Legendary quarterback Tom Brady has announced his retirement after 23 seasons in the NFL. “I’ll get to the point right away,” Brady, 45, said in a video posted to Twitter Wednesday. “I’m retiring for good. I know the process was a pretty big deal last time, so when I woke up this morning, I figured I’d just press record and let you guys know first. “It won’t be long-winded. You only get one super-emotional retirement essay, and I used mine up last year.” https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/01/sport/tom-brady-announces-retirement-spt-intl/index.html

The highly controversial and highly unpopular U.S. Supreme Court isn’t just facing a historic loss of confidence, it’s now facing yet another ethics scandal that is likely to lower even further public opinion of the far-right institution that in under two decades has seen its approval rating slashed. Although it will not hear arguments, the issue before the Supreme Court and the American people’s view of it, is, should a Justice’s spouse – in this case the spouse of Chief Justice John Roberts – be able to make millions of dollars recruiting attorneys who are placed into top law firms that argue cases before it? That’s the latest allegation, and already a spokesperson for the Court has issued a statement denying any ethical violations. https://www.rawstory.com/another-scotus-scandal-chief-justices-spouse-makes-millions-placing-attorneys-at-top-law-firms-that-argue-before-the-court/

Just before she left for school on the afternoon of 16 September last year, nine year-old Zin Nwe Phyo was thrilled to be given a new pair of sandals by her uncle. She made him a cup of coffee, put on the shoes and headed off to school, a 10-minute walk away in the village of Let Yet Kone in central Myanmar. Shortly afterwards, her uncle recalls, he saw two helicopters circling over the village. Suddenly they started shooting. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-64397397

Nevada’s last coal plant is scheduled to close in 2025 after 40 years of service due to rising operation costs. The closure will dramatically improve air quality, yet the economic impact will be borne by dozens of plant employees, as well as the surrounding community of Humboldt County. So what will replace the North Valmy coal plant? Local utility NV Energy is planning for a clean economic transition: Two new solar-plus-storage facilities will be built adjacent to the closing plant by 2025, creating hundreds of construction jobs, replacement union jobs, and long-term sustainable tax revenue. https://www.forbes.com/sites/energyinnovation/2023/01/30/99-of-us-coal-plants-are-more-expensive-than-new-renewables-a-coal-to-clean-transition-is-worth-589-billion-mostly-in-red-states/?sh=704f03a62510

WASHINGTON – The FBI searched President Joe Biden's former Washington, D.C. office after the president's lawyers initially alerted the National Archives about the discovery of classified documents at the location, a person familiar with the matter said Tuesday. No search warrant was issued in connection with the previously undisclosed action, which involved the consent of the president's legal team, said the source who is not authorized to comment publicly on the investigation. The search was conducted in November, after lawyers discovered an initial batch of documents Nov. 2, at the think tank office that Biden used after serving as vice president. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2023/01/31/fbi-biden-office-search/11155292002/

TUESDAY, Jan. 31, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- The United States spends up to four times more on health care than most wealthy nations, but it doesn't have much to show for it. Life expectancy in America continues to decline even though this country spends nearly 18% of its gross domestic product on health care, according to a new report from the nonprofit Commonwealth Fund. “The U.S. stands out as the only nation in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD] without universal health coverage, our life expectancy is dropping, and we have higher rates of avoidable deaths than other nations,” said report author Munira Gunja https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2023-01-31/u-s-leads-in-health-care-spending-but-is-last-for-health-outcomes-among-rich-nations

Executions of prisoners have been carried out in Saudi Arabia with no advance warning to their families, relatives have told the BBC. The country's execution rate has almost doubled since 2015 - according to a new human rights report - the year when King Salman and his son Mohammed bin Salman took charge. Mustafa al-Khayyat's family were given no notice that he was about to be killed. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-64338876

Most schools have some method to identify parents or authorized persons who can enter and have access to a particular child. Many schools require teachers and auxiliary to wear a picture ID at all times as well. A good quality phone picture with a plain background should be sufficient. Just cut the photo to passport size. A few years back, I had to renew my passport, but the photo I gave them was too old (it was actually the same photo as my last PP). The embassy called and told me they needed a new one and could I get it to them the same day. I was in a different city and the nice counsel officer told me to have someone take several photos with my phone against a plain white wall and email them. I did and they used one of those. I think if an embassy will renew a passport with a 'selfie', a school should be able to use one as well.

President Joe Biden intends to end the Covid-19 national and public health emergencies on May 11, the White House said Monday. That means that many Americans could have to start paying for Covid-19 testing and treatment after the declarations cease. The White House, in a statement of administration policy announcing opposition to two House Republican measures to end the emergencies, said the national emergency and public health emergency authorities declared in response to the pandemic would each be extended one final time to May 11. “This wind down would align with the Administration’s previous commitments to give at least 60 days’ notice prior to termination of the (public health emergency),” the statement said. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/30/politics/may-11-end-of-covid-and-public-health-emergencies/index.html

Being taxed whilst waiting for work visa & permit. Fair?
Scott replied to Deserted's topic in Teaching in Thailand Forum
When we have employees who are in the process of getting a work permit, they are not taxed. I am not sure of the paperwork involved now, but the Work Permit was necessary to have anyone legally listed as an employee. I remember a few employees getting upset when they were fully legal because their salary went down slightly. -
Fores, a Russian company that makes proppants for oil wells, has promised a cash reward to any soldier who destroys or captures any of the Abrams and Leopard tanks that Western countries have promised to Ukraine in recent weeks. The company said it will give five million rubles (about $72,000) for the first tank and 500,000 rubles (about $7,200) for each subsequent one. It also vowed to pay 15 million rubles (about $216,000) for downed F-15 or F-16 fighter jets, which Western allies have not yet agreed to provide to Ukraine. https://meduza.io/en/news/2023/01/30/russian-chemical-company-offers-cash-rewards-to-soldiers-who-destroy-western-tanks

A federal appeals court panel has put a secret hold on the Justice Department’s effort to access the phone of Rep. Scott Perry as part of a broader probe of efforts by Donald Trump and his allies to subvert the 2020 election. In a sealed order issued earlier this month, the three-judge panel temporarily blocked a lower-court ruling that granted prosecutors access to Perry’s communications. The Dec. 28 ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell was the product of a secret, monthslong legal battle by prosecutors who have been fighting the Pennsylvania Republican’s attorneys on the matter since August. https://www.politico.com/news/2023/01/30/secret-hold-doj-phone-trump-scott-perry-00080233

The UK economy will shrink and perform worse than other advanced economies as the cost of living continues to hit households, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said. The IMF said the economy will contract by 0.6% in 2023, rather than grow slightly as previously predicted. It said its new forecast reflected the UK's high energy prices and financial conditions, such as high inflation. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-64452995
