  1. Thammasat University sociology lecturer:

'While praising Yingluck for her "smart" fashion sense and photogenic quality - he predicted that by year's end the PM would be named one of the best-dressed female leaders in the world'

The man is a clown. Doesn't exactly impress one with the quality of some faculty members working at Thammasat these days does it?

I think Teerayut was making a joke.

A slight touch of sarcasm maybe?

  2. If they want to help ease traffic matters they should reduce the number of taxis. There are an extimated 70,000 taxis in a city that only requires about half that number. Another thing would be for the taxi driver to accept all fares who flag them. I am fed up with the crap of taxi drivers telling me they do not or will not go where I want to go. Failure to accept a fare should result in hack licenxse revocation. Now, why won't this ever happen? The taxi mafia.

Let them go blow smoke up someone else's ass.

The missus reckons the reason behind this is, that there is a change over time and if they can't make it back in time, they miss their "knock off'", hence the refusal. I don't get pissed off anymore and just ask the next bloke 10 meters behind.

Also reckon they should run an odds and evens number plate thingy, odds one day, evens the next and a free for all on Sunday.

  3. Have experianced this many times in thailand,so now I sit in the car and let the wife book in first then I come in with the bags after.

Yep, like my missus says anywhere we go and a rip off is imminent due to skin colour.

"you stay in the car and don't move"

  4. This whole struggle is about the US trying to prop up its debt ridden economy by convincing the world that they still need to use the US dollar. Once the world starts to think otherwise then all that printing by fiat becomes even more worthless. One of the main reasons why the Iranians are considered a threat is because of their willingness to trade oil for gold or some other form of currency. This is one of the principle reasons why Iraq was attacked (Saddam decided to trade Iraqi oil for Euros), Libya (Gaddafi was proposing to trade his oil for Gold). It is almost pointless reading the Western media these days, they just seem to be a propaganda arm for Western policy. If we want a more peaceful world then we need to have a balance of power, not a world where the US is the dominant power trying to tell everyone what to do. The Iranians will never use a nuclear weapon as it would mean total obliteration for them, a nuclear weapon would also act as a deter-ant against US and Israeli aggression-- after all Iran has not started a war in 400 years, how many have the US started?

This is simply perfect and time the world woke up to the U.S. invasion of all things decent and worthy on our planet, it's been going on for too long.

Hope to see the fall of the evil empire in my life time and crap to all those that say it will be the end of our financial sytems and so forth, more scare tactics!

  5. While the standards in most state schools have been declining, students from top private and international schools here often win international awards for their excellence in maths and science.

I think the author meant "... (Thai-) Chinese students from top private ..."

There ain't too many real Thais winning any international awards for excellence in anything at all.

We all all Thais from various background and origins.

Farangs, please do not force your racist concept onto us Thais.

And Thai aren'r racist, especially the Thai-Chinese!!!!!!!

  6. What a load of frogs farts.

These low lifes did sweet f all for the most part, if anything they only increased ours and others suffering by holding the water back and left us inundated for 6 weeks.

I wonder if the Army will be invited as they were only crew I ever saw do anything constructive out our way.

Oh yeah, still waiting on my 20,000 grand compensation, though this will be a bit like the Lebanese beauty queen, Asif!

  7. I found a couple of maps yesterday locating the flooded park. It is not near the river but about 10 miles north of don muang airport. Seems to me the floodwater is moving south on a broad front and the temporary dams will struggle to stop it

Correct and BKK will be under within two weeks, I'll put my house on it, well the one I just lost yesterday and I thought nah!it won't happen.

Check the front page of the Nation today and the satellite pic, that volume of water heading south and they reckon it will be saved.

Do not trust those moronic Thai polies, simply lying through their teeth, this is simply something they have no grasp for, the forces of nature and geography.

  8. The whole scam is nothing more than an elaborate extension by Thaksin , his family and their brown nosing acolytes to lure farmers into debt so as the local loan sharks can snatch more ground as their reward for supporting the P.T.P. ( Personal Thaskin Property) administration.

Yet again the innocents are funding their own debt bondage and enslavement to the new elite who profess sympathy for the ordinary people.

No small wonder that education is feared.,

    Summed up to perfection.

Dumb them down and you can get away with anything, then come election time 'trot out' the usual promises.

  9. It is unfortunate that people die suddenly as a result of gross negligence and greed committed by others, and those at fault should pay the price for their actions. But the more unfortunate fact is that everyone living in Thailand is currently a dead man walking. This country is killing itself with its pollution - leaded gas and paint; asbestos; chemical dumping; pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides leaching into the waterways; decimation of forests creating mudslides and erosion; and incredibly short-sighted farming practices that leave the land fallow after a decade of rape. Not all of it can be laid at the feet of ignorance, although it is a factor. We can blame the lack of education, or the lack of understanding in the common person as to cause and effect, but the truth is that much of Thai society is just trying to survive from day-to-day, and survival mode hardly facilitates change.

