  4. Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones ordered to pay $4.1m over false Sandy Hook claims The jury in Alex Jones’s defamation trial on Thursday ordered the far-right conspiracy theorist to pay $4.1m in damages over his repeated claims that the deadly Sandy Hook school shooting was a hoax. Jurors in Austin, Texas, gave their verdict after deliberating about one hour Wednesday and seven hours Thursday at the end of a nine-days-long trial which saw Jones apologize and concede that the 2012 massacre at the elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, was “100% real”. The verdict levied against Jones was far below the $150m or more the plaintiffs had requested that jurors award them. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/aug/04/alex-jones-defamation-trial-verdict-sandy-hook?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

"We are prepared to take our response to the next level in addressing this virus and we urge every American to take monkeypox seriously," Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said to reporters during a briefing on Thursday. Archie Battersbee, 12, was found unconscious at home in Southend, Essex, on 7 April. 12. Infowars founder and conspiracist jack-of-all-trades Alex Jones is finally on trial to determine how much he must pay the families of ten victims of the Sandy Hook shooting after a judge last year found him liable for defamation for calling the attack a hoax. The parents of the children killed in the 2012 massacre are seeking as much as $150 million in damages from Jones, whose business filed for bankruptcy earlier this year. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/08/alex-jones-testified-in-sandy-hook-lawsuit-and-it-was-a-mess.html
  13. Ivana Trump’s death has taken a strange turn now that it’s been revealed that she’s buried by the first hole of Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The reason why she’s there suddenly makes sense because we all know Donald Trump loves a good deal, and he’s possibly getting one by creating a cemetery on his property. Thanks to New Jersey’s unique tax code, “land dedicated to cemetery purposes owned by any person shall be exempt from all taxes, rates or assessments.” https://news.yahoo.com/ivana-trumps-burial-place-may-155449388.html

  15. Here's an expansion on BkkBrian's above link: Voters in Kansas decide to keep abortion legal in the state, rejecting an amendment LAWRENCE, Kan. — Voters in Kansas rejected a proposed state constitutional amendment Tuesday that would have said there was no right to an abortion in the state, according to The Associated Press. Kansas was the first state to vote on abortion rights since the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson's Women's Health Organization. The vote, for now, preserves access to abortion in Kansas and serves as a rebuke to the regional trend of states significantly restricting access. https://www.npr.org/sections/2022-live-primary-election-race-results/2022/08/02/1115317596/kansas-voters-abortion-legal-reject-constitutional-amendment
  16. TOPEKA, Kan. -- Kansas is holding the nation's first test of voter feelings about the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, with people statewide deciding Tuesday whether to allow their conservative Legislature to further restrict or ban abortion. The referendum on the proposed anti-abortion amendment to the Kansas Constitution is being closely watched as a barometer of liberal and moderate voters' anger over the June ruling overturning the nationwide right to abortion. But the outcome might not reflect broader sentiments in the country as a whole, given how conservative Kansas is and how twice as many Republicans as Democrats have voted in its August primaries over the past decade. https://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/kansas-state-vote-abortion-roes-demise-87783200
  17. I've never had the occasion to ask anyone if they had HIV and I wouldn't necessarily expect the truth if I did. I have, however, known a few Thai people who did have it. One of the first that I knew had it was a young man who worked for me part time. He was very nice and eventually moved on to greener pastures and higher pay. Periodically, we would get together for lunch as he worked in a nice area of BKK. On a few rare occasions, he came by to borrow money -- always pretty small amounts to get by until pay day. It was clear that he was having some medical issues. Mostly he was looking gaunt and had lost a lot of weight and he was quite thin to begin with. He had spent a short time in hospital for some minor infection that just wouldn't clear up. I told him he really needed to get tested for HIV. We were close enough that I could talk to him without him getting upset and still I was insulated from his social circle and family enough that anything I knew could not get back to them. He did get tested. He was + and it was a difficult journey for him. His health was bad, he had multiple hospitalizations, got fired and eventually returned to his up-country family. I haven't heard from him for quite a while, but the last time I did, he was back in BKK and working. I am sure he keeps his status silent after having been fired. Another person I know who tested + did as the OP said. He simply disappeared. He went off social media and has never answered his phone call. Again, I did not know many of his friends, but did ask one where he was. His friend has never heard from him either.
  18. For decades, Donald Trump has boasted with impunity about a subject close to his heart and ego: his net worth. “I look better if I’m worth $10 billion than if I’m worth $4 billion,” he once said when disputing his ranking on the Forbes billionaires list. In a court case, he acknowledged that when it came to describing the value of his brand, “I’m as accurate as I think I can be.” https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-faces-questions-net-worth-182333848.html

  20. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi lands in Taiwan amid threats of Chinese retaliation (CNN)US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Taipei on Tuesday, marking a significant show of support for Taiwan despite China's threats of retaliation over the visit. Pelosi's stop in Taipei is the first time that a US House speaker has visited Taiwan in 25 years. Her trip comes at a low point in US-China relations and despite warnings from the Biden administration against a stop in Taiwan. https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/02/politics/nancy-pelosi-visit-taipei-taiwan-trip/index.html
  21. I think @johnnybangkokis giving you the correct information. Most schools want a person on site and ready to work and getting all the paperwork ahead of time becomes time consuming. In the past, we have only once had to supply a valid, properly signed and stamped contract for an overseas Embassy. We have been able to supply a letter of employment and the documents related tot he schools licensure, etc. It depends greatly on where the person is located. Unless an applicant is within easy access to an Embassy or consulate, all this is done by mail. We send a contract, they sign (and have it witnessed) and return it to us. We then sign and stamp it and send it back. In the past, that alone took a significant amount of time. The applicant then has to mail everything, including their passport to the Embassy. If they want anything else, it takes a lot of time. Most people that we have employed who have gone through this process eventually just gave up and got on a plane and flew here. A few have gone through the process, but all of them were close to an Embassy and made the multiple trips it took to get it done.

  23. WASHINGTON (AP) — A CIA drone strike has killed al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri in Afghanistan, according to five people familiar with the matter. Current and former officials began hearing Sunday afternoon that al-Zawahri had been killed in a drone strike, but the administration delayed releasing the information until his death could be confirmed, according to one person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter. White House officials declined to confirm al-Zawahri was killed but noted in a statement that the United States conducted a “successful” counterterrorism operation against a significant al-Qaida target, adding that "there were no civilian casualties.” https://www.yahoo.com/news/biden-speak-operation-against-al-211414500.html
  24. More than two years into the pandemic, many have burned out, quit their jobs or are struggling to make ends meet as record inflation takes a huge bite out of their paychecks. But, for the past eight weeks, thousands of people in the United Kingdom have tested a four-day schedule — with no cut to their pay — that could help usher in a new era of work. It's the world's biggest trial of a four-day work week so far. Already, some workers have said they feel happier, healthier and are doing better in their jobs. https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/01/business/4-day-work-week-uk-trial/index.html
