Time to be honest with themselves & the Thai people, a submarine would definitely be a nice to have item but in sincerity is it a NEED to have item? who is the country that would invade Thailand by sea??

Not by sea, but by air.
In an elaborate brainstorming process the navy will then decide to opt for anti-aircraft missiles launched from the only aircraft carrier. What is the ploblem?

You need two types of insurance. One is a general health insurance and if you can get a 90-day travel insurance it would probably do. Are you planning to stay on 90 days?

Second you need to Covid-insurance that specifically covers up to US 100.000 for Covid related costs. This insurance you can buy online from Thai insurance companies. If you use Google you will find a list of these companies.

Your travel insurance might cover Covid and in this case you do not need one extra insurance.

Do not forget that the insurance must cover the whole period of stay!

Hi, check out this one, the health insurance premium seems to be VERY reasonable especially for your age, plus a low premium for covid coverage in TH . I found this one advertised at TVF. It appears to be too competitive to be true. Let us know about your inquiries.

Drama! Couple of Thai dishes for 500 baht - tourism leader defends hotel

    Picture: 77kaoded

The online post of a woman who was charged 500 baht for two basic Thai dishes caused a bit of a "drama" (as it is called in the Thai language these days).

She had paid 250 baht each for kapow moo (pork with basil) and 250 baht for moo thort grathiam (pork fried with garlic) with an egg on the side.

It was at a fancy hotel on the holiday island of Koh Chang in the east of Thailand.

Much comment followed especially as the dishes are considered "everyday" fare usually available on the street for about 50 baht or less.

77kaoded asked the Trat tourist Business Association secretary what he thought.

Saksit (no surname given) said it was a five star hotel and clearly marked on the menu so customers would know.

People were entitled to voice their opinion but he stated that of course food has different prices in different locations and so long as customers knew what they had to pay then there was no problem.

He said he wanted potential tourists to understand that Koh Chang was a tourist area and would be more expensive but not all places on the island would have food as expensive as this.

People had to expect a difference between 5 and 6 star hotels and cheaper establishments, he noted.

This certainly was NOT a 5 or 6 star hotel, such ones would not have issued a hand-written slip, supposedly was a street restaurant

  4. It is very clearly defined, everyone has to know and accept that:
From the headline: ".... The law prohibits the promotion of alcoholic drinks or stimulating the thirst for drinks via discounts."
But, ... it is NOT PROHIBITED to demonstrate the use HANDGUNS in public TV broadcasting for killing people or "stimulating the lust for killing".
Well, ... one cannot prohibit everything.

  5. Unless there are cosmetic reasons to hide something and one is re-gaining its self esteem I do understand them growing a beard, but I personally think men having a psychic issue and like to compensate for a  deficit in masculinity. When one is in good psychic health I can't see any incentive to have it, it's itchy when growing, unhygienic, inconvenient, annoying and time consuming to take care for an aesthetic appearance ... and unfortunately often, beard bearers of any style look silly and laughable.
It reminds me of my former superior saying that "a  (politely) anus is always surrounded with hair".
This saying was his, I don't identify myself with his opinion, therefore no one should feel insulted by me.

    Thanks!

And yes in that case @peteralex should go back, and re-apply for this 1-year extension of stay using the embassy-statement confirming this monthly pension-income.

As his permission to stay expires on 22 May, it is recommended to do that ultimately tomorrow.

Jomtien confirmed that he could do the 1-year extension with the 400K money-in-bank method during the Amnesty, so normally should also be possible with the embassy-statement.

Well, I did the 400K money-in-bank method already on 15 May as soon as I learned about when applying for the yearly extension that the embassy letter is no longer acknowledged (at least not at Jomtien IO) and, for safety I applied for 2-months extension (for visiting my wife) which was granted (1900 Baht). The IO mentioned though that during the amnesty it wont be necessary, however, I don't ever trust this species of people, they obviously have limitless power and one has no means to appeal it successfully. UbonJoe suggested in a previous post that the "amnesty" might not be applicable for this sort of extensions. Now I have time to await the 2-month period and IO cannot kidding me.

