  1. One of the posters here, a certain N.K., has suggested that the girls uuup north are much "better" than the Bangkokians.

My own opinion is that there are great girls all over Thailand, all over Asia actually, heck, all over the world.

BUT what is the big deal with these upcountry women? NK "recomended" 18 y.o. girls as partners to someone, but is that really practical ? Do these country bumpkins really make good partners? I can't imagine much commonality - there's enough of a culture / language gap with BKK girls - let alone unworldy country girls.

So, aside from the bleedin' obvious (please please don't state the bleedin' obvious) what is the attraction of an young Thai unpcountry girl over a more worldly BKK babe ?

Would especially like to here from Khun NK.

  2. My two satang: 36 year old educated Thai woman, she's know what she's doing, she's manipulating you into a marriage / money relationship. 17 days - that is nothing. I am surprised that no one has stated the obvious, you are being a FOOL to continue with this woman. She may be lovely (though apparently not so easy on the eyes) but her methods are very very suspect. Cut your losses. Step 1: as you are a Newbie spend a full day reading posts in the Farang Pub and that will help put things in perspective. Step 2: Tell her your UK wife found out and is suing you, and you can't come back to Thailand and you can't contact her anymore. Step 3: If you really want to find someone in Thailand, do it slowly and without any ultimatums.

As Rainman says, if you're posting the problem here, you already know in your heart what the answer is (need to extricate yourslef).

NK, that's the second time you have made that comment (that I have read) I will have a stern word with you later. ;-)

  3. Hey Debaryman101 & Khemvika:

You guys are both Thai-American (I believe) but don't speak Thai ? Do you regret not learning when you were kids or are you content to get into Thai language and culture now that you are older?

What makes you interested in Thailand now, are you just exploring your roots, tired of the US or what?

Would be cool to hear from you.

  4. Not sure if this helps, but the current trend in London is "gourmet burgers". A few new chains have started up in the trendier areas.

High quality meat, quality spices, excellent toppings (like good bacon, blue cheese, exotic salads, etc) to differentiate from the fast food slop and the re-heated pub fare. The burgers are big and with a plate of very decent fries plus a drink cost around £10 (service not included).

Even if this isn't the right idea for Sukhamvit, aren't you moved to LOS!! :o

  5. Recently, a thread by ThaiLover1 on "bedding Thai girls" was shut down by the Mod as, I guess, it was becoming fairly raunchy and disrespectful. Maybe the poll was offensive?

However, promiscuity outside the Bar-Girl community is an interesting topic, despite the fact that old-timers may have already discussed it ad nauseum.

Even "The Nation" has a forum on whether premarital sex is okay, and judging by the obviously local postings there, a great deal of conservatism still exists. So the question is are "straight" Thai girls any more conservative about, in the immortal words of William Jefferson Clinton, sexual relations than their Western counter-parts. In my experience STG's are much much more conservative. :o

  6. A good theory 350. Hangovers are directly related to how dehydrated one becomes, so ice or water during anything is never a bad thing. Of course the heat dehydrates too so it has to be a net increase of water.

Also, in terms of strongest to lightest hangovers I find it's the following order:

    1) beer

    2) white wine

    3) red wine

    4) spirits

    5) whiskey

    6) malt whiskey (least hangover inducing!)

  7. Okay okay PKG don't get your knickers in a twist. I just couldn't resist taking a swipe at American beer, I had to drink some when I was a teenager and honestly, compared to good Canadian beer, it put me off. But as you say it's not about where the beer if from. The main thing is that it is cold...###### COLD. What about Thai beer don't you enjoy those in Thailand? I always found Chang to be pretty good. :o

  8. Oooh who peed in your Tom Yam Goong, Padkapow Guy?!

The Beer in Britain does not effect me differently than the beer in Thailand. Although having said that, I do find that sometimes as little as two pints will make me feel merry, against the usual 4-5 pints.

As for putting my head in the toilet, it does make the British beer afterward taste very strange, but if it's American beer it tastes exactly the same. :o

Surely you're not really defending the taste and/or strength of American beer? Or have you not left the Mid-West yet??

  9. That's odd because I saw a documentary on "Bangkok Hilton Prison" a few years ago.

I don't think it's interesting as it perpetuates the international image of Thailand as poor inhumane country. Why don't we have a documentary on Brixton Prison and show it to the Americans, and see if that boosts the UK's standing in the world.

  10. Martin & Maerim, you're too cynical, Britain is still a fantastic place. It's not all benefit fraud and Coronation Street. London is booming, even Birmingham is booming. Brits are now the ugly Americans of Europe snapping up sunny properties in France, Spain and Italy. The idea of long-weekend breaks to Thailand is popping up in the press.

The problem is, unless you have had the good fortune to end up in a well paid job (say £60K+) you have an incessant struggle to live a fairly hum-drum existence. It's a shame for the "excellent ladies" of Yorkshire, but maybe they should have moved down to the South when they were youngsters and dreamt up some PR nonsense to affort a luxury lifestyle. In any case, so much Southern money is flying up North that even those communites are experiencing rising house prices and economic growth.

My guess is that the current boom will all end in tears, but it'll start over again. Britain has it's problems (I wouldn't be here if it didn't) but on the whole it ain't going down the tubes. When I read your 1911 - 1946 quote I initially took it as, "they said in 1911 things were getting worse, see how wrong they are".

So stop being grumbling OLD CODGERS and be happy that you come from a great country and are living the Life of Reilly in sunny Thailand.

    :o:D:D

  11. Thai-Mouse (sorry can't read the Thai) thanks for the genuine story. I don't think Britain is doomed in five years time, but I share your frustration at the way things are done and the mad wage slavery that has become the norm.

It is crazy that everyone in working like dogs, to get the mortgage, pay the mortgage, to retire in the sun. Nothing wrong with working - it's the LIKE DOGS that I have a problem with. Communting like dogs. Overtiming like dogs.

Your plan of living frugally and saving for a better life in Thailand shows your determination to not be trapped in the dog system. Good for you.

One thing I am curious about is why the local authority would not house you if you were in such dire straits. My guess is that you are in fact earning good money (should be if you are working 98 hour weeks) and simply are not satiisfied with what it will buy you in the UK.

We shouldn't blame the Easern European migrants, they are coming to Britain for a better quality of life (whether that's through living in the UK or earning in the UK and going back East). It strikes me that this is EXACTLY the same as what many of the Brits living in Thailand are doing. Okay, it's the other way round, Brits import money into Thailand, but at the end of the day they/we are migrants in search of a better quality of life.

  12. I thought you were taking the piss (ie. joking) until I see you really have posted your resume. In that case, let me answer seriously.

There is a land management property on Samui that develops many of the condos, and some of the hotel resorts. They are a secretive organisation but my contacts there have let it be known that they are looking for someone with finance skills and knowledge of GAAP. Pay is around 800K month - tax free. Please apply in person, you will find the entrance to their vast under-island secret office complex behind the big waterfall - if you don't find it keep looking as it is definitely there.

  13. Dak - "a commitment to the marriage" WHOA! Let me reduce the volume of those alarm bells ringing. Commitment is one thing I never doubt, and I imagine it to be the same for most Farang-Thai couples.

Maybe others will have another opinion, but Thai women are trained by their culture to submit to male authority - especially in familiy matters. This is odd, maybe she has picked up too much American feminist ideals at Texas A&M.

And if anything a Thai family will respect a man who is working his ass off for the future - wherever he needs to be based. I'd put your clear thinking cap on before you make any big decisions.
