And another entry into the long, long list of ridiculous Thai excuses.
> "Yes, I pulled a plastic bag over the deceased victim's head, but I didn't tighten it."
> "I didn't kill the fish. I merely took it out of the water, upon which it died by itself."
> "The horrific traffic accident that I caused was not due to me having inferior driving skills but because of brake failure."
> "We didn't stage a coup d'etat because we inherently loathe civilian government, but because we must eradicate widespread corruption and prevent overcharging for lottery tickets"
> "I didn't accumulate my luxury wristwatch collection through graft and corruption, but merely borrowed it from a close friend who has since passed on."
> "I didn't kill the protected black panther. My cook did it and I was hungry."
> "It's alright to appoint a convicted heroin dealer party secretary-general and deputy minister, because the sentence was not passed by a foreign court, thus has no legal bearing in Thailand."

In my opinion, the only "shocking decision" has been to admit a convicted heroin dealer into the party in the first place, even making him secretary-general and giving him a deputy minister.

For a government that is always oh soooo anxious about Thailand's good image and reputation in the eyes of the world, they surely DO unwittingly shoot themselves in the foot unusually often.

This is earth-shattering news that should make global headlines most urgently! BBC, CNN, ABC, AFP, DW et al... please pick up the cue.

Please forgive my question, general, but may I ask how many among these 19 arrested people were actual boat ownesr or high-level fishing company executives? Or did the dragnet of yours only yield boat skippers and migrant worker crews as usual? You know... small fry or by-catch, as it's called in that particular industry.

long-standing problem of expensive lottery tickets.
"Long-standing" is an understatement. Wasn't it one of the very first issues Prayuth PROMISED - nay, guaranteed! - to tackle after having staged his coup d'etat in May 2014? That was almost 8 years ago! Obviously, NOTHING has been tackled. No surprise here.

While Thailand has never charged an entry fee before, many other nations have. Bhutan, for instance, charges most foreigners US$65, while Japan, Malaysia, the US, and many European nations each impose the fee in different ways.
Yes, yes. But... some very significant details have been left out in that story... as always when the Thai government is trying to justify yet another foreigner fleecing scheme that it intends to implement:
Most of the countries mentioned charge their respective entry fees to short-term visitors (i.e. tourists!) EXCLUSIVELY. Long-term stayers are EXCLUDED. In other words: they make a clear distinction between visitor and expat. Unlike Thailand.
in the case of Bhutan, the $65 fee is included in the compulsory tourism package every short-term visitor is obliged to book.
And as far as the U.S. are concerned: I have never (ever!) paid an "entry" fee to be admitted into the country. There is a fee for the so-called ESTA certificate, but I consider that part of the visa cost and each certificate remains valid for a full 2 years anyway.

The usual ludicrous excuse by criminals who clearly had a very nefarious reason for killing the two cats -- quick profit. If the tigers had really killed a few of their cows, they should have reported that to the wildlife service so appropriate action could be taken.
A protected species is PROTECTED, no matter what the circumstances are.
Book them, convict them, put them behind bars for a long, long time. Only uncompromising law enforcement will serve as a deterrent to other would-be poachers and hopefully help to cut down on this disgusting trade.
Even more importantly, investigators should try get to the bottom of this. There surely are masterminds behind this. Any my hunch is that some very interesting family names are potentially going to emerge if this investigation can be accomplished successfully.

POLICE INSPECTOR
I am so sorry, but I have been ordered to investigate you for IUU fishing today.
IUU FISHING OPERATOR (a.k.a. "capitalist" or "mafia")
That's perfectly alright. Don't forget to come back next week to collect your monthly brown envelope.
POLICE INSPECTOR
Will do. Oh, and don't worry about the inconvenience. Everything will be back to normal once the hype has died down.
IUU FISHING OPERATOR
I know, I know. I guess it's just our turn for "7 deadly days" this time.

Exactly.
Soon enough their home will be beleaguered by hordes of "long lost friends" who desperately want to re-establish contact in addition to scores of likewise "long lost" family members Wanna can't even remember she had.

How about a bill overseeing governmental ethics and standards? Or would that be too much to ask?

The last time Thailand was invaded (by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1942) the government surrendered after a coupe of days before actually JOINING the enemy.
Then again, in the pursuing decades there were several border skirmishes with Laos and Cambodia - all of which the Thai military lost. Not that they would admit to it.
Ironically, Thai history books paint a very different picture, with the Thai military stumbling from glorious victory to glorious victory.
Yet in reality the armed forces are only good at oppressing and intimidating the local population. Quite similar to Myanmar's military, really.

According to the Layer Chickens Association, the price of chicken eggs increased by 5-6 baht for each tray of 30 eggs on Monday due to higher costs for feed and veterinary treatments. Manote Chuthapthim, president of the association, said farmers could no longer maintain the same egg prices as before due to increased expenditures. The prices, however, are likely to fall during annual vegetarian festivities and semester breaks.
And why exactly is that? Because veterinarians are on vacation during vegetarian festivities and semester breaks? And why would egg prices FALL during vegetarian festivities when egg consumption surely soars?

What's the excuse here. Thai pork exports are currently banned due to swine fever. There should be an oversupply in the domestic market, hence prices should be FALLING. Why is no action taken against this sort of profiteering?
Just asking questions...

pig virus - swine fever...
is that connected to those 6 infected "dirty farang" who recently eloped from quarantine in Koh Chang and are now feared to spread disease across the country, as reported in the below linked article?
Or am I being carried away by my own sarcastic attitude once again?