You cannot appeal by any means of which I am aware.  The family-desk there has their schemes backed by the head of the office - same as the schemes used by the "change of visa" type desk.  For all we know, the scemes are that guy's idea - or maybe his boss's ideas.

If you could appeal to some other level, you'd likely just encounter someone higher-up in the same Multi-Level-Marketing style envelope-pyramid-scheme.  This is the core-problem.

    Thanks for commenting Jack,
I'm well aware that there is no successful means appealing, even not at The Lord. It was just a rhetoric question.
In this great country with its truly dutiful servants (vassals) and severely observing law and order, it's like caught on a ship drifting in the ocean: You're in the hands of The Lord.

<Do you have a income letter from your embassy? There are 3 embassies that no longer issue them.>

YES, I do have the letter from the German Consulate in Pattaya.

<False info. Proof of income from your embassy can still be used. Even the month she quoted was wrong. There were no changes done this year. See this police order issued in December of 2018. Clause 2.18 is for marriage and the embassy letter is mentioned at the bottom of the far right column.

Amendment to police order 138/2557 Revising clauses 2.18 and 2.22 to include options for proof of income>
I know this police order, however, what can one do,  where to go for an appeal or a complaint?
BTW, the IO was MALE with 3 stars on epaulets, supposedly a supervisor

<You could apply for a 60 day extension to visit your wife.>
    Yes, i shall apply today

I would not count on that being 100% correct. They could change their minds in 2 months or even tomorrow.

I would certainly apply for the 60 day extension if needed.

Good morning Ubonjoe  and Peter Denis,  many thanks commenting and giving me confidence not to surrender.
Today still in time before expiring, I shall apply for a 60-days extension in order to win time and shall re-apply in a next step.

I understand that you got the 12 monthly bank transfer and your application was been denied?

    No, I didn't.
I have my pension payments transferred irregularly from my German bank account into a Thai "EUR currency account" and from there, depending on EUR/Baht exchange rate, transferred to my regular TBaht saving account at the applicable TT exchange rate at this day. By this means I can reduce expensive international transfer fees and, I can control when the mentioned EUR/Baht exchange rate appears "suitable".
A REgular monthly transfer from the German Bank account to THailand bank would be TOO costly and I have to accept any miserable exchange rate.

I choose the 400.000 Baht/2 months option in Thai bank account now, since the marriage extension of stay is expiring on 22 May but before completing the 2-month rule,  I have to apply for a 60-day extension.

Thanks for the information. Now is clear. I’m thinking to changue next month my  annual extension visa (8 years already) to marriage visa and have a letter from embassy of my state pension.

    Hi,
As usual in the past I applied with the option of an Embassy letter certifying a monthly pension income of 40+ thousand Baht.
According to IO officer at Jomtien IO the option of an embassy certification letter is NO LONGER available since March 2020, only the two remaining options of 12-monthly-bank transfer or, the 400.000 Baht on bank account since 2 months at filing date of extension of stay is acknowledged.

Due to lack of 400.000 Baht in bank account for 2 months my application has been denied.

Whether it officially became mandatory or it's an arbitrariness, I don't know. I learned not to successfully discuss with IO.

I can confirm that IO will process your 60-day extension of stay application when you apply for it before your current permission to stay expires.

As mentioned higher in this thread waiting till end of July might cause your IO not accepting your subsequent application for a 1-year extension.

    Hi,
I'm in a similar situation, however, on extension of stay on basis of marriage expiring now on 22 May.
I applied as usual in the past with the option of an Embassy letter certifying a monthly pension income of 40+ thousand Baht.
According to IO officer at Jomtien IO the option of an embassy certification letter is NO LONGER available since March 2020, only the two remaining options of 12-monthly-bank transfer or, the 400.000 Baht on bank account for 2 months at filing date of extension of stay is acknowledged.
Due to lack of 400.000 Baht in bank account for 2 months my application has been denied.
Upon my wife's query the IO was pointing to a notice published at his counter and explaining to my wife that NO application for an extension of 60 days (or probably any) would be necessary since there is the covid amnesty until 31 July and, instructed to apply for a marriage extension of stay again on 15 July after completing the 2 months in bank account.
The higher ranking IO (3 stars) seemed to be competent, but nevertheless I'm suspicious of Thai bureaucracy.
Can I rely to the notices published onto counter protector shields, or, nevertheless to apply for an extension of 60 days?
Your experience in such a matter and/or  comments are appreciated.

