  1. The OP is either blessed with accute powers of observation or cursed with a severe case of judgementall prejudice.

On the basis of the evidence pesented by expats in Thailand it is impossible to discern if the OP has been blessed or cursed.

From what I've seen so far, the expat community here in BBK is very different to those in Sing and KL.

A quick look inside the pubs/bars dotted along Sukhumwit crystalizes this assertion.

The crem de la crem is of course in Pattaya a must see for all new expats. A short taxi ride.

The social misfits are hidden up in villages and in the hills up north. These are the type of folk one needs to be very wary off.

Issan people and the expats that settle there are the salt of the earth. You can have the tourist areas and BKK. I want the country, the real Thailand.

  2. NeverSure is that what You are? I DON'T mean any harm with asking You that! I felt the same before I moved to Thailand. But I think that You must have a long time economical perspective of Your future in Thailand. You can absolutely live here within Your budget plus Your savings.

Especially if You stay in rural area with INTERNET, i totally agree with You on that point. BUT if You meet a lovely lady and start a family things are going to change dramatically. I mean money wise...

I would say go for it!! BUT be "street smart" and take care of Your money...Best of luck!

Well, I am very truthful not only in my revealing my financial situation, but in my desire to be frugal. I'm afraid of inflation and wanting to be ready for it. I also mentioned that I have US$1500 per month which will stop in about 12 years so I want to save it.

Not only do I have savings, but I have things of value to sell before I come. One example would be my late model Ford F150 4x4 pickup which is free and clear. I have other things of noticeable value such as an extensive gun and ammo collection which I would sell on gunbroker.com.

So, I would arrive with substantial savings and $US3k per month dropping to $US1500 per month in 12 years. I plan to save that $1500 per month. Anything I buy initially including a scooter would come out of pocket.

Who knows what the final $1500 per month will really be worth in 12+ years? Since I can't know, I must prepare. Therefore, I hope to live on little and really put some money away because it's all I'll ever have.

As for getting married, I really doubt it. I'm 66 and been there done that. I don't get under the ether over some woman any more. I know what they are and it isn't just Thailand. I'm really not interested in being someone's whole family's ATM machine. I'm not dumb enough to believe that some cute young thing would be attracted to me for any reason other than that.

Don't count yourself out. There are plenty of old and ugly girls in Thailand, and there are also women closer to your age that are attractive and not out just for your money. Ease into it, use your head (big one on your shoulders), be smart and you will be fine. I have been married to a cute young thing for the past twenty years living mostly in Hawaii and a few years in Maryland and intend to make the move to rural Thailand in a couple of years (I am only 49 years old). We are going to build a modest house (est $30,000 USD), and our plan is to budget $1000 per month for living expenses (but we est. spending less than $700 each month). $1500 per month is more than enough in Issan (Buriram, Khorat, Surin, etc.) or Chang Mai. Chang Mai is cooler temperature wise. Make the move you will be fine on the amount of money you have.

Yeah, Chiang Mai. About women. I'm serious. If it isn't PC to just have a girlfriend, then I'll settle for a massage. I've spent all the money and had all the hassle I ever need from marriage.

Understand. It is PC to just have a girlfriend. Wish you luck and enjoy your retirement. I will be a year or two behind you.

  3. Met my wife in Phuket in 1992. Made a couple of more visits, got a marraige Visa and brought her to the USA and got married. We have been married for 20 years and I have never regretted a single day. Our son will graduate High School soon and we are planning on retiring to rural Buriram in a little over two years. I am a pretty good judge of character and that is why I took a chance on her, the bonus is she is also very lovely. I could not ask for a better wife (unless she was rich), and I am completely happy.

  5. Lahansai is a nice quiet Thai village. When I first visited there in 1993 the locals acted as if they had never seen a white man. I was waiting for the bus to Nang Rong and a school girl drove her bike into the ditch because she was staring at me over her shoulder, not watching where she was going. Last visit 2010 there were more farangs at the evening market.

  6. Planting rice from dawn to dusk: 200 Baht without any additional benefits (maybe there is a simple meal and water).

Being moved with 10 people on the back of a pickup truck.

  7. I raced on the US east coast (PHRF C East Coast champions 1988) and now on the west coast in PHRF-A offshore and have been wondering about crewing opportunities out of Phuket.

I haven't seen any mention of racing on TV but my search skillls suck.

There are regetta's held out of Phuket. I remember seeing an article on them on the phuket gazette news site.

  8. By all means, ban it. It, free speech, truth. Ban them all ! After all, you wouldn't want certain groups of people to act violently every time their feelings get hurt. Oh wait. those certain groups act violently quite often anyways, and apparently have no problem finding multitudes of other reasons for committing violence and murder in the name of their religion.

Keep in mind that even if you were to find a way of totally eliminating this clip from the internet, it won't disappear, and neither will the violence that certain religious segments of society seem to think is perfectly justified whenever their whittle feelings get hurt. They will find other excuses to do the same, or worse, because their RELIGION justifies it.

But go ahead, ban the video. Cave in to the terrorists. Become Quislings. Suck up and try to appease them the way Europe tried to suck up and appease Hitler in the mid to late 1930's. Worked well for them, didn't it ?

Oh wait. I seem to recall the outcome of all that a@@kissing and appeasement was something called World War II ? Ah well, guess that's the price you pay when you prefer to prostate yourself and suppress the truth, rather than stand up to those that feel they are justified in using violence and murder to achieve their goals.

Sure glad all those Libyans have long memories and are still grateful to the Americans for all they did in helping to get rid of Gaddafi LESS THAN A YEAR AGO. Little wonder the US doesn't want to get involved in Syria. Seems the more you help certain groups of people, the more they resent you and want to stab you in the back, while (usually) still holding out their hands begging for money.

Great comment. Why is it that only the Muslims cannot control themselves when religion is slighted. When a crucifix was put on display in a jar of urine, or a picture of Christ was made out of dung how many people were killed by the angry mobs of Christians around the world? If everyone around the world would just convert to Islam and obey sharia law everything would be fine.

    Go home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Why, I am home.

  10. I am annoyed by foreigners who have gone so "Thai-ier than thou" that they argue that the f-rang name calling is a great thing and never insulting and/or racist. I also don't think WE as foreigners should use the word talking about each other. Like I said I consider it a negative thing about Thailand. We can't change that, so it's wise to ACCEPT it, but to PROMOTE is a step nobody needs to take!

JT, no one is "promoting" the use of the word....certainly not me. It is what it is. To me, farang is EXACTLY the same as the word Caucasian. Or Asian. Do you find those words offensive?

I have lived in Hawaii for the last 30 years. Here I am called a "haole" which originally meant foriegner, but it is now it is often used as a type of racial slur. Either was it does not bother me.

  11. As an American, these are a few of the reasons that I am here:

    1. Police are not on every street corner.

    2. Taking an airplane does not require you to have your privates fondled by a pervert.

    3. The corruption in Thailand is much lower than in America.

    4. The women are not ashamed to be a woman nor act like one.

    5. The women on average are 25k smaller.

    6. Problems can usually be resolved without a lawyer and huge expenses.

    7. Healthcare is much cheaper tho not as good.

    8. 0bama bumper stickers are nowhere to be found.

My country seems to be having a few problems lately.

As an American that is retiring to Thailand in less than three years, I qgree with all of the above. I will be retiring to Issan though and not Chang Mai.
