The checklist SpouseAndCivilPartner and ChildSettlement has the following text.
PLEASE NOTE:
(a) There is no requirement for all Thai language documents to be translated.
I didn't get any translations done for my wife and stepsons application, still waiting on an answer though.

I don't know anything about either company but if you HAVE to use a company make sure they are OISC registered.
The alternative is to save a lot of money and do it yourself, many many people have done this successfully.

Can somebody advised me on the chances of refusal after 6 weeks or would this have been in the first couple of we, also if my wife receives the visa and while she is in Bangkok get her passport and ID card surname change? we never had chance to go back to the embassy to register the marriage in the uk do people recommend we do this in Thailand or back in the uk?
From what I can gather refusals take as long to process as successful applications.
I'm not sure how easy it is to change the surname your wife uses now as you've already applied for the visa.
You don't need to register the marriage in the UK but you can pay the British embassy in bangkok to do This It would seem you can do the same thing from within the UK as they are effectively only storing the certificate for you.

I hope so, I might be in a position to tell you for sure in about 4 weeks.
My wife is in the same position, she applied for a settlement visa about 4 weeks ago now. Included in the application, along with the cert from the IOM she included a covering note, a copy of her current and previous ID card, also originals with copies of her previous passport, marriage certificate and name change document.
Should we be lucky enough to have the application succeed I am planning on making sure that the same documents are available to present to the immigration officer at border control.

Hi Steve,
Your wife doesn't have to change her name and as she hasn't she isn't yet known by another name so I would leave the Other Names question blank.
Regarding online or paper I had a similar dilemma, we had already completed the paper forms when I read about Settlement requiring online applications. We submitted the paper forms anyway in late June of this year, not a problem they were accepted.
It seems they do accept that not everyone has easy access to the internet.

That's a long time to wait for an answer 16, weeks.
We should be due for an update on the UKBA sight with regard to processing times any time soon I would think as today is the middle of the month (ish)

This topic has been covered a few times I think.
You can certify it yourself by writing on the copy "I certify that this is a true copy of the original" signing it and dating it.
Some will say you only need to sign and date it but I went the extra mile just in case.
Another wise precaution, always better to be safe than sorry, is to copy and certify every page in your passport, not the blank ones though.

UK Settlement application submitted on 28th June for my wife and stepson.
Nothing can do now, have to wait.......

Just a thought, perhaps the ones that are processed in just a few days are unlucky people who have had their applications turned down because of an obvious error or omission in the application?
I'm sure there must be due process to go through for every application, checks to confirm that the claims we make are true, these must take time.
I do appreciate the frustration, we submitted an application for my wife and stepson just over a week ago and the waiting is killing me already. If there was a pay for fast track option I would have chosen that in a heartbeat.

Our experience from a successful tourist visa application was that the folder was returned in a bit of a disorganised mess with some documentation missing, the really important ones were returned though.
Not wishing to worry you unduly but I am sure I read somewhere that if you submit an "original" document that you want returned it is best to also submit a photocopy along with it with it.
With our current settlement application I was very careful to supply a copy of the original documents that we needed to be returned.

perhaps all ECO staff were put on other visa types so the stats looked good for the end of the month, lets hope next week brings good news.
