The following works for us.

Thai TV DooTV a 2 year subscription for around a hundred quid, less than a pound a week and a huge back catalouge of shows. You need a decent machine and broadband connection though.

Skype for calls back home with a unlimited world subscription means the wife and stepson can talk for as long as they like for less than a tenner a month.

However I would recommend a backup for whatever internet based telephone solution you use as they are all dodgy from time to time, for a back up we use VoipStunt

Currently struggling with a bank account for someone with no UK credit history though, suggestions would be appreciated.

Also struggling to find a source of B'lah (however you might spell it in English) that the missus finds acceptable, apparently the stuff from Raan Thai is not the same as mother makes.

I have no problems maintaining this list it doesn't take much time and I know how much it meant to me while my wife and I were waiting, initially expecting a 6-7 week waiting time but ending up being nearly 12 weeks in the end.

The wife and I use facebook so will be happy to play on there too if someone wants to set it up.

Well I arrived back in the UK at 7am this morning with the family in tow, here starts a new adventure for us all. Wife and stepson are sleeping right now I am trying to resist the temptation to do the same, it is a tiresome journey.

A sincere thanks to everyone for their support and contributions, it has made this long wait bearable. I'm quite sure that if it had been a 12 week wait and I didn't know everyone was in the same boat then I'd have been a complete wreck by the end of it.

I'm lucky enough to be off to Thailand tomorrow (I can't wait to see my wife and stepson again) but my access to the internet will be intermittent at best for most of my stay (10 days) so I wont be able to maintain the list much during that time. I will be back though, I'd like to see this through and keep the list running until people stop contributing.

"The UK Border Agency at The British Embassy in Bangkok is currently receiving a high volume of visa applications. Please help us to continue to provide a good service by not contacting VFS or The British Embassy unless your visa application has exceeded our published processing times."

"We are currently processing applications within our published targets of 15 working days for non-settlement and 12 weeks for settlement applications"

So that says to me once 12 weeks has past we can start to chase them.

However quite how one goes about this and how much good it would do is an unknown.

The telephone numbers posted on the Embassy website come with the note "(Please note the Consular/Main Embassy lines are NOT for visa enquiries) " and the email address for visas goes of to vfs global and promises a response in 20 working days.

What to do ? It's most frustrating !

Hi Jason, can't agree more, this waiting is driving me mad too, not a great deal we can do about it though.... Other than wait some more of course.

This page shows the SLA that they aim for, 95% in 12 weeks and 100% in 24.

Apparently June is the peak month for applications of all types so I'm not alarmed that the current processing times are way out there just a little disappointed.

I think having the list is both a blessing and a curse. If it wasn't for the fact that I know everyone else is experiencing long waiting times I would be pestering the Embassy by now thinking that something was up.

Just a idea but presumably in 6 months time it should all be over for us hopefully with favourable results -- maybe near to christmas a number of us on this thread could meet up on a weekends afternoon in central London (or similiar) for some drinks or food (or ??) just a idea - be nice to catchup when we all have the result we hopefully get and have been working so hard for... ideas?

Having gone through all of this, some 20-odd years ago, I feel for everyone in this situation.

Re the meet-up, I suspect that the best venue will be the Wat in Wimbledon, for Loy Kratong festival, when just-about every Thai and spouse (collective-noun spice, right ?!) & (after a few years) kids in London & the South-East will meet-up, binge on real-Thai-cooking in the food-market, and gossip until the water-buffaloes come home.

Keep your spirits up, your upper-lips stiff, and you'll win-through in-the-end. Chok Dee !

That's not a bad idea, be nice to put faces to nick names and see what kind of a diverse group of people we might end up with.

If we are fortunate to have a favourable result in time I will surely be taking the family (Sun Nov 21) this year and probably every year after.
