Ok, let's see the outcome of this implementation. Police is also attending english classes which is good. I would particularly suggest Phuket Police to spend time in western countries to study the concept of patrolling and traffic flow management especially at traffic lights and circles cause I've seen weird stuffs applied here by cops with very original views of traffic issues.
Actually the Thai police do participate in an exchange program, We had two of the BIB in Melbourne for 3 months whom I escorted around to various jobs and the like and I was lucky enough with the help of my new friends to get an all expenses paid (my wages from my employer not thiers) 6 month holiday on exchange back to Chiangmai.

I googled "Melbourne cup Thailand" and there appears to be some real gala events happening tomorrow, the downside is that they are in BKK. Prices starting around 3,000 baht to 9,000 baht entry fee to the functions. Some wise monkey should consider planning an event for next year in Chiangmai.

Is there anywhere one can place a bet on the race apart from going to the course?
The lottery and the ponies are the only gambling allowed in Thailand I believe.

I cannot give any tips as my bet for the 1985 cup is still runnung somewhere.
The Downunder Bar on Loh Kro is also showing the Cup, starts at 0905 from memory and if you dress up you may win a prize.
Thats at the rear of the Bazaar, opposite the money exchange place right?????

Beware
in Chiang Mai
This post is worthless.
Why put up scaremongering posts?
Why not wait until it's verified and you can tell us something useful?
At least change the title of the post so that is meaningful.
You sound like my wife.
I am not scaremongering and received information from those closely linked. I just thought it may be useful to those about to invest thier pensions to be wary and ask a few more questions.

Beware

I have just learnt that a certain property development company in Chiangmai has had all it's assets siezed as part of a large drug investigation. This could have Repercussions for those who have paid deposits or for farangs holding 30 yr leases.

My vehicle has been stopped 3 times in 5 years and when they have seen me driving they have waved me on.
That is called "No speak Ang-grit, falang go away".
That's a relief, with my inferiority complex was was beginning to think I was truely not worthy to be spoken to or it was a racist issue

So you are speaking for the majority on here are you? Just how many of us do you actually know outside of the computer? I guess you personally know the majority otherwise you would not be qualified to speak for the majority. Actually I think the majority, but not speaking for the majority know that in a civilised society that attempting to pay off victims to make things go away is an offence (Pervert the course of justice) Why don't you run a poll on here and ask the majority who would attempt to pay off victims to turn the other cheek. What you are saying is the mority of us have no principles, are corrupt and dishonest.
The problem is he should pay victims appropriate compensation and go to jail. Paying civil liability or ability to pay off victims should not circumvent prosecution for criminal liability or impact criminal punishment. That's just more f'ed crap that leads to uneven handed application of the law.
If you think it's that way in the states, you either watch too much TV or got you head up your backside. Rich white collar dudes are getting hammered for crimes every day in US for much less than what this dude did.
I never even mentioned the states or even implied that rich folk in the U.S get off with crimes, in fact I didn't even mention any country in my post.
Actually I agree with you that he should face prosecution and money or compensation should not even be considered or mentioned until well after the criminal case has been finalised this includes appeal periods. If the prosection had any balls and wanted a fair and impartial trial then they would obtain a suspresion order preventing the offender from approaching the family and attempting to pay them off prior to criminal proceedings. Personally I would be charging them with perverting the course of justice.
-
"But I will make your post relevant by saying the overwhelming vast majority of posters here, if found in a similar situation (under influence kill somebody while driving), would jump at the chance to pay off somebody to make everything go away, if they could afford to, regardless if it a legal pay off or not. Trying to say otherwise is being blatantly unrealistic."
Speak for yourself, man! You are NOT speaking for me!
Well that is 3 of us against 2 so I guess we are the Majority and it has blown Nisa's theory straight out the window.

What can I say, The rule of law for the rich and the actual law for the not so rich, I guess she will ensure this law applies to the RedBull guy, would be a nice way to prove she means what she says.

Most have no idea about Obama or Mitt as they have no idea about horse racing.
I think it might be you who knows very little about Europe and horse racing.
Royal Ascot (UK)
Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (France)
Your tip for the Melbourne on Tuesday?

As an Aussie I have heard of Obama, he came over for a visit and was on the news, but who is this Mitt Character?

Just because he is rich should not mean he is a bad person or believe he is above the law but neither does it mean he is a good person with a good heart.
More obfuscation.
The whole point is that the rich are above the law in Thailand. The system is such that if one has money it can be manipulated or influenced.
Time and time again we see money being used to buy 'justice' from bribes, corruption, payments to victims and donations.
The mindset is that paying money somehow lessens the crime, placates the victims or is sufficient punishment.
Unless the payments are court ordered as part of a punishment, it merely shows the utter failure of a sham of a justice system in Thailand.
Nisa - A bad person would run a person down like a soi dog and leave them for dead and then try and cover it up. A good person would stop and try and render assistance. I would say he is a Rich BAD Person

We don't have it in Australia, thank god that is one silly American thing that hasn't edged it's way into Australia. When exactly is it so I have some warning to keep clear.
It was 31st October. BTW, next up is Loy Krathong which you also may want to keep clear of, as it's is a silly Indian thing that has edged it's way into Thailand.
Oh great I missed it I actually like Loy Krathong very peacefull. No little brats comitting a form of Robbery, Coff up the lollies and cakes or we will do untold horrors to you. Thank god they don't teach the Aussie kids the art of armed robbery from a very young age

Did he finally get his car fixed?
Pretty sure that is something he need not concern himself with since his family is also the sole authorized importer of Ferrari cars in Thailand. http://www.huffingto...lide=more248338
Interesting the article also mentions the victims family has already been given 3 million baht in compensation. May have already been reported before but I hadn't seen it. Sounds to me like they are doing everything they can to put this case to bed as quickly as possible.
Who cares if he paid 3 million or 3 billion baht. Paying someone off should not make you exempt from the judicial system he still needs to accept his punishment and hopefully that is gaol time.
I care, as well of course as the family, and am glad the person responsible for this tragedy has the means to make such compensation. The court will also care as it shows a level of responsibility and both the desire and actual action of providing compensating which does go a long way in terms of sentencing here as does cooperating and admitting guilt but we'll have to see how the last two factors play out. Although not an option, I personally would much rather see the person responsible for my death provide a better life for my family than see him do time and would feel the same way if it was a member of my family who died as I know they would feel the same way. I'd get no satisfaction from seeing somebody punished, once rational thinking returned, unless that person needed punishment because there was an indication he/she had not learned from their mistake and taking an innocent life was something they cared less about as opposed to something they'd have to live with and think about every day the rest of their life.
I don't know this young man enough to make any judgement about his character. I only know he made some serious errors in judgements that day but also know most of us have driven under the influence or been reckless in our lives but were lucky enough to not see this kind of result. Just because he is rich should not mean he is a bad person or believe he is above the law but neither does it mean he is a good person with a good heart.
Well you and I think differently. I would be extreemly insulted and very hurt if someone killed one of my family members and tried to pay me off in exchange for justice. If he killed a member of my family, he doesn't have enough, or would ever have enough money to compensate for the life he took or to make me feel better. Members of my family are priceless and I would rather see him rot in a prison where he could only feel a fraction of the pain and suffering that my family would. I would tell the scum to take the pitance he could possibly offer and shove it up his rear orifice. Offering money would be like him taking a dump on the body of a loved one. Sorry but that is how I feel about this person or any other person who thinks paying me off will make it all better, money will never replace the life that was taken..