  13. Ban the exports into the EU. Forget right and wrong as 'Money' flow is the only thing Thais listen to and if thats impacted then and only then will they change there shonky business practices.

Anybody have a list of that fruit company brands? Anybody know how to do one of those online petitions?

    Hi,

contact [email protected] for info how to do an online petition. I myself signed the petition against Thai goverment's attempt of introducing a single internet gate. CHANGE.ORG initiated, published, collecting and submitting the signatures to whom it concerened. Obviously successful, Thai government dropped the project.

  14. good point wym, a quick'n'easy at the local amphur may NOT be recognised at your home country, particularly UK/other common law countries that require an observed decree absolute where it may be necessary to involve lawyers (even for an agreed settlement) and a certified translation thereafter.

Apart from other compulsory requirements of "The International Private Law", a so-called Private Divorce will NOT be recegognized in European States, only divorces by court sentence are acknoledgeable, provided that the law is of a constitutional state, or, established according to the law of religious communities, for ex. muslim law.

It's a very complicated matter, I went through the attempt of acknoledgment, however, unsuccessfully.

  15. Peter, what did you use as your ground reference to check the potential on the green/yellow and other wires?

What equipment did you make these measurements with?

Hi Crossy, I appreciate your response.

As common practise I originally connected the white and black coloured conductors coming out from the wall to the water heater's terminals N and L, the yellow/green one to the dedicated Earth terminal. To my surprise the heater did NOT function. Since I have another water heater installed at a second shower room I checked the connection there and it revealed that the yellow/green conductor was connected to either the N or L terminal, I don't remember accurately, however, not to the dedicated earth terminal of the device. I couldn't believe that and I returned to the water heater to be connected, using a multimeter and taking measures between the yellow/green and the white resp. black conductors, both cases indicated a 220V potential, while taking measures between the WHITE and BLACK conductor indicated a Zero potential. Thus the ground reference was as well the white as the black conductor.

Upon this experience I contacted an external Thai electrician to brighten me up about the strange situation who confirmed the yellow/green conductor as the "live" conductor and he continued rendering the water heater operational by connecting the yellow/green conductor to the L terminal and the white resp. black wire to Earth resp. N terminal. (I described his comment about this previously).

The multimeter used is a commercial type with an int. resistance of 9kOhm/V in the AC range.

    1. Is there a ground connected to the breaker panel? There should be a line, rather large coming out of that and leading outside to rod that it is clamped to.

    2. If there is a ground connected, you need to inspect the connections inside the breaker panel to see if in fact the line is connected to the correct ground connection in the panel.

    3. If the ground is connected in the panel, yet you have 220 on it in the bathroom, somewhere between the panel and the bathroom, an electrician has cross connected the Line and Ground wire, poosibly in a juntion box or from an outlet box. You need to find this cross connection wink.png

    4. If you do not have a ground connected to the service breaker panel in the house, DO NOT add on until you find the cross connect between the Line and Ground wink.png

    Hallo to all OPs,

many thanks for your valuable advice and contributions.

I checked the CB box and a Ground bar is found which is supposedly connected to the said grounding rod by a heavy green conductor of outer dia. approx. 8mm; onto this ground bar are 5 black conductors (10mm2) hooked up. It can be assumed that using the standardized yellow/green instead black conductors represent the grounding network in further distributions within the home.

Within the CB box 6 white conductors (16mm2) are connected to the N bar, yellow conductors (16mm2) after CBs of the L bus. These main conductors are leading into the attic for further distribution.

It is stated that NO yellow/green conductor is found in the CB box, it can hence be suspected that in a grossly negligent manner yellow/green conductors for the 2 water heaters are joint in the attic with yellow conductors coming from the CB box and, thus becoming to 220V conductors.

I'll verify my suspicion asap and, in any case have the erroneous yellow/green conductors replaced. I am absolutely aware that one should not expect too much about technical perfection in LOS but I hope that the rest of installation complies at least to some degree with the state of art.

    I'll keep you updated.
