3000 baht to rebuild the top end, replace seals and re-seat the pistons sounds fairly reasonable if the work is good quality. Sounds like you paid 6000 baht for poor quality work previously.

Concur, it is radiant barrier.

Book a hotel close to a BTS station. Figure out what sights you want to see (search on this forum, or you tube "Bangkok tourist attractions") and go see them. I would also reserve a morning for walking around Lumpini Park (I love watching those huge Malaysian water monitors). Eat a bunch of local Thai food (outside of a hotel). Enjoy.

I watch fox news, and MSNBC, CNN, Bloomberg, CNBC, and others as well as internet sources such as CNN, FOX. Roll Call, Real Clear Politics, and even the notorious Drudge Report (which is just a compilation of news links from other sources). If a topic is interesting I will read a book (or books) about the topic. For TV FOX is my favorite, but I like to watch MSNBC regularly to listen to the what the other side thinks and listen to their reasoning behind their argument.
Must be nice to live in such simplicity, bet you watch FOX "news".Maybe if someone had asked John D. Rockefeller what the climate would do he would have given the same prediction he did when asked about what the stock market would do.
"Fluctuate."
I have found that many with a more left view of the world prefer to watch news that agrees with their world view and don't want to listen to other opinions. The left in general is for diversity of everything, except diversity of thought.
The left is for science, but in the case of global warming the science is settled and everyone should accept carbon taxes that do absolutely nothing to stop the rise of CO2 in the atmosphere (China and India don't have CO2 taxes and are major sources of CO2).
I don't argue that warming hasn't occurred, I don't deny that man may contribute to warming, but the UN IPCC has greatly overestimated the effect that CO2 has on the environment (every IPCC report on climate change has overestimated the amount of warming). It is factual that every single climate estimate from the UN has overestimated the amount of warming, and CO2 levels have continued to increase since 1996, but temperatures have steadied out. Remember the "theory" that greenhouse gases (primarily CO2) causes heat to be trapped which will increase the average global temperature. CO2 levels have continued to increase, but the temperature increase has paused. I don't know why it paused but if the theory is correct the temperature should be increasing. Failure to address this pause in the latest UN IPCC report indicates (to me anyway) that they don't have a clue what is causing the pause, they are grasping at straws and will try any BS claim (i.e. "the deep ocean is trapping heat") to keep the gravy train flowing. Heat rises, even in the ocean.
Science can never be settled when valid questions remain, no matter how many times the UN IPCC and green lobby restate that it has been settled already and everyone should shut up and open their wallets.

These types of discussions are stupid. Everyone here who's a climatologist, please put up your hand. Oh right, that's nobody.
99% of the world's scientific community has come to a consensus that climate change is real, and is being caused by human intervention.
I would argue that being a climatologist is not a requirement to recognizing you are being sold a load of bull $hit. I would also like to add that 99% of the world's scientific community are NOT climatologists either, does that mean that they should shut their pie holes and keep their opinion to themselves also?

I am not sure why the Thai rural houses are built on stilts, but in Issan I think it had something to do with keeping snakes, and bugs etc out of the dwelling amoung other reasons.Well after reading al of the my house got flooded posts some people came to realise that Thailand has had problems with floods for century's thats why many old houses in rural Thailand are built on stilts .
Apparently buying a parcel of cheap land from noi or toys family in nakhon somewhere and building that million dollar retirement villa has left a sour taste in their mouth and bank account.
So much for climate change. But according to some people its al a certain politicians fault ........

Don't believe in Global Warming
I believe there is a Significant Climate Change occurring.
Some times and places are warmer, some cooler, some wetter and some dryer.
I blame the media for miss naming it.
Now every time some place gets cold, some numb skull cries " see? it not warming!"
Unfortunately it is still very profitable to destroy the environment.
I was going to vote on your "Climate change Poll"
But when you only asked about warming, I decided not to vote!
The theory is that as CO2 content of the atmosphere increases, the global average temperature increases. If CO2 content increases (it has), but the measured global average temperature does not increase there is something wrong with the theory as stated.
Computer models are not science, science involves observations. If your observations (measured data) do not do what your theory predicts will occur, there may be a flaw in the theory. Almost every model used by the UN IPCC (something like 213 out of 214 models) have greatly overestimated the forcing function of CO2 in the atmosphere and the predictions from these models are significantly higher than have been observed/measured.
In my mind if the result of increasing CO2 (a trace gas in the atmosphere) can be anything you want (temperature increases, or decreases, or no change) the original theory is unsound, or maybe CO2 really doesn't have much of a negative effect at all on the atmosphere.
The poll questions are biased, there should be a selection for man made CO2 may have an effect on the environment, but that effect has been overblown and overestimated in order to make scientists and the green lobby money .
My favorite modeling quote: "Remember that all models are wrong; the practical question is how wrong do they have to be to not be useful." George Edward Pelham Box
In George E.P. Box and Norman R. Draper, Empirical Model-Building and Response Surfaces (1987), 74.

