  1. See the thing about Thailand is it needs to be Thailand, I think the Thai people cater enough to foreign needs and with open arms.

Honestly it helps both sides out, it brings the Thai people money and a new experience for foreigners.

Learn to adapt to the culture and suck it up if your having a bad day. Thai people as a whole will always be Thai people there is no changing that.

  2. Why oh why do you foreign folks come to Thailand for? They have prices and they put it on the merchadise for you to see. Why complain? Go to a different store and buy? Or sleep? Why complain how Thais are ripping you off? You foreigners are the reason Thailand is like it is anyways. You have created a tourism monster and the thai people want to capitalize off that while your in town, why not? Your breathing their air, drinking their waters, attending their functions, buying from their businesses, dating and marring or fukking their women. So why can't they charge alittle tax for foreigners? Not to mention its NOT every single place that does this.

If you don't like it.. Guess what, Cambodia is right across the boarder.

  3. This was when I was 20 I am now just turned 28. Was living in the village with mom, my second trip to Thailand. Didn't have any friends because I could speak hardly anything at the time. So my cousin, a friend of hers had a younger nephew who had been staying in Thailand from America like I was.

So he came over, he was 17 at the time, but we had a lot in common, and both acted the same, likes same music, both made music ( what's the chance right ? )

We kicked it a couple times. Then we went to the bar just up the street from my moms. And we drinking or whatever telling story's. cracking jokes shits like that, just happy we can speak English and understand each other topic wise.

Then a group of "government" officials came in had some drinks but where eyeing us like (annoyed) some thai/farangs where in there drinking. Anyways.. Dude i was with could speak and understand a whole lot better than me, and was kinda going back and forth with the table (dumb it's me and him) and like 7 grown thai people at the other...

Read your story makes me thinking about that many young drunk farangs who talk and act loudly, with no respect for the local people/uses. Then down the road in the dark you guys gets paranoid, and lastly that the guys who weren't any aggressive while in the car saw the blade and thought you wanna harm/attack them, IMO you have totally messed up with it.

Hell yea we was loud lol, just like they are loud when they drink, what American Thai people are louder drunks because we are from America?

Another thing, like I said they pull up and it's basically "your getting a ride with us, no way out of it" what where we supposed to do.

We aren't the white man who goes in to a PATTAYA pub full of Thais and thinks they are king. This was a local VERY SMALL bar in my village which you would be lucky to see more than 4-5 people there at a time. This paticular night was different though.

We showed respect, but they where tossing the insults and giving us the annoyed looks first. We left the bar with out incident.

We get to free style rapping over thai karaoke songs and the older Thais and muttering "speak thai" like insulting... But whatever nothing happened.

We are drunk, my mind isnt clear, he's like let's go to the club in Aran, I'm like alright "we just walk its not that far" well on a bike going like 70mph down this straight road to get to my moms took about 3-4 minutes, so I figured it would take 10 walking LOL! Nope.

We get to walking. It's pitch black. We are right on the border with Cambodia, bout 3 minutes go by.. He's like "you know they call this such and such road right" (hinting that people get killed on this road/ kidnapped) ... I'm like nope. But see a long think stick, picked it up, broke it in half and gave him the other.

I'm like "I see anyone coming at us I'm swinging LoL!" He's laughing too. Like fuc_k it. We still walking.

Truck comes past us, keeps going. We don't acknowledge it we just walk. That butch turnt around.. "we like hmmmm, might have to get down" ... It pulls up.

It's the government officials from Aran/my village. But only the guy from my village and two people inside.

I supposed their asking "where you going, you shouldn't be walking on this road at night, well give you a ride" ... We look at each other well dam_n what else CAN we do, we out in the middle of no where. So we are like "alright just get us to the road leading to the city and we out your hair." (Cause they he was telling the guy I'm with we need to get a ride)

... Sooooo we in the back, a little dam_n paranoid. And we are discussing we hope this ain't a set up, these guys where just talking shit in the bar. And my guy, grabbed the wheat knife that was in the back (basically he's like "I'm not going out like that") I'm like F*** ! (In my head, shit is about to get real) .. But at the same time I'm like fuc_k it, we didn't WANT the ride.

