  1. Yes! While we’re at it, ban all alcohol as is even more toxic to the body than smoking plus causes millions of accidents and violent incidents yearly. No one should be allowed to drink anything but water. Everything else is harmful to the body.

I have a great news for u, dude, it's already banned to drive while drunk in Thailand (and probably in most countries around the world)...

About the junk food ban, I don't see the need, if u want to get fat, it's fine with me, as long as u don't fart, I will be still able to breath...:o

And to all other folks here who think it's perfectly fine to stuff my lugs with smoke coz there's already car pollution, sorry, but pollution is already enough for me, I don't need to breath yours. :D

  2. I take it then that you are not an advocate of freedom of choice, or of critical thinking skills, or of embedded cause & effect logic analysis? If the students were fully educated, capable of analytical thinking and had predictive abilities, no amount of "public example making" by smoking teachers would make the students start smoking. Your argument is only valid in a "sheep-intelligence" society ......... oh, I see where you're coming from - this IS Thailand isn't it :D

are u so old that u forgot what it is to be a teenager ..? :o

  3. It certainly worked well in Kennesaw,GA

Kennesaw has the nickname of "Gun Town, USA" due to a city ordinance passed in 1982 [sec 34-1a] that requires every head of household to maintain a firearm with ammunition. An 89% drop in the residential burglary rate soon followed enactment of the ordinance.

"Criminologist and gun-control critic Gary Kleck attributes a drop of 89% in the residential burglary rate to the law (Kleck, 1991), and Kennesaw is often cited by advocates of gun ownership as evidence that gun ownership deters crime (see, for instance, this 2004 sheet of talking points from the Gun Owners Foundation). Other criminologists dispute the 89% figure, using the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting data, and find instead a small, statistically insignificant increase in burglaries after the law was passed (McDowall, Wiersema and Loftin, 1989; McDowall, Lizotte and Wiersema, 1991)."

    Source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennesaw%2C_Georgia

the 89% is defended by a gun-control critic. It doesn't mean it's false, but as some other criminologists dispute the figure, one should be a bit careful when waving this stat...

  4. This statisctic looks a bit strange to me. Could you explain how to read the figures? For instance if we look Thai murder rates, it appears that total murders are less than murders carried out by using firearms.

After a deeper looks at the numbers on this site ( http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur_...arms-per-capita and http://www.nationmaster.com/country/th-thailand/cri-crime ), I guess some numbers are wrong...

    Thailand is #3, with a rate 6 times superior to the #4 ... :o

Many comments on this site lead to think it's not accurate, in many ways...

I'm not sure, but it seems that "20,032" is the yearly number of murder done with firearms.

That's 55 / day... Isn't that too much ? Or the Thai news are covered with bloodbath every evening ? (I'm not a news watcher, so I have personally not much idea about this)

  5. If criminals are well aware that their intended victim is most likely armed, they will not risk a confrontation. However, in a country where the government has foolishly made it illegal to own self-defense weapons, criminals know going in that they are most likely going to find defense-less victims. Thus emboldened, they take the chance.

Humm, it sounds like that thieves, instead of doing robbery 1st then shot in case of trouble would be more likely to shot 1st, then rob...

In Thailand, it could lead to a nice bloodbath, as it seems thieves really not care much about life of other people...

I think that most of the murders by handguns in the USA are in states that DO NOT allow the average citizen to carry a handgun. The higher the degree of gun control the higher the rate of murder by handgun. Look up the number of murders by race both doing the killing and being killed in the USA. It isn't the whites running around shooting the whites.

    Looking at these stats :

    http://www.statemaster.com/graph/cri_mur_w...ate-per-100-000

and the law per state here :

    http://www.statemaster.com/graph/gov_gun_l...ibited-firearms

it seems there's not such general correlation between the control degree and the death by firearm rate, in one way or another... There are just too much of examples & counter-examples.

If she can surprise him with the handbag and he loose his gun, she is an hero, if she fails everyone tells she did wrong....

heros save lifes, not "$400 (U.S.) and a digital camera"... :o

This woman did a stupid mistake in a very emotional moment.

  6. Regarding the cost of standby power, there are adverts here in the UK telling consumers that leaving 1 television on standby for a year costs approx 40 pounds a year. We have 3 tv's in our house so thats 120 pounds a year. A lot of money for something that isn't being used!!!

I'm French, so i'm going to translate this in euros, and using french price for electricity.

    £40 = ~€60

1 KWH in France = 0.1€ (it's about the same price in Thailand, I don't know the price in UK)

    60 / 0.1 = 600 KWH used over a year

    600 KWH / (365 days * 24 hours) = 0.0685 KW per hour => instant power of 68.5 W

This is _NOT_ the consumption of the standby mode, it's the consumption of a average TV (56cm) turned on !!

