It took a fact finding mission for the Democrats to identify that water shortages and crushing debt are major problems in the Northeast? Where have they been for the last 20 years? Just goes to show the contempt and lack of interest they have had for these voters in the past. Only now, because they have been flushed from their traditional strongholds, are the Democrats starting to realize that people outside the big cities also have problems that need to be addressed by government.

"It was reported that the 21 state parties were divided into three groups over the Kaeng Krachan issue, with four countries, namely Indonesia, China, Brazil and Cuba, supporting Thailand’s nomination."
At least three of which are well known for their "treatment" of ethnic minorities,

In this country, "being cleared" of a wrongdoing does not necessarily equate to "not being guilty" of that wrongdoing.

"Missions" (producing a book of all things!) and "campaigns" by stores will have little effect in the short to medium term, given that people here have little sense of community. There is a strong sense of family, and most people keep their yards clean... even going to the extent of sweeping the bare soil after their chickens have had a go. However, if there happens to be an empty block of land near by then a lot of local rubbish ends up there. As in other counties, strong laws that ban plastic usage (and are actually enforced!) are the only short term answer.

The hide of the ungrateful Chinese. We go to a lot of trouble to find ways to relieve their tourists of their money here, and their government has the temerity to insist that durian production follows hygienic food processing practices

So sad for the country... but did anyone expect a different outcome?

His statement attributed the issues raised over party administration to the party’s novelty and that it was composed of different political factions.
The PPRP is certainly a "novelty" but the cause has nothing to do with the existence of factions... all parties have them. The problem is that the "leader" lacks leadership and management skills in all but the military sense and is too arrogant to face the truth that the coalition is likely to fail because of this.

I'm sure he didn't mean to commit such a serious crime... it's just that he enjoyed the inactive post so much.

What amazes me is how FFP seem to have had little trouble finding the CCT footage. This indicates that the BIB didn't (or were ordered not to) look too hard.

How can there be no more changes as the line-up hasn't been announced yet? Surely time for some last minute negotiations.

You can write anything on such a form, and in Thailand readily support it with credible looking fake documents. I was wondering if the answers would be made available for public scrutiny, but then reality sank in.

"I would like to call on all politicians to be patient and help prevent the incident from escalating into a situation,” Korn added.
Sorry mate, but sadly for you and your sell-out friends in the "government" it already is a situation. If the men in green (or their paid goons in brown) behind this were not so stupid, they would realize that this is the sort of action that can galvanize people and bring down a government. The ridiculous aspect of it all is that Sirawith was apparently off to study in India this week and would have been out of their hair for a while. Now, he is still here and right in their face. Go Ja New!

Thailand along with Indonesia, Mexico, Taiwan and India are the top five countries where locals believe hospitality to be in their DNA.
To me, these hardly seem the most hospitable countries in the world. I think the respondents misinterpreted the word "hospitality" to mean "desire to screw as much money as possible from visiting foreigners". I would agree that this seems to be in the DNA of many people here.

One reason the government is unlikely to scrap the lottery is that (according to the great wizard of Wiki) at least 28% of revenues (over 4bn baht) is distributed to supposed "charities, community projects and scholarships". Although I am sure that most of these will stand up to scrutiny (eg Thai Red Cross), allocation is actually discretionary and senior MPs have a say in how money is spent in their electorates or otherwise. A nice little slush fund!

"...successful negotiation of fairer loan contracts..."
It looks as if the original loans still stand. If so the side-show in handing back the deeds has achieved little more than reducing the usurious interest component of the debts. If the owners couldn't pay back the loans before, what makes the government think they can service them now, Seems to me that if the loans remain unpaid the lenders can still take action in court to force sale of assets, including the land.

This is a strange project, given that the "private concessionaires" are a consortium led by none other than CP Group, which seems to have little expertise to offer in the building of railways. As the only wholly Thai engineering company involved appears to be Italian Thai Development, who have some serious PR issues these days, I can only wonder if CP taking the lead role is little more than a smoke screen to make sure that the action is shared among the right families

"...immigration would step in to provide that extra level of help and convenience to passengers."
Good luck with that. I am not sure these words are in the Immigration Officer dictionary... unless of course there is something in it for someone.

One possibility is that he knows that when the cabinet is announced and he can't meet his promises to all parties, his coalition will implode and he won't be able to govern... a big loss of face of this happens during the ASEAN side-show.

PM orders probe into alleged corruption in school lunch program
in Thailand News
Posted
Here is a creative solution... randomly (and secretly) choose a school each week to have its lunches delivered to Parliament House for our politicians to eat. And send the politician's lunches to the school! Might make an interesting comparison.
