  1. We used to have it on carabaothai.com but were 'warned off' using some of our old material when we came back after rethinking the site. There are people who only want an official site, though the band are fine with us.

  2. I've been to a few weddings and at most of them the envelope has been deposited at the entrance, where the souvenir is also given.

Following other people, the envelope I've used has been the one that the invitation came in. This should have your name on it already so your generosity can be noted. I can't say that I've noticed people using red envelopes though.

  3. Carabao's new album has a song about Jatujak Market and claims it as the largest market in the world. Actually, the Thai lyrics say the 'largest weekend market' (with an English backing just saying 'largest market') and I've found that on a few websites too.

According to the Guiness records website, the honour of largest open air market goes to the San Jose flea market: 120 acres, over 6000 stallholders. For Jatujak it would seem to be around 35 acres, 15,000 stalls.

So, how to define 'the largest market in the world' and is it JJ?

  4. When I was a kid Kenny Dalglish (footballer, Liverpool) was my hero. To this day, he remains a man (not a football player/manager) I have great respect for.

After the Hillsborough tragedy in 1989 he attended most (if not all) of the funerals and the pressure and stress that he put himself under was a direct cause of his resignation some time later.

At the time the S*n tabloid had a front page story headlined "The Truth" which was filled with lies about the behaviour of the Liverpool fans on that day. This led to a boycott of the paper on Merseyside and the then-editor phoned Kenny to ask what he could do about this. Kenny told him to put a headline as big as the first on the front page saying "We Lied" and admit what they had done. McKenzie declined and to this day the S*n is looking for ways to undo the damage.

I really don't have any heroes any more but some others I respect

Also as a kid, I was impressed by the Nelson Mandela story at a time when he ws still imprisoned. He's subsequently always appeared to me to be an extremely genuine man with a lot of dignity.

From Thailand, I've become a bit of a collector on books about Pridi Panomyong (one of Sulak Sivarak's heroes?) who seems to have been a remarkable man. Modern Thailand could have turned out quite differently if he hadn't been forced out.

  5. On a salary of 240,000/month this guy aint gonna be looking at 400THB/month townhouses!!

Hmm, must have missed a couple of messages last time I read through the thread. :o

Some very nice upper-end moobans going up in the area, on Srinakharin and the Namdaeng and Bangplee areas. Check those out.

  6. If you want a bit more space you should go in and look at some of the moobans in the sois off Teparuk. You should be able to find townhouses that rent for about 3,000-4,000 baht a month.

  7. Apartments near/on soi Teparuk : There are quite a few in Theparak area, but then again, I have never seen any farang living there (I've been to a few as some of my brother's staff live there).

Quite a lot of farang in the area, in fact. Including my good self :o

    Rinrada too, I would guess?

  8. Which part of Teparuk are you on?

There are some decent pubs e.g. Baan Khon Thai at the Srinakharin intersection, Baan Chaliang at the Paknam end of Srinakharin. Wall-to-wall factory girls at the weekends if that's your cup of tea. As bradda88 says there are loads of little dives with working girls. Be very careful though.

If you're hanging around the Seacon area, well that's Bangkok, not Samut Prakan. The tail of the Bangkok traffic jams is to be found at Teparuk, especially during term time.

  9. I've used www.totalregistrations.com in the past. I've found them to be very reliable. They're more expensive than they used to be though.

Is there any reason for using a UK-based company? I always do things through namecheap.com these days.

  10. One of their favourite pulls on the highways is for only using the right lane. If they see you in the right lane they'll wave you in whether you were just overtaking or not.

I was pulled over in Chantaburi last week and the cop didn't even make any pretence. The first words were "ao ngai" - the wife was thoroughly amused. Asked him what for and he came up with the right hand lane thing even though I'd gone back to the left before I'd spotted him. I had 70 baht in the top pocket and that was enough. I think he would have taken just 50.

  11. I tried to pay my True internet bill online but the bill reference has 13 digits and the Kasikorn system comes up with a message saying it accepts up to 12 digits. I continued with my customer account no. which is 12 but in the end I didn't hit the confirm button as there was only one set of reference details.

