  1. Gents,

We've been successfully growing thyme, basil, tarragon, rosemary and mint on our rooftop/balcony. Now willing to expand (and we're total newbies in gardening).

Can please somebody experienced point which of the following herbs can be easily grown in Phuket climate? We use soil + drip irrigation (can engage hydroponics later):

    Dill
    lemon thyme
    artichoke
    Italian basil
    Flat leaf Parsley
    Curl parsley
    fennel
    sage
    bay leaf
    celery
    curry leaf
    shiso
    kale
    radish
    spinach
Another question: which fertilizer is appropriate for this type of gardening and how often?
Thanks a lot for your advice!
  2. Thanks so much for info about Music Matter! Will give it a go tonight (if missy permits, hehe)

    Andreww

I have attended a couple of them in Phuket. No fees, just roam around. They had seating at the last one held at Central. It was called the Saxophone summit I think...over 3 nights. Had some pretty good internat players.

    A place you might visit.....

Every Wednesday. Many visiting and resident jazz players simply come and play. No entry fee, but u should support them by buying drinks. Food is available around the corner. Suggest you either go about 9pm and have some refreshments and wait or go at about 11pm when they start. No known closing time.

The place is called Music Matter. Owner/jazz pianist is Jeffrey Sevilla.

Its located in a little soi near Robinsons in Phuket Town.

    Will try giving u directions....

Going North from the T junction at Robinson's.

Go past the first soi on the left. Pass a series of little souvenir shops on the left. At the 4 way junction facing you...turn left (its one way in the opposite direction) into the soi. MM is 2 shops on the left. Seating is mostly on the street.

Jeffrey has held an annual jazz evening at the premises. Quite enjoyable.

  3. Folks,

Recently (last 2 years or so) I've been digging through "digital crates" in search of truly amazing Thai music from 60-70 era, and I keep discovering gems, like couple examples below:

My luk-thung/thai-funk playlist is like 10 hours long already, but I just can't get enough of this grass.

I know it's a slim chance, but has anyone heard such music performed live anywhere in Phuket or Thailand in general? I would make a trip anywhere just to see such performance.

    Thanks!

  4. Okay, could not make it yesterday, the white party is all over the island, traffic is horrible.

Went today, fantastic service, all took 5 minutes or so! And free of charge.

Michelle authorized my signature on the stat decl as a lawyer (there's a huge list of people who can do authorizations).

Having said that, she is still NOT officially in the HC position, i.e. she can't authorize stat declarations to confirm income. So keep following the news and see when new government approves her in this position. It'll make everyone's life easier, no need to go to BKK anymore.

  5. Folks,

Today I applied for my marriage-based non-immi O visa in Phuket office, and the following documents were requested in addition to the list I was given by a farang volunteer 2 months ago (thaivisa list is incomplete too):

    1) Child's birth certificate. However, you dont have to mention your child anywhere else, which means if you dont bring your child along to the immigration office, they won't bother about the certificate. English version was accepted after my wife's frown.

    2) Witness' house book. Moreover, one farang officer mentioned that witness could not be my or wife's relative, but Thai officer said it would be okay... anyway, we brought our masseur as a witness and had to drive back to Bangtao to grab her house book.

    3) Copy of my ATM card... that was super weird request as the card does not even have my name on it. My income was proven by stat. decl. from AU embassy + Oz bank statements, but thai officer requested my wife's account statement too, but this requirement again was waived after my she stepped in.

    4) Copy of our real estate agent's passport.. That's in addition to condo house book + confirmation from the agency that we rent there + rental agreement.

All that seemed like a clumsy bribetaking attempt, but as we strongly oppose such culture, the issue was promptly escalated to the main officer, and she somewhat stopped the first guy from requesting more nonsense papers from us.

As we were sitting there, my wife spotted a thai lady trying to offer a 1000 baht note to an officer to "help her with papers", but officer noted my wife's attention and refused the money, "not now" he said.

So, heads up, everyone. A farang officer said "each of them [thai officers] has different requirements", which I think means they expected to be bribed, even if all necessary documentation is in place and you're 100% eligible for requested visa type.

  6. Hello,

I'm about to apply for my first 1yr extension for non-immi O, and the list of documents required states:

Copy house book/contract with owner ID card copy

Does it mean that in case we're renting (i.e. not living in wife's family house, where house book is registered), we do NOT need to provide house book but instead need to get apartment owner's ID card? What if owner is farang? What if contract is made with agency?

    Thanks for help in advance.

  7. Transferwise does not support THB (yet). Between Australia - Hong Kong - Thailand we usually use OzForex or HiFX. There're plenty of other forex-based traders in various countries, compare here for example:

    http://www.fxcompared.com/

Rates are better than any bank would offer you (especially, Australian banks.. greedy bastards. Just as PayPal), and fees are negligent, and do not depend on the amount you transfer (can be waived for larger transfers though). Establishing an account with a trader takes a day or two (they will check your identity and such), and any transfer is a 2-step process: you transfer money to FX company's account (usually local, maybe even in your bank), and they finalize transfer to your THB account 2-3 days later.

Make sure you get rates directly from the transfer company of your choice, as these comparison websites usually list BEST rates available, i.e. best rate over a 24h period and for larger transfer volumes. Average customer transferring only $5-15k at a time is unlikely to get such advertised rate, but still, as I said earlier, you'll save money comparing to any bank transfer.

I dunno which FX operator is the best for US/UK markets, maybe someone else can advise.

  8. So, new authorities did a good job on letting everybody know what land is considered public and what land is considered private. Today we even saw something that looks like a beach shower under construction! Already tops my expectations..

We really enjoyed Surin today morning, as once all massage/restaurant tables had been removed there is plenty of shade became available for children to play and for parents to relax. Ocean waves are already doing a good job on levelling sand banks and beach line.

Now, what course of action should members of public (like us) take in case sunbeds and tables are back to the beach land and encroach shady areas? Wifey mentioned some phone number like 1111, is it a real one? Anyone heard/seen any announcements from the new government?

  9. Sorry, but my wifey (who's super-picky when it comes to massage, food and some other things wink.png, expressed strong disapproval towards blind people stuff (sounds cruel, I know...)

Really, try Thalang-Tesco so you can compare too. It's maybe the most non-farang Tesco on the island, and I have never seen a single farang (besides myself) in that particular parlour. We switched to our local magical lady however, as she's next door and does wonders. She fixed my friend's neck problem (who's a yoga instructor btw) that my friend wasn't even aware of.

  10. Thalang Tesco ground floor on the right handside as you enter.

And in Surin-Bangtao there's a magic lady that can disassemble your body and put it back together within 2 hours, very painful, but she's a real master, most likely will fix any lasting problems in 2-3 sessions.

pm for a phone number, need to book in advance.

  11. we used to bake our own rye bread in Australia, as it is close to impossible (and very expensive) to have good fresh rye sourdough even in Sydney.

In Phuket there is no need anymore. We used to buy dark (not really rye) bread from Festival and Wine Connection. Now there's some organic shop opened opposite Wine Connection @ CherngTalay, and they offer frozen or freshly baked very tasty bread, incl. rye, bagets, focaccias etc. A bit pricey though (100-150 bath per loaf), esp. if you consider how cheap baking ingredients are here (even in Villa Market.. but there's also a "baking stuff" shop in Phuket town), but if you dont have time to mix and knead, or suddenly ran out of bread, it's a good option.
