  1. Old topic on a new thread ........ you may find something to like at El Toro on Loi Crough, Art Cafe advertiises some Mexican, and then there is even a taco stand on 4th floor Pantip plaza...... As well as the usual burrito battles fought between the big 3 already mentioned. My vote goes to Diablos for Burritos, Salsa kitchen for enchiladas and Miguels if you don't like spices.

Is it time for the best burger battle to flare up?

I agree with that one as far as a burgers !! The mex food thread keeps getting reborn reposted so time for the "better burgers of chiang mai" post!!

  2. Not too sure about that, never been to "Jewish place" and never ordered Hummus/pita at Sahara.

I can stand by what i ate though three times, the bacon, cheese burger with grill onions w/ home cut fat fries also a thousand island side come with it, i ask for mayo and cut raw onions too. Now i want to eat!!

    Location/directions please...I'm starving :w00t:

Neimenhamin rd.(sp) directly across the street from the college bar Warm Up! If you go at night, (which I did first time at 10:30 p.m. on a Friday) you will see many ,many beautiful girls walking down street going to Warm Up.

Once the Thai people discover this tasty treat it will get very interesting. There is a good Thai , western menu and a middle east? menu. Not sure about middle east menu but good photos .Try the bacon cheese burger for it can do no wrong it is just good!! The bacon ,cheese burger has been bery, bery good to me!!

    .

  3. The very best bacon, cheese burger (w/grilled onions) and home cut fries in town!! Crispy bacon, cheese on a home made type bun w/ burger ground in house from fillet with a pile of fresh cut fries for 129.00 baht !!Thank you Thai Visa again! This is what forums are all about for food hounds finding a tasty value !!One line in a thread few months ago quietly quipped ..."try Sahara for great burger" ... It is upscale, new, clean surroundings .One other item on menu was the marinated beef which comes out on a metal skewer ,this was good and very impressive .You can be on a budget and impress you gals at this place! Nothing over 200 baht except the steak i think @ 250baht.

    enjoy!!

  4. She was a pretty girl. But she should be more aware. Couple of young kids swimming and Thai girls in those little granny kinda costumes with the skirts attached. Its pretty clueless imo. Balconies overlooking the pool. I wasnt in the pool area, just looked over my balcony...and whether i did the right thing or not, decided to call reception and let them know. No idea if anyone went to her, she was gone when i looked out some time later. I personally thought it was inappropriate. Dont mean to come over as being a prude. I think its the wrong setting to be so liberal.

    answer your question,

yes you are being a prude.

  5. it's a bit of fun Winnie but it's generally (ish) true - Thai's are incredibly 'practical' when it comes to errrrr 'love' - no one really believes that that incredibly beautiful young 20 something with that over weight 60s farang would 'love' him if she had a choice?

Yes, but from what I have seen, by the time they are 30 and starting to look run down, they often have formed a genuine affection for the old guy.

By the time they are 30 and run down?? Is this a joke? What type of Thai girl do you mean exactly?

"Run down at 30".... maybe for this type of Thai girl it would be a genuine affection for the 30-50,000 a month forked over and not much more.

  6. Couldn`t the man say he is a Brit, Aussie, American or something? This may increase his chances.

    :cheesy:

That was a good one. :P

i dont like his chances of picking up a thai girl . most thais say up front that they are not interested in indian guys .or arab . sorry but that is life. he is better looking at a bride from india, james

"chances of picking up a Thai girl" ... sure the Thai girls are some of the the most discreminating of people ....

absolutely rediculous.... we all need to laugh so keep your funnies coming!

  7. There is also the problem of mental health. Deteriorating mental health, like for example alzheimers, also means one loses the ability to speak a foreign language. For non native English speakers that will be a problem, as they can't communicate in English any more and will be totaly depended on people who can take care of them and talk with them in their own language.

I'm afraid the number of Thais speaking decent French for example is very limited and some people will be better off in their home country.

This is not last stop for the internationally pennyless ,aged, failing farangs! .This is Thailand which is for Thai people, we are visitors and when there is no funds and you are unable to take care of yourself.... it is time to go home to your own country since your vacation is over.

  8. I think that 'gourmet' is not the right word. Unique recipes that are influenced by Mexican cuisine and what ingredients are fresh and in season is how I would put it - tasty food that does not try to be totally authentic.

it would seem you just discribe the road map to create "gourmet" food items,

a unigue twist using freah in season ingredients is certainly the first step on the road to creating gourmet food.

  9. [

Both varieties of ribs? Went there last night and guess what the Hickory smoked were gone and apparent not making anymore, according to my waiter. Like the quote stated 'each to his own' but the burrito I order was half filled, and covered with so much sour cream that it was all I could taste :bah:. Guess I'm one of those used to having a meaty almost over loaded burritos. However I am not saying that I won't go back there, I'm going to give it another chance incase of an 'off-day' and ordering something different.

