  1. These sort of crimes are dramatically increasing in and around Pattaya. I had my property broken into not long ago, fortunately no-one was injured, but it could have quite easily gone like the story above. Best decision I ever made was to move away from Pattaya.

I would say someone employed within the Complex involved with the robbers, guards etc. The victim more than likely liked to flaunt his wealth for all to see.

    What are you on?

What about utterly condemning the scum who did this?

Or perhaps there's an element on TV who secretly like it when 'rich farang' get stolen from by 'poor' criminals...

Condeming the criminals goes without saying. The point of the post was infact to highlight that you can limit your chances against becoming an easy target by NOT flaunting your wealth, IF that was the case. Does this explain things any easier for you?

  2. Best of luck to the Farang victim.

And screw his Thai wife, yes? Unless you have any proof to the contrary, why not assume they were a happily married couple who were BOTH TIED UP, ATTACKED AND ROBBED OF THEIR MONEY. Or is that possibility beyond belief for you?

People with all these comments about inside jobs and deceitful wives are revealing a great deal about themselves and nothing about the actual victims.

As to moving away from Pattaya to escape crime, where are these havens of crime-free existence? Theft, breaking and entering, phsyical assault happen everywhere. Even the Queen of England had an intruder in her bedroom.

Early on Friday morning, July 9, 1982, Queen Elizabeth II woke to find a strange man sitting at the end of her bed. The man, dressed in jeans and a dirty T-shirt, was cradling a broken ashtray and dripping blood onto the royal linens from a lacerated hand. The Queen kept calm and picked up the phone from her bedside table. She asked the operator at the palace switchboard to summon the police. Though the operator did pass the message to the police, the police didn't respond.

Not crime free, but massively reduced compared to Pattaya, do your homework

  3. I can't understand anyone keeping that amount of cash in a home safe, it seems the thieves may have known something.

It would have been safer to keep the cash in a secret hiding spot within the house and just a small amount of cash in the safe, that way the thieves would have got something and may have left without incident.

    Unlikely that will be caught.

Yeah silly of him to put it in the safe, why did he not put it under the matresswhistling.gif

  5. I purchasd $800 worth of MX clothing from the states a few years ago and they slapped 18,000 Baht on it for import tax!!!!! I argued for a few days and got nowhere. You either pay or you dont get your goods, good luck.

Just a note on the above: it was through Fedex

Don't ever use FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc., etc. Always use the postal service, standard registered airmail. On packages coming from the USA, tell the sender not to use one of those brightly colored "Priority Mail" or "Express Mail" boxes. Just a regular brown box. It seems they always open those other boxes. Never usually a problem on packages coming from Europe.

Correct, unfortunately I wasnt aware of this at the time. These independent postal companies have their own custom departments, just about everything that goes through their Thai depots. gets opened/queried for tax purposes.annoyed.gif

  6. If your looking for quality walking boots/shoes there are a few North Faces resellers around Chiang Mai. Google "North Face Chiang Mai" for locations, I believe one of them is in the Airport Plazza. Excellent products...

  7. I agree if the purpose of the journey is solely to get to Pattaya for the bike week the journey/direct route is a nightmare on a bike. Just a suggestion, if you have a few days spare before the event, plan the journey to Pattaya over a few days that will avoid the highways. There are some wonderful roads/places heading in a SE direction from Chiang Mai.If your hell bent on not riding! and you cant get a lift your best bet mate would be to send it by mail (train), itll cost you around 2,500 Baht. Just had a friend do this and when I collected it was all wrapped up nicely and still in one piecewink.gif

  8. The Canon EOS range have some fantastic entry level DSLR cameras. The Rebel XSi for instance is a fantastic camera to start off with. I own an EOS 5D MkII, expensive as it is, it produces some fantastic photographs.

Someone might correct me here but I have heard rumors that the King declared all Canon camera products tax free in Thailand, is this true?

As mentioned in previous posts Canon have stores in Chiang Mai for support if required.

  9. Any recommendations of good, easy, (and possible free) virtual machine software? Anyone?

Buy a mac, install VMWare Fusion and put whatever operating system you want. I can run OSX native with Windows7 and XP virtuals running simultaneously without flaw. I also have the option to boot into Windows7/XP etc etc using 100% hardware (not required unless gaming).

Mac's make sense, easier, less viruses, use less power and you wont be buying one every year to keep up with the trend. The whole world will be mac eventually, resistance is futile. This however is a different thread.

