Im also interested in this.
I have been freelance in the UK for the past 5 years - and am at the stage when i have too much work for me to do;
I did look into setting up a limited company but looks a bit like a headache with the 4 local employees needed.
I have a Thai Girlfriend so was thinking id do it as a joint venture between the two of us;
So my question (much the same as above)
If I am a director and she is - how many extra staff (minimum) are needed to kick things off
Also does it matter what there positions are (ie can i get round it by employing a part time cleaner, part time pa, part time what ever - then one full time programmer?)
Also i wouldn't be doing any work in thailand only UK, US (west basically) - so how would that work for tax / vat purposes?
Thanks for the help

I'l repeat the advice above, Makro! Makro has a very good selection of herbs and spices, whole and ground.
Yep makro is on the list also - just realised there is one pretty close by, so will be making a trip during the week!
Little india Id also check because it sounds a really interesting place
-
Its almost that time of the month again - so will be trying as many out as possible in the hunt!
actually another thing i struggled with is herbs and spices - all i could find in tesco, big c was oregano, steak seasoning.
I'm told little india (or whatever its called) is a good place to try?

Believe rental contract is currently acceptable by Hull for issue of Non-O visa, but who knows what the rules could be next year.
hopefully it stays that way once mine runs out in december!
-
Ok so the changes don't seem much different than before (for my circumstance anyway).
I am on an 'o' visa as visiting friends and family (technically both the same person (girlfriend, her family)).
With the change I guess next year all I need to is show the rental contract for where we are staying for the year with my name on it?

Any entry you make be it by land or air will give 90 days as long as the Visa is still valid.
Perfect, just what i wanted to hear!

Hey Everyone,
Ok so I'm now approaching my first visa run (i have a 1 year multi entry non-imigrant 'o' visa).
I was thinking I could just book a flight to vietnam for the weekend and get a 3 month stamp when passing back through immigration at bangkok airport - is that true?
Also i may have some work coming up in the middle east - which would last around 2 months (doha, uae, syria, iraq, eqypt, kuwait...) would the same as above apply? could i just get a 3 month stamp on my way thought customs at bangkok?
final question - has anyone been to Iraq (erbil) - never been, obviously not to sure on safety being english...
Thanks in advance

Hmm - in my suitcase .
Good Job! - but I'm guessing you run the risk of getting stopped at customs and having it confiscated?
Hmmm, I'm thinking who might want to come and visit me first and bring substantial amounts of cheese
-
The potatoes actually mash up very well - just add some butter and milk
.... and cheese!
(I bring Lake District Extra mature in from UK - arroy mak mak!).
I have been considering that actually - How are you shipping it accros?
-
Thanks! I'd never heard of food land, will give it a go.
Gah I thought cheese would be killer

Hey so have finally moved to bangkok!!!! - man it was years planning but made it!
Anyway although I eat a huge mix of different cuisine and cook alot, headed to Big C got most the stuff i need but soon came to realise I'm missing a few of the usual basics bits I'd get in ever shop in the UK
If you could point me in the right direction to get any of the following (im guessing maybe a market?) or tell me if I need to scrub these off my list
1) The humble potato, I did find some in Big C - the the quality was shocking, all where sprouting (im guessing because there imported?)... any good for mashing, baking
2) Cheeeeeeese!!!!! can't believe the cost - do you know anywhere reasonable for a extra mature cheddar and a stilton?
3) Onions, again i did see some in Big C but really low quality again
4) Mixed peppers - seemed pretty pricey, maybe i can get somewhere cheaper?
5) Herbs, Spices - I'm guessing this wont be a prob at all over here. However Big C was really limited
Any help would be handy - im guessing a pointer to a good market (I'm in sathon)
Cheers

Hey,
I want to transfer 22,000THB into thailand (condo rent)/
I get paid in £ into a UK bank account.
I've had a look at various places and all seem a rip off (ie getting charged £20 processing fee, and a shit rate of 45.00 to the £, when the spot rate is currently 47.65)
Can any one recomend the best way of sending money over?
I was wondering if sending it via a uk paypal to a thai account would work, no idea tho
Cheers

Hey can anyone recommend a good shipping company for shipping to Bangkok from London or Kent to Bangkok?
I've sorted the airshipping already, but the rest (around 16 boxes of non-essentials) I would rather send by land/sea
Cheers

Great thanks for all the help.
I'll get her to check with thai customs also to be double sure.
Another quick question for when i decide to ship my things.... I have a lot of 12" vinyl - im wondering if those a stuck in a container ship in hot conditions, they may warp or at the worst melt.
has anyone had any experience shipping vinyl via ship?
-
That sounds great.
Well my girlfriend is a Thai national, so non imigrant visa will not apply for her. The items are used, and there is only one of each type of electrical item!!!
Good news then thanks

Hmm. My Girlfriend is thai, and has recently returned to bangkok after spending around about a year in the uk.
Most of her stuff im sending in a container (clothes, books, cds.....)
The most important is the computer £3k Mac pro we brought in june. We will send this with one of the big couriers ups / fedex / dhl / parcel force..... this will cost a lot £300 but someone else is paying for shipping so not to concerned about that.
I'm wondering if there is import tax; would it be the same as the cost of the product? if so might as well just buy a new one in thai.
thanks for all the help

Hey,
I should be moving to thailand pretty soon and have a question re shipping.
Ok so I have a mac pro and monitor that i will need almost imediatly on my arrival so will be shipping that with an express courier which would be around £300 (expensive but im not paying), it should arrive in around 3 days.
Anyway my question is when it arrives in thai would there be import tax to pay? Its not new, and its a personal item ie i did not sell it to someone in thai from uk then ship. I know if shipping to jamaica no import tax would be incurred as its classed as moving an item back home - is this the same for thailand?
Also for the rest of mine and my girlfriends things could someone recomend a shipping company to ship to bkk - its not too important how long this would take, I'm thinking a couple of months is about right?
Cheers

excellent i didnt think i could get that visa.
would i be able to do it at the consulate in london? or any consulate for that matter
-
Hey Guys,
Stumbled on this forum after lots of searching for visa info - but no idea whats my best option, would really appreciate some pointers.
Ok so I'm a UK citizen and wish to go to thailand ideally for around a year. I've no problem with leaving the country every now and then, but obviously the least i need to do this the better.
My reason for going to thai is I've been working like a dog since 16, and now I'm in a position for some much deserved time out.
I won't need to work whilst in thai as I get reqular payments from projects I have setup in the uk over the last few years. At the most perhaps id be sending the odd email here and there.
Looking in the long term tho, I would eventually be wanting to setup a business in thailand, but thats a long way off - and i would prob return to the uk first before setting anything up - however I would probably be doing some research into that whilst im there.
I would be staying with my girlfriend (thai) so wouldn't have to worry about accommodation for the time im there.
All advice you can give is greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Hey to add to this, does anyone know anywhere that offers a practice space in bangkok?
I've just moved here an am yet ship my decks, mixer... But would prob ship my records or at least some over first, my condo being pretty small I doubt I'd get away with banging out tunes every hour of the day. Or alternativly if anyone wants to hookup for a mix when they arrive that would also be cool (I don't know too many folk here at the moment so that would be cool!)
Back on topic tho, your best bet is to get the equipment and lock yourself your room for a week and practice!
And when your in club, don't just listen to the music... Listen to how its mixed, and how the music progresses and the effects that gives on the crowd.
