  1. Book a hotel close to a BTS station. Figure out what sights you want to see (search on this forum, or you tube "Bangkok tourist attractions") and go see them. I would also reserve a morning for walking around Lumpini Park (I love watching those huge Malaysian water monitors). Eat a bunch of local Thai food (outside of a hotel). Enjoy.

  2. These types of discussions are stupid. Everyone here who's a climatologist, please put up your hand. Oh right, that's nobody.

99% of the world's scientific community has come to a consensus that climate change is real, and is being caused by human intervention.

I would argue that being a climatologist is not a requirement to recognizing you are being sold a load of bull $hit. I would also like to add that 99% of the world's scientific community are NOT climatologists either, does that mean that they should shut their pie holes and keep their opinion to themselves also?

  3. Well after reading al of the my house got flooded posts some people came to realise that Thailand has had problems with floods for century's thats why many old houses in rural Thailand are built on stilts .

Apparently buying a parcel of cheap land from noi or toys family in nakhon somewhere and building that million dollar retirement villa has left a sour taste in their mouth and bank account.

So much for climate change. But according to some people its al a certain politicians fault ........

I am not sure why the Thai rural houses are built on stilts, but in Issan I think it had something to do with keeping snakes, and bugs etc out of the dwelling amoung other reasons.
  4. Just out of interest, have any of you guys who rely on savings ever enquired into the cost of cancer treatment. It would be interesting to know how your nest eggs measure up to whatever the figure might be.

For those that never had cancer, personally, I'd rather let nature take it's course ( with sufficient morphine to take the pain away ) than go through the hell on earth of treatment again. Sometimes it's really not worth it.
A good friend of mine in the USA is a breast cancer survivor. She said the same thing, she would not go through the cancer treatment (chemo and radiation) again and would rather let nature take it's course.

  5. My mother in law tried to get a tourist VISA on her own (for a visit) and was denied. I had been married to her daughter for 15 years (or so) at that time and we live in Hawaii (USA). The next time we visited Thailand we spent a couple of days in Bangkok and I went to the US Embassy with her and we eventually got a multiple entry tourist visa.

The US Embassy basically wants some kind of assurance that the person they are granting the visa to will return home after a visit. Things such as money in the bank (no money in my case), property ownership, and family members (husband, other siblings, grandchildren, etc.) that remain in Thailand are all factors.

My mother in law was so nervous that she couldn't correctly answer how many children and grandchildren she had when asked by embassy staff (in perfect Thai). He finally looked at me and asked if she was just coming for a visit, I replied yes, and he stamped the visa approved. I don't think she would have gotten the visa if I had not been there.

I recommend researching the precise requirements for a tourist visa, make sure they get all their ducks in a row before you get there, and then visit the embassy with them when they apply for the visa. This worked for me. My MIL visited once for about a month, got homesick, and returned home. She has expressed zero desire to return, but she got to see how we live.

  6. It can be found at most every Thai local market, I would be surprised if it wasn't sold. If you cannot find grated coconut in Thailand I suggest that you really need to get out a bit more (IMO).

  7. I spent three days and two nights in a private hospital in Buriram (Nangrong) in June 2013. I had a private room, blood and urine labs every six hours, and an excellent Doctor (IMO). Total cost including food was less than 16,000 Baht.

  8. Organic food is over rated (IMO), overpriced, and studies have shown it to not be any better than non-organic food. How about buyer beware (caveat emptor) and eat at the street food stalls that serve good food which lots of Thai's frequent. Is a nanny state like Singapore really an option? Don't get me wrong, I like Singapore for a short visit but would never want to live there.

  9. I had a stroke a few years ago at age 47 (mostly recovered now), my total cholesterol at the time was 198, but I also had borderline high blood pressure (hypertension). I would recommend you find a good doctor, get a thorough exam and ask about getting on cholesterol medicine.

Take it from someone that has been there and make sure your blood pressure and cholesterol are where they should be. There are medications available if diet and exercise are not enough. I would recommend using them if a doctor determines that this is an option for you.

    Good luck.
