  1. If that's your standard of corruption/bribery, you'll see it everywhere.

In Thailand, though, gift-giving in return for doing one's job well is not considered bribery as long as it is not payment in return for either neglecting one's duties, doing something against one's duties, or giving an unfair advantage.

Very common, very accepted, and very legal.

It not my "standard" its just how I have been taught, and such things are not allowed for officials in the environment or community I lived in for 45 years in my country, so yes it would seem "different" to me and was my interpretation of events. Perhaps I am wrong but that's how I saw it.

Interesting interpretation, "for doing a good job" well as they say , you live and learn and extremely difficult to prove otherwise too I would imagine.

  2. Anybody that has spent time in Thailand is aware and has heard the many stories of bribery and corruption.

But has anyone actually witnessed it ?

I was astounded yesterday when visiting an official establishment and during the hour or so I was there I noticed, 1 bottle of whiskey, a net full of fruit, a large sack of rice, a case of beer, several carrier type bags with hot take out food all being handed over at different times.

These were seperate incidents in just over 1 hour, and before anyone suggests it, no they werent just doing shopping for the staff.

It was quite obvious by the manner and response of the giver and receiver that it was a "thank you" for something.

I suppose it could be argued it was everybody's birthday and they were "gifts" but I doubt that.

Anyone else seen it actually play out in front of them ?

  3. The 7-11 works as franchise, yes, but the money you take is NOT all yours, the profit is shared also.(as I understand it).

Thats why they are open as long as they are and never stop, by the time everything is paid and everyone is paid, it is by no means "an easy buck".

This is also why others simply set up something very similar under the name of 7 Mart or 8-12.......then you dont share anything and all your hard work comes back 100%.

  4. Yep, one woke my wife and I when we were sleeping one night.

    A true '<deleted>' moment.

TP.......I am on the edge of my seat....please tell us more......I need to know!

Calm down, it was the gardener. giggle.gif ............................laugh.png

Had a similiar thing, turned out to be the guy collecting for the Water rates, wont wait for us to wake up and comes at 5 am, persistent guy.smile.png

  5. as said already, should have reported it, you continued to use it knowing of a potential problem therefore your responsibility. Sorry mate you got to pay up, may seem unfair in the balance given the units age etc and elsewhere that might be a reasonable argument, but in Thailand, just pay its alot easier and far less hassle. Bite the bullet, get it sorted and move on.

  6. i am sorry but i have to say a bangkeaw would be the last breed i would own, they are loyal and make good guard dogs but if they ever get loose you could find yourself in trouble and they do bark a lot.the only experiance i have of them is that one lives by me and he is so dangerous when he gets loose it frightens me,for 3yrs.i have tried to make freinds with him, give him bones, treets, and as his owners work away i used to feed him he would get the same as my dog, chkn, beef, liver, veg and biscuits till the day he bit my hand trying to retrieve the bowl.so think twice before you get one or you might end up with not many friends.i always remember what my bil told me you break into a house with a bangkeaw you die.

MEATBOY ! wassup ? you dont like answering your messages ?

Never had a problem with mine (she is a cross though), she rarely barks unless there is good reason, very protective and a real softy, as long as we are around. Loves kids, but I dont think she could eat a whole one.thumbsup.gif

  7. Yup Hotel California, Zombie and Scorpions "Wind Of Change" are the three farang songs most Thais know.

If you find yourself in a Thai karaoke bar chances are you'll be choosing from these three.

I think John Denver's Country Roads trumps them all, if you listen carefully.

Yep havnt lived til you've heard Cuntwy Woads..........amazing !, all the above songs were being played one night when I was camping in the mountains on one of my first trips to Thailand, singing around a bonfire with BBQ, great night !

  8. I saw a trash picker pull out a massive syringe an put it aside for safe keeping.

One of the more disgusting things I've seen in Thailand. Picking through medical waste.

i wonder if they clean and re-use other personal things?

    arrrgggghhhhhhhhhhhh thats GROSS !!

  9. I asked a local Dentist about this with my MIL and was quoted 6 - 10 k baht dependent on what was involved after taking the mould etc and what type was wanted.

I didnt want her looking like Red Rum ! it was strongly recommended that it would be better done in Bangkok. She's now waiting for the reaming few to be removed (get worse) as she is a big baby.
