  1. Be aware that the Wiki page has been spammed many times over the years.

David Smyth maintains that it is derived from the Thai bastardisation of 'farangsayt' and that's good enough for me.

All of the faux linguistic arguments to the contrary are merely feeble efforts at knob waving.

To add to a otherwise boring topic which has been rehashed time and time again, found some very similar words in other languages which mean the same thing, the Hindi/Urdu reference is quite intriguing considering the Thailand/local area connection with India as regards the formation of buddism/hindi etc, therefore the root may not be french as has been suggested, but from India...as is the derogatory connatation of the "Thai" word Farang....

Farangi or firang is a term for foreigners in Persian, possibly linked to the Franks.

The word in Arabic (faranji or ferenji) is similar and the word Farangi also appears in Amharic,Urdu and Hindi in reference to foreigners.

It can have a derogatory connotation, and was used by people in British India to refer to the "white foreigners who travel".

    :jap:

HAHA cool. This reminds of the Star Trek race Ferengi :D Maybe it came from that? ;)

  2. KRS1 said: You're right, Thinkpads cost 3 times as much, are more than twice as heavy, have keyboards that feel funny, run hot, utilize slower 32 bit windows, have less ram, lethargic video capabilities, smaller hard drives, and have horrible sound quality.

    --------

Great, if you are happy with your Acer, and most would agree that it is a reasonably good computer brand.

Your statements regarding ThinkPad laptops are not based on real facts however.

    • X220, as well as the T420s are the lightest in theirs class
    • Thinkpad keyboards are considered the best available keyboards on any laptop.
    • Speakers are at least as good as the average, but a ThinkPad is a business computer and not a dedicated multi-media machine.
    • They use the same Intel processors as anyone else, and come in i3, i5 and i7 versions. Need speed? Get a i7 ThinkPad.
    • They use the same sized hard disks as anyone else including the option of SSD drives. Need 500 GB? Available!
    • They come with as much RAM as you like, and run cooler than most laptops.
    • They have Windows 7 Professional 64 bit installed.
    • They use the same video systems as anyone else, either Intel integrated or switchable Nvidia Optimus.
    • They are not 3 times as expensive, but you get what you pay for.
Don't take my word for it of course. Google for reviews on ThinkPad or go the the Lenovo web site, download PDF spec. sheets and compare them to your Acer.
Now, where they really stand out is in build quality. They come with magnesium and carbon frames, are military spec. tested and certified, have a spill proof keyboard, withstand drops to the floor, and generally hold up better than anything else.
Again, search Youtube for "ThinkPad torture test", and have a look at what they do to them and they still keep working.
While I wish you all the best with your Acer, I would never consider anything else other than a ThinkPad for my mobile computer needs.

I totally agree with you! Had Acers before, but always went back quickly to Thinkpads because of huge differences in quality of components, service(!), drivers etc. etc.

Have been sticking with them ever since.

Getting back to the OP and veering away from any, in my opinion, NO possible comparison between Acers and Thinkpads :D I think I saw some shops in Pantip plaza recently, however buying one custom-to-order is cheaper in the US. Try get one from there.

  3. bb.

re ... anyone know of a place that can do that?

try this place 100 yards past number 1 bar in soi 1 of f loi kroh road

    good luck ... dave2

That guy fixed some of my shoes (soles) and did a good job. Can not comment on making shoes from scrap.

  4. Same in Chiang Mai, still connection errors on thaivisa/forum or news.bbc.co.uk and various other sites.

Can get here on forum indirectly.

Using TOR now to get around these weird things.

Called customer support and they are going to call me back.....not.

  5. ... under 50, have money, do not need to work (especially in Thailand), are not married nor have a child with a Thai ... Any policy that would prevent (my) unlimited stay in Thailand is just plain retarded Thai style decision making without thinking ... Maybe the policy has been thought out and decided upon quite deliberately.

If you have so much money that you never need to work again under 50, you can get an visa based on an investment of 10 million baht. You can also form a Thai company to do some modest business and employ yourself. I don't think the restrictions apply to genuine tourists obtaining tourist visas from their home countries.

Am in same situation, under 50 don't really have to work, especially in Thailand. I will not invest 10m THB here, are you nuts! better to invest that in the "west" and get a better ROI/ safer investment.

    Oh well, I don't care anymore since I am leaving soon after 2 1/2 years. :D :D

  6. It is free in Singapore as I have recieved 2 tourist visa's there in the last year. Ignore the old sign on the wall there that displays vusa costing 50$sing for tourist. That said the ladies that work there can be less than helpfull, especially if you have 2 or more consecutive visa's. Dropoff in the am-pickup next day in the pm

So, if they would refuse a double entry TR then you only get a single one or none?

    Thanks.

  7. We use REAL mayo, sold in 1 liter plastic bags at Makro/Tesco etc.

This one has the lowest amount of suger, 3.8% which is more to my western liking.

Most of the other have 28% sugar !!!! blink.gifsick.gif

    Try it.

  8. Why would you want a copy of an OS that you will soon loose support for and 7 is far, far superior ?

As I have posted before the safest way to ensure your copy is genuine is to buy a cheap copy. Install it. Download Windows Genuine Advantage and run it. This will tell you that your copy is fake and simply click on the " resolve now " button and pay MS. You get a product key via email and a DVD sent from Singapore. Easy.

I has a friend pay 8000 baht for Vista Ultimate that they told him was 100% genuine and it wasn't. Lesson learned ;)

    + 100 thumbs up :P