The Thai bureaucracy is, by any standard, one of the most byzantine in the modern world, and helps foment this survival mode mentality. The incredible corruption, at all levels of government, strips away any incentive that the individual might have to create a vehicle for change. It burdens growth, kills creation and stifles their economy. And yet, this country remains a Land Of Smiles. Its people, on the whole still embrace and share "jai dee" - and is one of the main reasons we farangs continue to live here. We (read ex-pats) continually complain about the lack of positive change, the lack of a critical and effective legislative branch, and the deficiency of basic rights ensuring equality for all citizens, including foreign guests, but we also stay and enjoy our special status. Perhaps we need to embrace a sense of compassion in our perspective, and stop deriding and denigrating the Thai people because they are acting like "Thais", and not acting like Americans, Europeans, Australians or even Japanese or Koreans.

This country is a Buddhist country, but it is forgetting, and or modifying the teachings of the Buddha so as to suit its needs. One can hardly blame them, and it is not the first, nor will it be the last to do so. All religious doctrine evolves to suit the needs of its populace. It is just unfortunate that we, again meaning 1st world countries, continue to export ideology that is based upon the preeminence of materialism as the answer to our basic human needs. We create the false image that our way not only is the "best" way, but also the "only" way to elevate the human condition. Please don't get me wrong, I am a capitalist at heart, and have the economic battle scars to prove it, but as the Buddha said "we create our suffering", and at the moment I feel as if we farangs have helped to create some of the common Thai person's suffering. Yes, we can, and should, become outraged at the deaths of farangs like Sarah, but let us not stop there. We should be outraged at the philosophical as well as physical deaths of the Thai people as well. As my grandfather used to say to me, "Screaming at the grass won't make it grow any faster". Let's stop screaming at things we can't change, and focus on those we can. If you want to complain, then while so doing, please also make the commitment to implement a strategy that might help facilitate change beneficial to your Thai brother and sister.

Thanks so much for the first paragraph as you have beaten me to the punch.

They are spraying certain pesticides in this country that have been outlawed in civilized countries for decades due to their carcinogenic properties. Don't want to alarm us all that much, but we are ingesting these everyday by simply breathing and eating. You can't wash these of the leaf, the carcass etc, they are ingested by the plant or the animal,we eat the plant or animal and you know the rest.

So sad that people are dying everyday, some not so sudden as poor Sarah, due to the negligence of government and a peoples mai pen yai attitude.

  10. The whole event does stir some residual national pride. Best wishes to them both and I hope the weather stays good too!

Maybe for the Brits but we Aussies blokes couldn't really care less about a couple of people on the other side of the world getting married. We will still be watching the Aussie footy. I wouldn't have even been at my own wedding if I didn't have to.

According to the news reports the Australian "tune in" numbers were astonishing, the numbers of people tuning into watch the royal wedding meant that Friday night football watching numbers were resigned to last place, really!

Like I said Aussie blokes don't grab a box tissues and sit around watching people getting married having a cry over true love. T,V sets tuned in maybe with women sitting around crying but the blokes would have been out in the shed with a slab tuned into the radio listening to the footy. The wedding of a couple of british people was screened on every bloody channel giving people absolutely no choice so I guess the figures of women watching were high. The only guys watching would have been doing it out of duress. Thank god for satellite T.V where we could watch Football. It was just two people getting married nothing interesting or entertaining.

    Spot on knackers,

Nothing better than footy on the radio when the 'charlie wheelers' have taken over the tube.

A bunch of mates, esky full of beers and the fire belting it out.

    Good times.

And the 'navy blues' broke the curse.

  11. A radio station conducted a survey in Australia some years ago asking people who the lady was in a photo (queen lizy) .From memory i think less than 25% recognised her. The only reason why they still have that silly family is to keep England's miserable economy ticking over'.

    Who cares ?

Wasnt there a vote on whether to keep the monarchy or not about 10 years ago in Australia and the majority voted in favour?

A slim majority by way of a tricked up referendum and that was close to 10 year ago.

I, like many others of the 'minority' can't wait for the day to be rid of the yolk.

    Get the jack mate!

  12. I agree the bag thing is the most annoying.

It's seems they are in a rush to get finished so they can go home.

It all starts on the first tee to the carpark.

What's the rush when on the weekends you get to the next tee and have to wait 10 minutes for group of 6 in front to get moving.