We get close to the road to the city, they pull over, my guy gives me 100baht to give to them for the ride, I'm like alright cool (so its not like they did us a complete favor) ... Well it gets fuc_king odd when we jump out the back.

I'm thinking (give driver 100 baht, say thanks and we all on our way) ... Hell no. For some reason, they didn't want the money, and all 3 got out the truck. And saw that my friend had the Wheat Knife in his hand in case and they surrounded us.

(The driver and him are speaking thai back and forth) (my mom tells me the next day, my friend was telling them "I'll cut you up if you try to fuc_k with me/us") one of the guy grabbed the knife from the back and threw it in the field.

Now my friend is hella helpless now backing up saying "kor tot kor tot!" Driver grabs him, I push the driver off him, he throws a drunk in' tony jaa kick at me and misses. I look back going to tell dude to run, but he's already half way up the street looking at me like "run!" So I start running! Catch up with him and pass him in flip flops LoL!

These Thai guys jump in the car and chase us through the city! As I look back. (I'm like dam_n it, these guys are serious) so I'm like "F*** that" both run to nearest building with people in it. Trying to hide, but at the same time if they try to kill us there's people around to see (hopefully good peolple) ...

So they end up getting to us (no shit) yelling chasing us around tables and chairs like its (Tom and Jerry).. Smack like friend in the head, (while he's trying to defuse it with "kor tot" "it's cool") ... But people are watching so dude calls the cops .....

Cops come. Tell us (farangs) to get in the back of the truck. They drive us to there station. We both in the back of the truck some what releaved, laughing, what to say to cops.

My friend overhears them there the thin glass talking .. He's like "aye , there talking about taking us to a park, hang us and claim its suicide" but I'm like "fuc_k it guess I'm a die tonight" (half serious / half thinking he's just trying to BS me) ..

Anyways he tells the story. Cops think we BS, but let us go. We leave. (This guy asks me if ima walk home... -_- HELL NO IM NOT WALKIN HOME LOL") ...

    Slept that there place.

Later months later, read that the cops hanging trouble makers in fields and claim its suicide was real and did happen I'm Thailand.

Felt lucky. And thought maybe he wasn't BS'n me. Maybe we cheated death twice that night.

Maybe we thought it was more than what it was.

Fun times though lol. Wasn't too scared when it was going down but thought alittle about it after.

  5. I may be moving to Thailand end 2012, early mid 2013.

I'm 27 and have no college education at the moment, I was browsing craigslist for jobs in Bangkok, of course the Teaching jobs come up often.

Would I absolutly need a 4 Year Bachelors Degree to teach, or could I pass with just a TESOL/TEFL certificate?

Any other ideas if the teaching idea didn't go through? Any decent career options for foreigners out in Thailand that would'nt require me to do too much school before I could move?

    Thanks alot for the replies.

  6. This is what you do. Since she wants to run into walls and say you hit her.

Next time she bangs on that door, open your door real real fast, grab her by the neck, pull her in the room, slam the door, throw her on the bed, cover her mouth and black both of her eyes, look deep into her eyes, don't say anything, stand up, walk over her semi limp body calmly, and close the door behind you, and hang out at the bars untill 11pm.

Bet she won't come around anymore.

  7. Home? No America is where I'm from. But Thailand is home too, since I have family, kid and mom has a house/business over there.

    Old? I'm 26, I'm getting there.

No I don't miss the women, im to poor to afford the BKK stunners like you folks everynight, I ment Thailand as a whole.

The smell I'm talkin about, it's just that Humid Hot Musty air that gives it it's own Smell. You know the one when you first get off the airplane and you know your back in Thailand.

Anyways, not sure why I posted this thread, maybe to feel like I could live through all of you, since most are in Thailand at the moment!