You sit on a toilet with your a$$, not exactly the cleanest part of your body. It is not like you are using the toilet as a pillow or a serving plate. Most are clean enough for the job that needs to be performed.

Make it a practice to support, recommend and use the establishments that can (get the job done, or provide the service you need).
Make sure you don't support those that cannot.

A good friend of mine in the USA is a breast cancer survivor. She said the same thing, she would not go through the cancer treatment (chemo and radiation) again and would rather let nature take it's course.
For those that never had cancer, personally, I'd rather let nature take it's course ( with sufficient morphine to take the pain away ) than go through the hell on earth of treatment again. Sometimes it's really not worth it.Just out of interest, have any of you guys who rely on savings ever enquired into the cost of cancer treatment. It would be interesting to know how your nest eggs measure up to whatever the figure might be.

Would you buy a car or house for a "girlfriend" in your home country? If not, I cannot for the life of me figure out why someone would do this in a foreign country.

Why does it have to be insensitive OR ignorant? Why can't it be insensitive AND ignorant.

Fried chicken feet, not something I would pay for again.

I own a CZ SP-01 Tactical here in the USA. Excellent pistol with very managable recoil. It is a very good choice and I would highly recommend it (stay away from the .22). What is the cost of a CZ SP-01 in Thailand (I am just curious, in the USA it costs about $600 USD)?

In Hawaii it is currently legal to kill and eat dogs as long as they are humanely killed. Hard to believe, but true.
-
If people want to eat dog why do you think you have the right to stop them? You seem to want to put your nose where it does not belong. If you don't want to eat dog, don't eat dog.

My mother in law tried to get a tourist VISA on her own (for a visit) and was denied. I had been married to her daughter for 15 years (or so) at that time and we live in Hawaii (USA). The next time we visited Thailand we spent a couple of days in Bangkok and I went to the US Embassy with her and we eventually got a multiple entry tourist visa.
The US Embassy basically wants some kind of assurance that the person they are granting the visa to will return home after a visit. Things such as money in the bank (no money in my case), property ownership, and family members (husband, other siblings, grandchildren, etc.) that remain in Thailand are all factors.
My mother in law was so nervous that she couldn't correctly answer how many children and grandchildren she had when asked by embassy staff (in perfect Thai). He finally looked at me and asked if she was just coming for a visit, I replied yes, and he stamped the visa approved. I don't think she would have gotten the visa if I had not been there.
I recommend researching the precise requirements for a tourist visa, make sure they get all their ducks in a row before you get there, and then visit the embassy with them when they apply for the visa. This worked for me. My MIL visited once for about a month, got homesick, and returned home. She has expressed zero desire to return, but she got to see how we live.

It can be found at most every Thai local market, I would be surprised if it wasn't sold. If you cannot find grated coconut in Thailand I suggest that you really need to get out a bit more (IMO).
-
When you get back to Bangkok try to get to Lumpini park for a couple of ours in the early morning, or late afternoon (not as hot). It is a nice place to stroll and there are some very large Malaysian water monitors (some are more than 2 meters long) that are very interesting (to me anyway).

My mother in law thought that it was outrageously expensive. Bless her heart.

I spent three days and two nights in a private hospital in Buriram (Nangrong) in June 2013. I had a private room, blood and urine labs every six hours, and an excellent Doctor (IMO). Total cost including food was less than 16,000 Baht.

Beef Ribs?
in Phuket
How about going to a local wet market (in the morning) and ask the people that sell beef if you could get some?
-
Organic food is over rated (IMO), overpriced, and studies have shown it to not be any better than non-organic food. How about buyer beware (caveat emptor) and eat at the street food stalls that serve good food which lots of Thai's frequent. Is a nanny state like Singapore really an option? Don't get me wrong, I like Singapore for a short visit but would never want to live there.

I had a stroke a few years ago at age 47 (mostly recovered now), my total cholesterol at the time was 198, but I also had borderline high blood pressure (hypertension). I would recommend you find a good doctor, get a thorough exam and ask about getting on cholesterol medicine.
Take it from someone that has been there and make sure your blood pressure and cholesterol are where they should be. There are medications available if diet and exercise are not enough. I would recommend using them if a doctor determines that this is an option for you.
Good luck.
