  1. are there any genuine African tourists in LOS or are they all up to some nefarious activity somewhere in town ?

i never seen any in a deckchair on the beach sunbathing or in a bar spending money on drinks .

Probably a stupid question I know, but why would they be on a beach sunbathing?

to top up their suntan ??

    enjoying a bottle of Leo

    having a smoke

    reading the paper

    caressing a thai gal

    you my friend are a recist <deleted>, <deleted>, do <deleted> a duck,

    you racist

  2. I'm looking for a pure Large White sow from around 6 or 7 months. I prefer around Khon Kaen or transport can be talk about.

Also I look for pure crossbreed sows (father Landrace, mother Large White)

Who can help me on my search.

    Thx

    me too, i need one

  3. I would start with a pure race sow. What breed depending a bit on the available boar or sperm. Often a pure Duroc.Later you can use gilts as a new sow.

    My experience with growers.

Duroc and duroc-landrace grow quick until 90 kg. If you have a market for 70kg-100 kg they are great. For me 10-100 in 120 days average.

Largewhite and largewhite-duroc are great for 120+kg. They grow large but not fat until 90kg after which they quickly gain bulk. They take a bit longer but in. 5 months they grow bigger then duroc-Landrace.

Anyone knows a place near khon kaen where i could purchase a pure race sows?

how do i go about it?

  4. Good morning all

so i am looking to buy a couple of sows,

    what i want?

there is a lot of talk around here, get a land race to mix with duroc will give you fast growing piglets,

some say the say has to be pure race to start off with,

    advice please

  5. It is not a house ownership book as stated, you can live in rented accom and get the owner to help get a yellow book

Does that mean even if you are the man on the house,(thai offcourse ) and your blue book show that, but the land where the house is built belongs to another person the owner of the land can tell you piss off and crush your house and build a new one?

  6. Humblefarang, If you did not do so already, take a look at what other local small pigfarmers are doing. With last years low prices almost every small pigfarmer around here quit. Now there are only cp, betagro, the agricultural office farm, me and two others. Since cp does not sell to local butchers, the agr.off farm sells now at prices higher then cp, I can sell at 66-67 thb-kg. And they are queing for my pigs. Of course you have to deliver quality. Like many thing pig prices are cyclical and are governed by market.

Retrospectivaly last years low prices were possitive for me since it forced my competitors out allowing me to build a bigger consumer base. If you are in amy kind of farming you will have lean years and good years. The trick is to make an average nice profit capatalizing on the good years. But farming is no way to make a quick buck.

Sorry if I sound condescending, just trying to advice and share my thoughts that bad years don't have to be 'bad'. That said 60thb/kg should be a nice profit. If not your costs are too high and you should reduce them or get out.

    spot on right Revar,

i am reducing my growing right know, the profit was not bad, anything better than losses, we take care of it our selves, i may be landing a job soon here hence reducing the swine in the house.

the market its not too bad around here, in fact i have a mate here that kills pigs for a living that has a 80pig order for some weeding and stuff like that mine are too small to kill, price is 62 a kilo

  7. just got 7 out of the door at 60 not far from khon kaen,

another 20 to go in about 2 months

down to 1 sow and not planning to get any more than that,

it has become a pain in the arse.

    selling cheap, very little profit,

only good thing is the amount of shit i got in the last two years has saved a lot in fertilizer

  8. finally the price ii gone up around here,

selling my last 8 for 60 a kilo to a local temple, guaranteed 110 kilos up each, never kept them so long, they have a massive coat of fat, the buys does not care, actually he said the fatter the better,

raising another 36 piglets at the moment,

    one question fellas,

when you say my pigs are 2 months or whatever age,do you mean from birth age or from when they are taken out from the sow to eat by themselves?

  9. Generator? What the heck are you talking about? Six mtr concrete poles are about 500 baht each the authority will tell you how many you need. To set them in place requires only a small hole about 50cm deep and takes about 10 minutes to dig. The cable is supplied by the authority and, although I forget the cost, is not really expensive. A deposit is required for the meter which, is placed right in front of your home. Three phase electricity is cheaper per unit and when i last had it installed the deposit payable was 15,000 baht. I think that you will find the deposit for 5amp to be 5000 baht

what do you mean a generator,

i have falang neighbor that got power to his rice mill, 300-350 meters away from the road thru his land not governament road, kalasin to be precise ,3 phase

poles, wire, labour, 900.000 without transformer

poles, wire, labour 1.300000 with transformer

    first quotes

he goes off to buy his own tranformer found one 200.000

call back the for a new quote, the guy come start going on about this and that falang put 10.000 in his hand and asked how much?

