  1. Yes I have, that will be the same Northumbria that did not join as part of England until 1237. So prior to that date the notion of being English is wrong.

In fact I believe the original copy of the Magna Carta ( 1215 ) ceded Northumbria to Scotland, however the Pope overturned it.

Now we are getting pedantic. I am not anti-English, far from it. The Magna Carta was the greatest document ever produced and it was solely an English achievement.

Going back on topic about the English language, I believe the official language at time of the Magna Carta was Norman French, the Normans were Norse Scandanavian by descent, they invaded a land which had a melting pot of Gaels, Angles, Saxons and various other ethnic mixes. At the time of the invasion the Western Isles of Scotland were under Norwegian control. The language of the Church at the time was Latin,

My point is, English is a mongrel language, but it is a truly beautiful mongrel language. It has taken influences from everywhere and adapted these influences for itself.

This ability to adapt and absorb is the English languages' greatest strength. We native speakers should be immensely proud of it, it is undoubtedly the most egalitarian language in the world, and possibly the most egalitarian instrument in human history.

Aye but I never mentioned English or England, you did, I said Sassenachs. The Northumbrians were Anglo Saxons, Sassenach is from the old Gaelic word for Saxon and was used for both Anglo Saxons in what is now England and those in what is now lowland Scotland.

Correct, but you were sleverring on about the Kingdom of Northumbria.

Please state exactly what it was I was "slevering" about in regards to the Kingdom of Northumbria ?

  3. Your havering......I love it when the English think they know their history. happy.png

Really, care to point out exactly what is the "havering" part ?

You led with the bold statement......so you tell me when the English conducted said mass breeding programme with our Bonnie Lassies? tongue.png

I already did, guess you've never heard of the Kingdom of Northumbria.

  4. The one that fascinates me the most among the foggy isles languages is Welsh . . . odd, odder, oddest!

Scottish Gaelic, Irish Gaelic, Welsh and Benton all have their roots in the same Germanic language.....as pointed our earlier the orginal celts were German

No they don't; they are goidelic languages.

Not quite, Scottish Gaelic, Irish Gaelic and Manx are Goidelic languages whilst Welsh, Breton and Cornish are Brythonic languages. They are all members of the Celtic languages group and are not Germanic or descended from a Germanic language, though both Celtic and Germanic language groups are members of the Indo-European language group.

Scots is a West Germanic language and not descended from the North Germanic Norse language spoken by the vikings as claimed early on in this thread. Scots is descended from the Anglo Saxon language introduced by the Northumbrians when they conquered and colonised most of lowland Scotland. So the only Scots who can really claim to be Celts are the Highlanders, the rest are the offspring of Sassenachs smile.png

Perhaps this topic would be better off in 'Plants, Pets and Vets' forum?

I should of posted it there, mods please feel free to move it.

They wasn't really walking as such, I guess wrigging their way forward would be a better description. The wiki link states they're from central and south America, so I'm guessing they're an introduced species to south east Asia.

Lucky for the fish a Farang happened to chance by it, I guess it would of been in the pot if a thai had got their first.

  6. I lived many years in Asian Muslim countries before and I am glad I am living here now. I am convinced that, despite all the shortcomings, the basic philosophies prevailing here in Thailand make better and gentler people.

You obviously have not lived in Malaysia or Indonesia. The muslims there are very good people.

Try googling Bali bombing or Indonesia beheading christian girls

  7. A couple of years back I was out on my afternoon motosai ride through darkside Pattaya when I spotted 2 small figures moving in the road ahead. At first I thought they was rats but when I got there they were fish, 1 of which had just been run over by a passing truck. I quickly dismounted and luckily there was a large pond right by the road so I picked up the 1 remaining alive fish and chucked it in.

So anyone know what it is and why they might be in the road, my guess is they fell off the back off a passing fishermans truck but the way they was semi walking I wondered if maybe it's a type of fish that can travel short distances over land.

  8. So the Indian guy asked the girls to go back to is hotel room assuming they were prostitutes, and got mugged for asking?