We got the same b*llshit served in France by all news, a couple of years ago (it allows to check that most journalists aren't able to check an info, nor do 2 divisions and 1 multiplication).

In real, a standby mode of an old TV (10 ~ 15 years old) is from 1 to 5W. 3W leads to a yearly cost of €2.6 / £1.75 .

Recent TVs (CRT & LCD) standby mode are usually between 1 and 3W, a few ones are even close of 0.1W !

so if u want to save electricity (and money), turn off the light when u leave a room, if u want to save energy (and money), walk instead of taking ur car when doing less than 600m, etc, etc...

  7. The only product which I know the price over 5 years is the bread "made fresh daily since 1982" (i don't know the brand name, it's written in Thai :o ).

It was at 22b on June 2001, and it reached 27b about 5 years later.

    That's a yearly inflation of 4.2% ...

I also remember a few hotel prices, but the prices variations can't be caused only by inflation.

If anyone remembers the prices of something from everyday life, I'd be curious to see what was its evolution on the last 5 years.

  8. Hello,

Coz it's more clear to start a new topic, I extract this from this topic http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=86514 :

The most likely destination for the budget traveller is Penang where the Thai consul general is currently awarding single entry tourist visas. These used to be valid for a stay of up to 60 days but from October 1 they are valid for a stay of 90 days. They cannot be extended.

I just did my border run yesterday, and used my last entry of my triple-entry tourist visa.

I got 60 days, and when I asked the officer if I could extend it for 30 days at immigration in Bkk, he answered yes.

I did the run with Jack Golf, and the guide was not aware of the 90 days for tourist visa, she told me it was only for non-o (and b, I forgot).

So the 90 days are only possible with tourist visa issued after Oct 1st ? Or will it put in place later this year ? Or is it a good news that's not real at last ..?

  9. They'll likely lose more travelers due to their new tax on passengers flying out of France, up to 40 Euros a shot. It's supposedly to help developing nations, which isn't a bad thing, but why force travelers to pay it is beyond me. If I want to give to charity, I want to do it on my own free will and not be forced to do it by some assinine government that decides to force me to pay for their humanitarian efforts. I for one will be boycotting France for the forseeable future due to that tax.

The tax is only 4 euros for Economic class for long distance travel (example: France -> Thailand), and only 1 euros for Intra-European flights.

The tax is of 40 euros for Business class on long distance travel (10 euros for Intra-European flights)...

Poor countries need more than punctual charity, they need long & large help. This tax should bring EUR 200 millions / year, and could raise if other rich countries join it.

  10. I don't think much about this guy... My 1st reaction to the news was "put him in jail and lose the key!".

But I thought a bit more, and I wonder if he has any survivors to his treatment, or even some good result, and what are the percentages...

But the Catpian Slackbladder's testimony is really scary about this "doc" behaviour... :o

  11. They're a few important questions which we don't know the answers...

So far, we only know a few patients die.

Were they going to die anyway soon ? Were they very weak ? Were they aware of the risks ? Did they accept them ?

    How many patients didn't die ..? None, 10, 100 ?

How many were actually cured ? or at least given a few more months to live ?

Even real doctors have patients who die, who react badly to treatment...

If you don't know all the facts, you know nothing.

  12. Gee, the government allows me to have a triple entry visa as a tourist and to ask an exstension every time the entry expires, So i can stay here a total of 9 months.

Have you done that before? I'm not sure if thats correct that you can get one month extensions on all three entrys of a tourist visa. :o

yup, it is correct : I was told this twice by the official giving me my triple entry tourist visa, and I extended 2 of these entries without trouble...

  13. Most of the CC issuers today allow you to register your card with a security function on their websites.

You can chose to receive an e-mail or a SMS whenever the amount you decide, is spent with your card.

You mean we can do that directly on the visa website ?

or I should contact my bank ?

    I just had a look there : http://www.visaeurope.com/?country=fr&ep=v_gg_return , and I didn't find anything telling about what u said.... :o

  14. I got my Visa card cancelled a couple of months after my trip to Malaysia. But there, I only used it once, to get cash from ATM...

I wonder if it was the reason they wanted to cancel it or not, coz the control organism said the reason had to be kept "secret", so even my banker didn't know what happened exactly ! :o

But I didn't use my card again after this ATM in Malaysia... (and only used it once in an ATM in my country in the previous month)

  15. "... This will take only 10 minutes as we already have the information needed.”

The 3 times I did extension in Soi Suan Phlu, I spent less than 25 min in the immigration office, and about 1 hour on road...

So save less than 15 min on a total of 1h25, it's not bad (except if we need 15 min to fill the form on Internet :D ), but nothing to hit the ass on the ground (french expression :o )...