  8. Been a year now since I've been home in Thailand.

Hasn't came into mind to much, but lately I've been thinking about it so much. The smell, the Thai lakorn, the people, food, simplicity, ... Bangkok most of all. Not sure what it is.

America just seems so boring. I need my fix

  9. 1. What level am I at (speaking Thai)

I would say very basic .. Enough to have basic conversation, buy food, ask for things ect. Understand more than I can speak

Another thing: I notice is I understand Thai and speak it alot better when I'm drunk, when I went back last year I was have straight conversations about my life to strangers at the wedding I attended.

    2. Read or write

    Not at all.

    3. How long have I been learning

Well, I never tried to learn it, this was something I needed to do to get by in Thailand while living there, I've been exposed majorly to the language for 3 years total (by that I mean, you could live anywhere but leave the country not knowing anything about it or the language, unless YOU Want to learn), but actually tried to really learn and remember words and teach myself (talk with mom (in Thai not in English) & the ex wife) PROBALLY less than 2 month total.

    4. How do I learn?

    Talk and listen.

I did have a phrase book those do nothing, due to the tones, so unless you talk with a local you'll never know if your saying it right.

    5. Other langauges I speak.

    Just English.

  10. What I hate about these threads is...... we never get any follow up.

    How things are on arrival.

How things are a few months down the line.

How things are a year or two later.

It would be nice if the OP could provide some follow up, if only as a change from the usual fan fare followed by silence.

Well I forgot all about this thread! wow. This was almost 9 months ago!

Things where odd on arrival! I haven't seen my ex wife in 3 years, and in front of her waiting was my little kid. I didn't really know how to react honestly, of course I was excited, very nervous and very scared.

I won't go into detail, but It was a good trip in all. My child is beautiful and very smart. Her mom does a great job raising her. I was very humbled on how I figured I could just show up after 3 years and expect my kid to just automatically know who I was and want to be around me and love me. But It wasn't like that at all. She wouldn't come to me or my mom, or show to much love like she would to her mom's side of the family (which is ok, that's my fault). It was great, but very hard on me (I'm sure on them as well), as I was/am still confused on what I should do in my life.

All in all, the wedding was big and great, my last few days there I caught some kind of flu that caused me to lose 10 pounds in days and had me going through hot and cold spells. Other than that the village hasn't changed at all, nor the people in it. They all remembered me by my first name, even after all these years from being away! (I was pretty much the only half thai/farang they ever met) so it feels great for most of the people there to want to share drinks and offer beers to me and talk to me after so long of absents. I felt my ex wifes family would look down on me, since I haven't been taking care of my responsibility, but surprisingly they still treated me like family and cracked jokes with me like nothing happened.

It feels good for people I've never met in my life at the wedding telling me I could be a superstar in bangkok or I could be anything I wanted to be, I don't hear that to much in America but it feels to for Thai's to thing my life is so perfect and great when it is really not, it somewhat makes me feel better about myself, because I never seem to man up or make the right decisions in life.

It was definalty a great experience once again. But a big eye opener to see my kid and how she is doing.

The simple life is truly a great thing. All in All a great time and can't wait to go back someday.

That's me, my ex wifes, sisters kid, my kid in the green, and mother in law at the pre wedding.

  11. mai dtawng rong hai - Your final consonant in 'dtawng' sounds like an 'n' but it should be an 'ng'.

yahk dai = you are pronouncing the vowel in 'yahk' slightly wrong, it is a little too open, and needs to be more closed. The way you do it now it sounds more like 'yaek dai' i.e. "it can be separated/divided" and not "yaak dai" (I want it). Work on pronouncing (and hearing) the difference between these two vowel sounds.

sue bahn song bai = sounds strange without the classifier (two houses = bahn song lahng). Not sure if your 'bai' is intended as a classifier or if it is the word 'bpai' as in go...?

mae bpen sabai der = "bpen sabai" is not proper Thai. There is no 'is' verb before 'sabai'. You can fit in a 'gaw' there instead.

