  1. Thanks for the reply Jack. Perhaps I should look into it here first. I am coming from Canada. I kind of wanted to go and check out the schools first hand before I made a final decision on which one to attend. I do indeed want to learn Thai so that would be important for me. I will give it all some consideration.

If you truly want to learn the Thai Language then the ED Visa Schools that are aimed at Foreigners will only deliver the basics, the mickey mouse Thai for the most part and almost every school is pretty much the same. They might have different methods, one school might have a better teacher or if you plan to be in a group class I have been in classes where everyone is serious about learning and others where they didnt care about learning Thai at all.

If you want a better course I would look at the universities such as Payap Intensive Thai course where you go to school all week and get homework... It is a bit more intense for sure and of course the best way to learn Thai is to go out in the real world put your pride and shyness in your pocket and try to speak it with the locals which has always been a problem for me:).

Not saying the ED Visa Schools are bad but if you are a serious student you will probably out grown them pretty quick unless you happen to find a unique teacher that thinks out of the box and does not read from her textbook, however the the first year going to these schools is alright, like i said gives you the basics

  2. i was one of the rare people that enjoyed going to school and didnt work, I was even fine with going the 4 days a week

but it just got to complicated and rules for this visa seem to change on the fly and every immigration officer you speak to seems to have his/her own rules as well. I gave up on it this year went home for a while, came back on tourist... be prepared for a ride, I hope it works out for you but I dont know anyone anymore that has a smooth 1 year ride with an ED visa. Good Luck

  3. i been considering on trying it only because my CAT that I use which i pay 2500 a month for a 30/5 line lately has sucked big time, knocked off several times a week, slow all the time, have to reboot modem 5 times a day... seems i could try a 75/25 with sinet at 1899 a month but will it be good, who knows?, that is the thing with Internet in Thailand. You could have terrible internet at your place but the guy next door who has the same internet provider as you has fantastic internet. Kind of the luck of the draw....

but thinking even more, doesnt Sinet Lease Cat Internet lines, so its kind of like I am going back to CAT anyway, might end up with the same problem

I love Thailand, but i have to admit when it comes to Internet I always miss back home:) one of the things you just seem to have to put up with living in the land of smiles:)

Anyone got Sinet in he Chang Phuek area up by Mountain View Condo way? be curious

oh yeah another problem i happen to have a desktop and a laptop, in the past no issues but lately if I am downloading something on one machine, lets say a windows update, movie, apple update whatever, it makes the other system useless for internet, like only one system is allowed to take the bandwidth at a time:) didnt have that issue before

  4. In regards to the movie of the highway code my understanding is

    1. If you are getting your license for the first time - you have to watch it

    2. If you are moving from 1 year license to the 5 year (your first 5 year) - You do not have to watch it

    3. If you are on a 5 year license that expired and you are renewing for another license - they want to refresh you again and you have to watch it

  5. I did mine today 1 year to 5 year though it was a little more backed up. I did it for both car and motorbike and only needed one residence cert, med cert and your typical passport copies

Did the Lights test but did not watch a movie. I was there about 2pm but it took about 2.5 hours for me to get out. I must say the staff are very pleasant even late on a Friday afternoon

  6. Hello all just got back to Chiang Mai after a three month work session back home

While I was gone both my 1 year driver's license and my bike registration have expired. I was hoping for an updated list of what is needed to renew them all, presently my old info is from Chon Buri

    1. Can I do both the drivers license renewal and the registration of the bike at the same place and where do I go to get it done

    2. Do I need a certificate of resident for a renewal - at immigration office? Do I need to go in early?

    3. Do I need a doc certificate?

Anyone do it all recently and can help me out.. I read some posts on here but they seem to be a mixed back of different procedures.

  7. If I leave before my 90 Report check In, when I fly back into the country a month later (going home for a month) do I get a new 90 day report slip in my passport at the airport? How Does it work in that case?

    also

If my 90 check in was lets say April 25 and I left the country on April 25th is that okay? or should I leave on the 24

    Thanks

  8. Good Day All

I have a 1 year license for both a car and a motorbike that expires in May 28. I like to extend it to the 5 years

but I am leaving in April to go home for 2 or 3 months

I want to know if I can extend to the 5 years either before I go, or when I return. Just not sure of the rules for early extending or late extending

Can someone enlighten me on it?

    thanks

  9. all i know is

    1. I wanted to change schools as i moved somewhere else in Thailand

    2. I left the country to reset my visa in Laos and got a new ED Visa Stamp with my new school

    3. During the first 90 extension Chiang Mai immigration said I had to cancel my old school and technically I was now 90 days overstay

but if I got my letter from my old school they would cancel it and start using the new visa

that is the process I personally went through

  10. yeah its a rule that i been hit with as well

You need the cancellation letter from your school if you are switching visas

I been told several times from several people you dont have to do it, but then i get to immigration and you do

i switched from one school to the other and cancelled an ED visa but had to go immigration twice because of it as i got denied first time without my special cancel letter

and that was even after i left the country and came back with a new visa

  11. I know when you do a regular 90 day report you get that slip they put in the back of your passport to tell you that you paid and

when to come back for your next 90 day

If you do end up leaving before the 90 report like the OP Did, does the immigration at the airport put another new 90 day slip in your passport with the next date

or do you just figure it out on your own the first time when u fly back in