The original thread was to source an original copy of XP. I believe the response from H2oDunc was the best for my requirements. Thanks

"Safest way to ensure your copy is genuine is to buy a cheap copy. Install it. Download Windows Genuine Advantage and run it. This will tell you that your copy is fake and simply click on the " resolve now " button and pay MS. You get a product key via email and a DVD sent from Singapore"

  10. On the Speedtest.net website you all need to use the Ping Test which takes you to a different test page and then you'll be getting ping's of over 3-400ms. Not sure why the main page shows pings of less than 30mms to servers in Europe!!!

Because as I say.. The Thai ISP's have now decided to cheat.. They actually capture speedtest traffic and fake the results. More time wasted in pretending somethings not broken rather than fix the problem.

This one if for checking Down/Up-Load Speeds http://www.speedtest.net/

This one is for checking Ping/Latency http://www.pingtest.net/

It doesnt matter which server you choose for the speedtest, the latency results are always related to the server in Bangkok and is why everyone is showing results below 30ms, if you select "your results" it indicates this. No conspiracy theory involved. For accurate ping results use http://www.pingtest.net/ (which is from the same site)

OK.. So if its not cheating.. why do lines report max local linespeeds (same as a bangkok location speedtest) when doing international tests ?? The same lines test far lower when using other (non faked) speedtests like the speakeasy one. 3BB is faking the speed and ping results by capturing the traffic and feeding it bangkok based results.

Secondly, what you say is not correct for the 'unfaked' results, as can be proven with other ISP results.. 3bb are reporting sub 30 second international pings yet TOT reports this..

    1124911183.png

When I do international.. Yet if I do bangkok its in the 70 range.

    1124912694.png

So why is it a variable speed result now between domestic and international if "the latency results are always related to the server in Bangkok and is why everyone is showing results below 30ms" ?? Its not pure and simple. 'Everyone' doesnt report international pings in the sub 30ms range.. Only the cheating ISP's report that.

This has been dissected in detail by others.. speedtest.net is being faked by 3BB to provide false results.

I see your point and is why I indicated to use http://www.pingtest.net/ for a latency test of your connection. I cant answer why some ISP's use the BKK server and other the target server in the test, however if you look closer into the results it does indicate that the ping result is from the server in BKK. I have no idea why an ISP would want to cheat about their connection, when a connection ping is crap, well its, ahem, crap...you cant really hide it.

If you have a Mac you can use Network Utility to give you the most accurate results or use the Ping Command on a PC.

The original OP asked if he could play games with the state of the internet, specifically first person shooters. Im not a big fps fan but I have played COD in the past without any major latency issues. I have just booted up the old PS3 with GT5, it connects to servers in the UK and I can participate in races without experiencing any time warping around the track.

  15. My mother use to send them over in the post. Alot of them got lost, pretty sure the customs are scoffing them when they arrive in Bangkok.mad.gif

Anyways Ive started making my very own square sausage (Lorne Sausage), its dead easy and the ingreients are readily available in Chiang Mai, beautiful between two slices of bread, spread with Lurpak, its called a square sausage piece in Glasgow and offcourse you have to put HP Daddy Broon Sauce on it, mmmm im off too make one right now infact.

Next Im going to try my own haggis and black pudding, this will be slightly harder.

Ive got the missus trained how to make a fish supper. Get the Pacific Dori from Tops in the Airport Plaza this makes good fish supper, she's made her own batter and knows to put it into the chip pan when it gets hot as @£$% comes out nice and crispy. Chips are hame made, i peel them myself tae the right size, no too big, no too smaw'.

Now tae make yer chippy broon sauce, find a cheap brown sause fae somewhere and mix it with vinegar 70/30 and chuck it on everything, close yer eyes when yer scoffin' it and you'll here bagpipes.jap.gif

PS forgot to mention, ye hav tae eat aw' this on newspaper or it jist disnae taste the samethumbsup.gif

Happy Burns night tae yeez aw' on Tuesdaydrunk.gif

  16. Below are some screen shots of my connection.

The first result looks pretty good to a server in London but the second (proper ping test) to Japan is alot higher.

Ive played racing games on the PS3 to Europe and the States (PGR/F1/MotoGP etc) and havent experienced any major lag that is noticeable, well playable. Not really into FP shooters so cant comment on them. The only serious lag I get is from Pro Evoloution Soccer.

<div><br></div><div>If I change servers to UK or East coast US the ping results are between 3-400 m/s, pretty crap</div>