The 'der' particle at the end is not Thai but Isaan/Lao. Thais who listen may well think it is comical as they associate Lao with hillbilly comics. Think of a white redneck rapping with a strong countryside Southern drawl.

"bpen klong dee" = you are not supposed to have a 'bpen' there. And the way you pronounce the tone on 'dee' at the end also sounds dialectal (or it may be an influence from your English, not sure).

(Also, unless the clipping on the bass is deliberate, you need to fix the gain levels.)

Yea about that part, I think the mistake is I'm trying to word Thai words like I would word them in English.

"YAHK DAI ( I WANT ) , SUE BAHN (TO BUY A HOUSE), SONG BAI (BAI = CLASSIFIER) (TWO HOUSES/ TWO OF THEM) ... I THINK "BAI" MIGHT BE A WRONG CLASSIFIER FOR HOUSES THOUGH?

    Ok nice.

Yea with "Thong" I say it right in real speech, but I was rapping and was rushing words together, thats why it sounded "Thon"

With "yahk" I'm hanging some of the tone so I can stay on beat with the music, which is hard to do, cause me hanging words will probally change the whole meaning in a fluent speakers ears.

"Mae bpen sabai" I never knew that, I feel if I said that to my mom right now she wouldn't correct me on anything, to me it sounds more complete, "MOM "IS/BE" FEELING GOOD? "Gaw" is more of a "UM" right?

"DER" I added that, because that is a end word my family practices, all though we are not issan/lao people, when they say "DER" to me it sounds more as a "Command" or maybe "Adding more emphasis to the sentence"

The bass, eh, I threw the song together in 10 minutes, It was made just to practice my Thai and see if I word Thai right. Didn't even take the song serious, just a 10 minute job.

But thanks for the help, it helps a lot and you seem to know a lot!

  13. I woke up a bit sick, decided to experiment and try to start writing more songs in Thai. I've only been learning for 5 years now, but haven't even been close to using it for those whole 5 years. I'm discouraged, I see a lot of you folks, picking up the language real fast even to the point your beginning to read and write it. Sometimes I feel bad for being half Thai and still not being able to speak that well.

Could I get a little opinion please?

These are the lyrics as I wrote them.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsiM13Oy5Fw

pom kit thor ang, way lah bai nai/ (i think to myself, where the time go) <---- worded right?

tum mai chee wit thong mee bun hah on the thaiside/ (why is there always problems with life on the thai side)

I don't understand why, mai thong rong hai/ (i dont understand why, you dont have to cry)

kit dee, maa wah, chee wit dit fie/ (think good thoughts, even if your life won't start) <------ My girlfriend told me that "DIT FIE" is like the "Fire won't start", I thought it translated into being "Stuck?" or broken? I know broken is "SEE-A" hmm.?

yahk dai, sue bahn, song bai/ (i want, to buy a house, two of them)

hai ugn ma, ma bpen sabai der/ (give money to mom, mom will feel so good)

pom lou, ngan yaak, just chase your dreams/ (i know, work hard, just chase your dreams) <---- I think I said 'YAAK' alittle wrong

mung gaw lou wah pleng goo bpen klong dee/ (you know my music is the shit)

klong boomb, pom my kuray yan mun/ (fake shit, I never have supported that) <--------- "YAN" i never used this word untill I wrote the verse, probally said it wrong, and "MUN" I know means "IT" but I thought It can also mean "THAT?" = NUN/MUN

took kon, mai chorp pleng pom, chung mun/ (everyone don't like my music, so be it) "CHUNG MUN" I'm alittle confused about this word, I always heard my Family say it and too me it sounds like "WHO CARES" or "I DON'T GIVE A dam_n" right?

powak kao, took kon, they my enemies/ (All of yall, everyone, they my enemies)

why in your right mind are you next to me <---- english..

  14. The same reason as the Thai elite.

It has been almost three years. She understands a few words of English. I think a bit less than when I met her.

    She is not university educated.

I don't teach her English because we don't need it to communicate. My Thai is OK. I can talk to her mother on the phone.