Very strange story for us to read. We ate there Sunday had the combo plate ,(WOW!! )and original ribs which were out of this world good. We have eaten there 7-8 times (3 times in a large group ) , the sour cream, the salsa and the chopped tomotoes have always been in three separate little bowls on the same plate .The pork burritoe on the combo plate was filled with meat !

What exact burritoe plate ? .

  10. I agree, though, the whole place is a dump and needs a total revamp.

I have always preferred KSK to Airport Plaza, but I had to walk through the whole place the other day and was shocked at how it had deteriorated since I was there last. On top of that, they have turned down the air-con to the tepid point and that is always a sign of a business that is on its way out. :(

The building is a dump ,owner has been trying to sell for too much $, it is only worth the land it sits on .

  11. Salsa Kitchen is certainly good but I would not refer to it as "Mexican" food at all.

Well then is it German food? perhaps English,no wait Iranian ? It is gourmet Mexican!

A good thing. If you have ever dined in Mexico most levels of Mex. food there are horrible for non Mexicans !

Is the salsa kitchen good food?

It is gourmet foos so it confuses some .

  12. I ate there two years ago. Extremely unremarkable and bland so I never went back. This is coming from someone who has eaten dozens of times in the American Southwest. Guess I need to try it again.

only dozens of times? did you eat the dozens of times at the same place? How about thousands of times, then you would have standing .

bland? salsa has a Nam prik noom , so hard to understand your bland statement.

  13. I like the Salsa Kitchen too on occasion but It barely even reminds one of Mexican food.

I agree that it is not authentic, but it is good for what it is and that is good enough sometimes - especially in Thailand. John uses ingredients that are fresh and in season and improvises a lot to good effect.

Miguel's is authentic California style Mexican food and many people think that it is one of the best in Thailand (look at the many Mexican food threads). Some people do not like it, but that applies to virtually every foreign restaurant in Thailand that I can think of.

one is gourmet ,one is "taco bell" ,while diablos is really to small ,hot and noisy to bother with for the very limited ,pricey menu for a beany buritto. Salsa is where you go to eat unique, gourmet cuisine ..plus it is the only one of the three with AC!!

  14. what is it?

Its a Fiber drink? it's sold everywhere - by the box. I was just looking for a good cheap supply - I buy 10 boxes at a time (15 in a box) so I use 2 boxes a month

If I understand you correctly, you are paying 44.50 Baht per dose? You can buy the Mucilin in large boxes of 50 I believe for about 4 Baht per dose. That is a heck of a lot cheaper!

Mucillin is 3 grams of fiber per11 grams mass processed with artificial sweetner in it ,it is inferior to Agiolax which is in pellets so you can take anywhere then chase with water.

the fiber OP is refering too is top of the line and not the same but is very expensive here and there are no deals.pricewise.

  15. what is it?

Its a Fiber drink? it's sold everywhere - by the box. I was just looking for a good cheap supply - I buy 10 boxes at a time (15 in a box) so I use 2 boxes a month

It is good but a very bad deal.. .-Agiolax - the best product money wise and effective @ 105 baht -7-10 days worth using everyday .A yellow plastic bottle with screw top. look around though some places sell it for 150-160b .

  16. I like the Salsa Kitchen too on occasion but It barely even reminds one of Mexican food. As far as consistency goes, to this day they have still failed to learn how to make a tortilla. That's consistancy I guess As far as the ribs go, people seem to like them but I just never got this "falling off the bone" thing that people seem to go for. Where I grew up ribs should be a bit chewy.

I must admit I'm no expert on Mexican food I've only ever eaten it in Thailand, England & Singapore :ermm:

but authentic or not, the Salsa Kitchen food always tastes good, has huge portions and is very reasonably priced as well as that the wife and kids no connoisseurs of Mexican food always enjoy eating there.

The Salsa kitchen is true gourmet this is why many TV folks get confused. If you like Taco bell back in the U.S.A. then Migels is the place. If you like a big fat over stuffed burrito with a lot of rice and beans , a very costly price” poor mans” burrito the other place mentioned is for you.I honestly have problems mentioning these other two places in the same paragraph as Salsa kitchen. We have taken several groups to eat there and everybody both Thai and Farang leave raving, some in disbelief that such one of a kind place exist!

We have not been here for months but thanks TV you reminded us ..... the only place in town for a exquisite Mexican Cuisine .

  17. I am so very sure her Mom and Dad and for that matter anybody on God's earth gives a care about what you think !

Congratulations on bashing one of Thai Visa's most polite, informative and useful posters. :whistling:

You left out his senseless, insensitive drivel that prompt me to post

" It's kind of amazing how clueless people can be about what is in their food they eat."

A young girl on vacation ,eats dinner and dies . Your TV comrade post how clueless she is , how clueless everybody is in their knowledge of food ingredients.

