  1. Doesn't he know that Thais don't like Chinese people?

Lol, what is this? 1950? Thai people love Sino-Thai women because of their beautiful skin. Older thai people may remember the Chinese immigrants and some negativity may stem from then because of their lack of manners (my mother always had endless things to say about them, "don't tuck your shirt in too tight, it makes you look Chinese", "don't pick your nose, only Chinese do that", etc), but much of that negativity has been lost through the assimilation of the Sino-Thai and the generosity of their elite. Any negativity you hear today tends to come from the lower class people, in particular from Isaan who don't have much exposure to them or are just jealous at their success.

  2. This kind of thing doesn't only target farangs, Thai's also fall victim to this, they just don't carry the self-righteous farang attitude with them (which only leads to more problems in thailand). If it happens to you, just put on a smile, keep your cool, if they ask for too much, bargain it down a little, 200 baht is reasonably cheap in Bangkok, but outside Central Thai, you can usually get away with 50-100

I have never seen this "self-righteuos farang attitude" you talk about, pray tell me what goes on?

They have meters in the taxis in Bangkok now, far easier.

200 Baht, unless your traveling right accross the city, I bet they are queueing up to get you in their cab.

Not referring to the taxi, but to the police. If I understand the post correctly, he had to pay the police 200 baht for confronting someone. Many farangs would have been too self-righteous and argued it as they believe the police has no right to demand money like that (I'd agree they're right, but arguing it won't get you anywhere here).

  3. Anyone know a good restaurant that serves Maine lobster? I've been to Seafood market but it seems like a farang oriented place with such prices (mud crab was close to 2k/kg). A decent sized lobster there costed 6000 baht!

So I'm sure there are cheaper restaurants that serve it, around 2000-3000 would be nice, anyone know of any?

  5. The article says that the truck driver ran a RED light. The truck driver also ran away because he knows he was wrong.

As I had established earlier, it's very likely that both vehicles went through a red light, there is a reasonable time frame in which both drivers can be aware they would collide, which driver was capable of avoiding the collision once they could have become aware of it? The motorcycle driver. Who is likely to suffer most in such an accident, the motorcycle driver. The motorcycle driver clearly had the duty of care.

Once the motorcycle crossed the path of the truck, there is nothing the truck can do. If the motorcycle driver had looked for oncoming traffic like any experienced driver would, there would not have been an accident.

You can throw around blame everywhere, the truck driver for running a red, the state for not teaching motorcycle drivers to take care, the parents for allowing the same, but at the end of the same, the motorcycle drivers took the direct actions which led to their deaths, unfortunate as it was more than likely out of inexperience than anything else.

Green has never meant its safe to blindly run an intersection, not in Thailand, not anywhere.

  6. Witnesses told the Gazette that the truck, traveling on the bypass road southbound, ran a red light as westbound traffic pulled out of Yaowarat Road in the direction of Kathu.

    I find this questionable.

a.) Motorcycles normally pull out of the intersection a few seconds before it turns green.

b.) Only two motorcycles were hit, they were obviously not paying attention to where they were driving as other motorists avoided it.

What I believe happened is that the truck was heading to the intersection avoiding breaking down the slope in order to reach a green light. The two motorcycles ignored the oncoming vehicle and entered the intersection. The truck may have just gone through a red-light, but only just, to have hit any traffic in the intersection, the traffic would have also had to speed off into the intersection while the light was still red.

If you've ever driven in thailand you'll find it an all too common occurrence to see children cutting you off in a dangerous way (for them). I'm not saying that's the case here, but I wouldn't be so quick to judge the truck driver.

  7. I'm looking for a place to sell 7kg of silver (in 1kg engelhard bricks) in BKK but all of the bullion dealers only want to deal in gold. Anyone have any recommendations on dealers of silver? Also what in regards to taxes here, I understand that silver is taxable in Thailand, so will the dealers offer much less to cover for this tax? Any experiences would be helpful.