Had he kept it in his pants he would've been in a better position.

Where exactly does it say he asked the girls to go back to his room ?

In the part you failed to grasp.

"Mr. Nirjun explained he was walking along the beach opposite the Montien Hotel with friends when a group of two women and three men approached Mr. Nirjun and attempted to take items from his trouser pocket following a suggestion the women join Mr. Nirjun at his hotel."

Again I ask you where exactly does it say HE asked the girls to go back to his room ?

  9. On my first trip to Pattaya back in 2004, I was at Big C. I had to use the toilet downstairs there but did not have any small baht coins for the tissue box dispenser. I really had to go and there was not much time. One of the ladies probably a cleaning lady, gave me the 2 baht I think it was for the machine. I said I would be right back, but when I came out she was gone. Just one of those little things I won't forget. A small act on her part, but it helped me a lot.

You use paper to wipe your ass.... yuck.

Paper is the only thing that will clean you 'just inside', these spray hoses are good for outside but will not prevent a $h!t stain later in the day.

Your fingers aren't just for picking your nose with.

  10. Although George Michael would be in a high risk group for contracting HIV/AIDS, I doubt he is suffering from HIV related illness. If he were HIV positive, he would be taking medication that would have/should have restored his immune system to a functional level. He is not poor and he would be able to get the best medical treatment available. I doubt he would tour with an impaired immune system.

Doing tours is physically (and I would assume emotionally) quite draining and it is not uncommon for musicians to get ill.

Again, hope he makes a speedy recovery.

To be taking medication he would first need to be diagnosed, and if he's still not taken a HIV test as he claimed a few years back he may well be undiagnosed up until now.

  11. RIP - Another unnecessary death due to riding too fast. And probably a lack of a helmet.

Dont think a helmet would help much when being driven over by a truck.

Hope the driver of the truck is charged with causing death by dangerous driving, very much doubt it though.

What makes you think he was driving dangerously?

His reportedly running over someone who'd been traveling in front of him, something that should never happen if he was driving with a safe following distance. That and the statement that he was "driving at a high rate of speed".

I'm happy to go with the report until such time as it's proved wrong, feel free to provide us with the facts if you know different.

Did you witness the accident, so that you know the truck driver is guilty? Maybe it was his fault, maybe the biker's, maybe six of one and half a dozen of the other; damned if I know, as I only have the newspaper report to go by.

If as is reported the truck driver was following the motorcycle then he is obviously guilty of either being too close or not paying attention to the road. It's quite simple, if you leave a sufficient gap between you and the vehicle in front, 2 seconds being the rule of thumb, then you'll have enough time to stop if anything happens to that vehicle be it them slamming their brakes on or in this case falling off their bike.

  13. how about cleaning up all immoral stuff. I can't recognise how it was only 15 years ago. Last year I went there in the hope to spend holidays with my family just like we did 15 years ago, I was frighten, scared. It's changed so much, thoght we were somewhere else, not Thailand! :bah:

Agree. The only time I went to Pattaya, I was totally ashamed to be a farang, utterly disgusted at the state of the shirtless tattooed morons littering the beach, drinking Chang in the sun, and the girls, giving my wife the evil eye. Never again.

Never mind the war on drugs, how about a war on Pattaya; cleaning it up!

What do the peeps do on the beaches you feel at home on then, sit there in full dinner suits drinking tea ?

  14. Exactly! The war between India and Great Britain didn't happen because the Brits were good guys. The same with problems in Africa. And, in times of war the British generals treated Canadians and Australians as cannon fodder. Galipoli comes to mind.

Oh really?......so there were no British troops at Gallipoli? I'm amazed at people's ignorance of history.

Sure there were British troops at Gallipoli, but it was the Aussies that were told to charge into over whelming odds with no hope of survival or success.

I'd be interested to know how the British troops who suffered more than twice the number of deaths at Gallipoli than the Aussies did met their deaths, were they poisoned by out of date tea or something ?
