study Thai law. Anyone got any ideas where?

recommend you steer clear of someone "educated in thai law" and find someone who knows it ;)

  17. how about, emmmm let' see...have a think...think...think...AH HA! got it! maybe do not ask for and take legal advice from folks here? maybe go find someone with that actual technical training and expertise? that would be a start.

That would assume that no one on TV has neither a legal background nor work with contracts, of course.

i stand "corrected," allow me to rephrase: how about not seeking from or listening to folks on TV which is not much different then asking all the folks at the local watering holes...and, instead, seeking out competent legal counsel?

  18. That pretty much confirms what I have thought since my first year leaving here i.e. Thais are about the worst drivers in the world. DO be VERY careful anytime you drive or ride on any road in Thailand.

I've travelled the world extensively, and never seen drivers as bad as in Thailand.

I suspect that you exaggerate to make a point. I have seen far worse driving in Africa, India and Sri Lanka, but as I was only there for 3/4 weeks at a time, it paled into insignificance compared to all of the gorgeous sights.

However, as I live on Samui - I do see bad driving every hour. The standard here is very bad (but not the worst in the world).

you may have seen what ever you saw, very cool that you saw all that wherever...but the satistics are the statistics. 12,000 DEAD, not just hurt, DEAD. Thailand number 19 in the world in terms of population, Thailand number 2 in terms of traffic fatalities, DEAD. Ergo, Thai roads, and I would then, excuse me for this...logically...concluded, Thais are the worst drivers on the planet...if you think, of course, that driving that kills people is "bad"