Many people do not have the leisurely time to Google, organise , compose, then post their new found drivel on TV to boost their image .

What for you is 'polite, informative and useful " in this case was clearly some of the most insensitive, self serving garbage for the norm reading here on TV.

    Mr. U,

Perhaps to be a bit more objective you need to concentrate more on the post content , not which one of your TV buddies is posting it .

  19. Tell you there is more? You started in a bar in the morning .So yes there is much more than being in a bar at 8:00am ,who would even think of am bar run ?

Everyone retired is in a bar?

Life, retired or not, is what you make of it.

First step ... step out of your A.M. bar mentality !!

  20. It is what you make it.

If you enjoy walking around and having a cup of coffee or a beer with friends it is good.

If you enjoy reading internet games and TV it is good.

If you enjoy the opportunity to go on a holiday or little trip any time it is good.

Only you can make it happen or not happen.

What is sad is when a person has to depend on a job to not only bring home the pay check but to make his life good.:(

Bingo! Jayjay nailed it. Outside interests beside the job is important LONG before retirement age. There aren't enough hours in the day if you have other interests too numerous to mention. But, maybe I'm just jaded because I have TOO MANY INTERESTS and I don't live in Thailand full time. I'm just sad because I'm running out of time.

lets look at a positive here on TV .. imagine when a person has a job that brings home the pay check and at the same time makes his life and other's life good too!!

some people have work that pays out big not only in cash but they love what they do .!!

  21. Finally, after months and years of crap news stories, the Chiang Mai Mail closes.

I don't know why the crap news, but I'm glad to see it go.

Maybe it will give somebody with some news background a chance in Chiang Mai. :)

I think most us of would agree with you.

As i said, it's not very good at news reporting. Think of the recent food poisoning tragedy. They seem to concentrate on covering the so called hi so events and parties

I am sure they are nice people, as Richard said, but looking at it positively I hope this may prove an opportunity for some innovator to give the expat community the reliable news source that is so much needed here.

Citylife articles are excellent but news is not something that can be covered by a monthly paper of course. An organisation like Citylfe could possibly see an opportunity here for a weekly paper for news. I certainly hope so. Citylife is professional and they know their business.

Do you even read your own crap

You fault them for a event that happened after they closed.

    What innovator

The English speaking people in Chiang Mai are not into spending the money or time it would take to put out a paper that would not support it's self. You talk about City Life being a quality paper. You say they are profesional and know there business.

Did it not strike you as funny that these Quality Professional knowing people only put out a free monthly edition.

It did in fact lack a lot of good articles it how ever was constrained by money. This might and probably will come as a shock to you but it takes money to report all the news and look behind the front page grabbing headlines and dig out the truth. Even then would the average cheap Charlie pay for the news paper? I doubt it. Even citylife witch is free dose not get all it's papers picked up. I have been in places with last months edition still there.

This was all covered on a previous thread and the general feeling was Chiang Mai did not want a hard copy news paper.:(

I'll ignore the opening flame about my reading crap. But perhaps in the circumstances, and as you have raised it, you will permit me to call your writing crap. Look at the bold items above.

They have not closed , there is still an online edition.

Their track record is on hi so events and parties more than real news. Look over the last six months and see the coverage.

Can't see why you are knocking Citylife. I was not aware "they were constrained by money" and I suspect you actually don't know their finances either. I don't know much about them byut the consensus is that they have many good articles. Many business models in the media rely on advertising and not magazine price. It make good business sense to publish free copies which generate wide circulation and advertising revenue.

I will miss their food reviews ,i learned of a several eateries from this paper so for me it was very new worthy ! thanks . "City Strife" is a good rag too, so why all the negative stuff all the time ?

  22. a lot of products are made with seaweed like MSG, carrageenan and alginate. It might have just been a small ingredient in a larger dish.

MSG is a flavor enhancer originally made from fermented Kombu

Alginates are commonly used for texture and stabilization. Often made from brown kelp.

Carrageenan is a used as a thickener in many soups

There are a lot of other seaweed ingredients in common foods.

It's kind of amazing how clueless people can be about what is in their food they eat.

A young beautiful twenty three year old girl comes here on her vacation and dies from some type of toxic food she and her friends injested in Chiang Mai

Somehow you find the need to google food thickners etc. and procede to lecture TV readers about : " amazing how clueless people can be about what is in the foods they eat"

I am so very sure her Mom and Dad and for that matter anybody on God's earth gives a care about what you think !

  23. For value, try Marco's

They are not sponsors and don't go in for self-promotion

This is a thread about typical american food from looking at the photos ,the punpun about same as dukes.

This is not about fine dining!

It is silly to mix the Marco level in with american food eateries.

    .

,Now must try the pun pun ,looks like down home usa food, the real deal, huge servings , plus great pricing it seems!

see how it compare it to the Dukes .

thank you TV for the great tips, keep them coming !!