When we go out with her Thai girlfriends I join in the conversation.

When we go out with my Falang men friends she sits there like a bump on a log.

The guys say, “nice looking woman too bad she doesn't speak English.”

When I first came to Thailand in the 1960's as a soldier we taught the Thai people how to speak English, built schools and hospitals and funded middle class people to build infrastructure projects like deep water ports, oil storage and refineries and communications projects. This made the elite edgy and they asked us to leave in 1975. The Thai government gave other reasons but I didn't believe them. I think they were upset at the affluent middle class we were creating.

Had they left us here at the rate we were building Thailand would have eclipsed Korea and Singapore by 1980. For those who don't know the US built the industrial East coast including airports and deep water port facilities. Thailand was among other things the gas station for the Vietnam war.

Thailand invited the American presence because of concerns about the stability of the Monarchy as a result of the problems in Laos during the 1950's and 1960's and North Vietnam incursions in border areas. There was also a communist presence in Phetchabun for a number of years. The Indochinese communist party advocated an overthrow of the Lao monarchy.

So to summarize, if I had only taught my GF one word a day for the past three years and spoke English to her on a daily basis she would by now speak fairly well. But I didn't, on purpose. She does not read, write or speak any English. She is Dependent on me for money, friendship and her future.

    LOL @ this post.

First of . Why does she need YOU to learn English or anything @ all?

If she wants to and has the heart to, she can & will learn English with or without YOU, unless she is satisfied to be cooped up in the house allday watching Dootv.tv to remind her how much she misses home

My aunt came over from Thailand just only last year, and speaks MORE English, Understands MORE English, makes MORE money, and has a brand new car, and is able to get around town MORE, than her Thai husband who has been here in America for 25+ years.

IF your ladie wants it bad enough, she can have independece. Trust me no women, color, size, shape doesn't need a man to tell them what they can and can't learn lol. It's 2010 come on..

But sounds like your ladie is satisfied being a throphy, who grabs you beers at the snap of a finger and stares are her feet when younger more attractive males come along.

    That's cool too.

  15. Sorry but most of you guys are just sick. Not even my worst enemy I wish a life in a Thai Jail and it can happend to EVERY Farang in Thailand if its nose is not appreciated by someone.

Just have an accident (ohh yeah, most of u never drink and drive LOL) or piss off your barlady or a Bib and YOU are faster in as u can say not guilty....we decide then here in the Forum about YOU.

If the idiot did the lab and wants to produce and sale Meth give him 5-10 years, thats almost a life in a Thaiprison I guess. There are other ppl around in this country with much more

    to hide as just 53g

I dont mean he doesnt deserve a harsh penalty but DEATH or a Lifetime in a Thaiprison nobody deserves...NOBODY

I wish EVERY known Drugdealer get what he deserves and also the ppl which take the bribes of him for closing eyes.

What if those drugs turned your kid (if you had a kid) into a junkie?

Or what if you kid was kidnapped and used as a sex slave?

What if you little boy is being raped?

What if your wife got murdered in a robbery gone wrong?

Or got hit by a drunk driver and killed?

It's different when it hit you close to home.

I bet you would wish him death in a New York minute

  16. Don't let it get you down.

You don't need a billion hours to learn, it is possible to teach yourself or work with other people at it. All these people in these videos have to be in there 30's at the oldest, I believe the one kid is around 15.

So all your excuses throw them out the window, and just speak and learn it. I am not fluent either or close, but these guys are defiantly motivation. IT IS POSSIBLE, THIS IS PROOF. These are all young people too.

This guy is a great teacher and understands tones very good.

This black guy, probably has the worst pronunciation or accent out of all of the people in the videos, but he is defiantly a linguist, not sure how many months he was learning it. He also can write and understand words if you look more up on him. BUT, I give him credit, because he can speak/read/write about 20-30 languages, and has never traveled out of OHIO. Amazing.

HOPE THIS MOTIVATES YOU. AND NOT GIVE UP.