Anyone else using this and having the same problem?

  12. I'm pretty sure they are using the bridge to connect with the Outer Ring Road.

The ring road will come down from BangNa-Trat across Tepharak and Srinakharin, then cross Sukhumvit at the Erawan Museum/ Benz factory to the bridge. Since early December, they've been doing clearance work which you can't miss if you opposite the giant 3-headed elephant of the Erawan Museum, but there has also been demolition going on down the route in the sois.

I could be wrong but then it would seem that they'll have a bridge for a non-existent Industrial Ring Road plus an Outer Ring Road with no bridge to cross the river?

  13. The name change has taken place twice. First, on June 24 1939 under the Pibulsongkram government. The name reverted back to Siam in 1945. Finally, another Pibulsongkram government brought back the name Thailand in 1949.

There isn't a simple answer to the question on Thailand's stance in WW2 since you not only have the official Thai government position but also the Seri Thai resistance movement which was led by a number of very prominent Thais who were in government both before and after this period.

Not very useful but this brief article gives an idea of the divisions within the Thai ruling elite:My Webpage

  14. There is a need for some kind of standard. That doesn't necessarily mean it needs to be prescribed as a fixed standard without the possibility of variation.

It's quite easy to accept that infinitives can be split without drawing the conclusion that anything that's good enough for communication is acceptable language use.

Most standard forms of English, including those such as Indian and Singaporean, actually have little significant variation grammatically. But speakers do not only have one fixed version of the language. Depending on situation etc. everybody switches between more casual, perhaps local, forms to a more standard form. Local varieties of English will keep emerging but that shouldn't mean the disappearance of a 'standard English' which will be necessary for international communication.

  15. I'm not being paranoid either. UK citizens who are merely suspected of being involved in football related violence abroad can be banned from travelling overseas whilst big matches are taking place. Even if they haven't been convicted, just on police suspicion they can have their passports taken off of them. This has happened to many people who have been caught up in trouble, arrested and subsequently released without charge in several European countries.

So we go from paedophiles, to people merely suspected of football related violence, to who knows where?

I would honestly doubt that many people are unfairly banned. One reason they are released without charge is that other countries want them out as quickly as possible. It's actually not that hard to steer clear of football violence if you want to. There are a lot of hangers-on who might just be around the edges but if they are identified and banned that's their own fault.

From the hooligans to the paedophiles, if there is a serious problem then serious measures should be used to stop them damaging the lives of other people.

  16. Robsom says House Sparrows are resident all over Thailand so not a rare sighting except in the South.

Thanks for that. I'm a few years out-of-date and this thread has revived a bit of interest. I haven't noticed House Sparrows in my area (Samut Prakan) but will look more carefully. They are still worthy of mention in the BCST Bulletin. I found a reference from about a year ago:

House Sparrows were said to be common and breeding in villages in the three-crop (irrigated) rice area east of Bung Boraphet, on 20 February

  17. Not exactly the same situation but certainly in that area:

    FAN HACKS OFF TESTICLES

A welsh rugby fan cut off his testicles after Wales' Six Nations win over England at the week-end.

Geoff Huish was so convinced England would beat the Welsh he told mates: "If Wales win I'll cut my balls off."

Friends thought the 26-year-old was joking. But after Wales' 11-9 victory in Cardiff on Saturday, he went home and carried out his promise.

He then walked the 200m back to the social club in Caerphilly to show everyone what he had done.

Staff dialled 999 and put his testicles in a pint glass packed with ice until help arrived.

One onlooker said: "He came back with his testicles in a bag.

"He lifted up his kilt and there was blood everywhere. It was terrible. That's when he collapsed."

Mr Huish is said to be seriously ill in hospital.

Police revealed he has a history of mental problems.

  18. Don't blame your wife or feel bad. Others have the same problem (here)

(Your real name wouldn't be "Clivey" would it?  :o )

    good luck  :D

No, I'm not Clivey - I'd already seen that. I feel a bit of a saddo having the same problem as a Clivey who no-one wants to talk to. I can't reset anything using "Menu" because I can't see the menu.

Thanks for the suggestion pandit35, that sounds promising.