guy goes let me call boss,

after talk to boss( two days we came back with crane a do the job 600.000

    job done thai style

the 300 odd meter road in private not governament, he just choose them to do the job and bought everything apart from the transformer from them.

cheap expensive i would not know. all i know the falang thinks is a good price

  10. imagine three plots of land fenced in to three different area,

once they are done with one side open the fence and moved them, get the tractor in redo that last plot, replant

what greens? cabbage, carrots, banana trunks rice lots of green leaf vegetables that you see on Thai dishes everyday, corn, and yes they will be fed normal feed but not as much as what they eat in farm.

of course i cannot just put the fence up today and get it going tomorrow, it needs to be planed,

at the moment i am trying to learn as much as i can

what race? actually am not worried whatever i had in the pens i will put them out side too,

personally i don't think it will be a problem

    shade, water,

  11. You are right you cannot just let them loose,

It is a fenced area, there would be shade, plenty, water and clean sleeping place, similar to a pen with a back garden (massive back garden with mud to cover their skins(avoid sunburn) very clean fresh water 24h a day,

Snakes no problem (put a few drips of diesel around the fence snakes hate the smell of it( they will never come close)

Scorpions, 6 years only seen one, not worried.

There would be a semi closed pen in the area no rain no wind,

They smart animals they would learn alone,

Desease: that’s a tricky one even in a farm,

Feed: mostly greens but proper feed once a day.

As I said I am looking into it, I have found on the net some articles about it

Australia and new Zealand seem to have a few free range farms,

My aim is to beat the feed prices but still be in the game, of pig farming,

  12. good morning fellas,

i am thinking of going free range ishhh,

would i be making a mistake in

setting up a wire fence, and shelter a clean place to eat and drink.

and let out all the pigs in there,

i wont breed free range but only let the piglets that are about one month old.

also apparently they can eat grass and vegetable and it probably means feed cost will be cheaper, in the other hand they will grow slower than indoors that's OK with me,

Please guys add you knowledge, experience and comments,

  13. I am a pig herdsman. I wash them.I feed them. And I listen to them. No I take more than few minutes to clean each pen, in fact 14 pens takes all day. So what? Do your pigs crowd the door when You want to come inside, but move away and let you in?

I didnt start this about 5.5 kg runts. I'm out, i have a few great animals that will not realize tjheir potential. That is hurt enough. fuc_k you all

i have been reading this forum for quite a while and i have learned a lot a hell of a lot, most if it from IA, and i thank you for you contribution, i really mean it.

but there 5-6 user names that are also knowledgeable, i can see that and also experienced,

IA i think i understand your point of being a herdsman, but also you have to respect that other look at it as income,/wages.

such as my self, yes sure you can get attached to the beast as i am at the moment for example, i have a sow that i care for everyday, it has given me 6 rounds of piglets, and i have only lost 3 piglets from her out of all the 6 rounds, but she will be sold for meat, i feel a bit (errr, not sure how to say it) sad maybe, but the reason i got her first was for in income, give me piglets, raised them kill them eat them, simple as hard as it may sound,

your (F_uck you all) leaves a bit shocked, i have a feeling you may have other things going on that have accumulated such a feeling and you have just let it out,

I sincerely hope that once you reflect back on you last post you decide to came back and continue this great thread that actually as we all know you started it.

    Cheers, HF

  14. No, sorry, my mistake IA

there are two size farms with betagro one accomodates about 400 pigs (not 40) and the other is about 700 pigs.

price is about 900.000-1000000 and 1.8 mil-1.9mil respectively,

this is excluding the preparation of the land ie. flatening plus earth requirements, water supply and elecricity,

No problems HF, thought as much. After the last year or so, a constant income stream of 500 baht/pig is a breathe of fresh air albeit a poor return. The attractive part is the vast reduction needed in working capital. Not for me, no interest in working for wages on my own farm, especially at my stage of live.

A question that remains before you can judge the cash flow needs is the batch size of piglets delivered?

personally i would not mind getting into contract growing, but that means an investment into a farm (proper farm), we are planning to reduce the pig raising as much as possible,

but with 35 new piglets and three sows, and 12 beasts at around 85 kilos, the low price, its hard to sell anything, even though it may be the wisest thing. the price is just too low and the feed is going up.

we are trying to get to grips with alternative feeding, but it look a bit too far from reality,

  15. No, sorry, my mistake IA

  16. there is nothing to pay

Any1 know how it works with contract farming. Is booth feed and piglet free or how does it work? What about if some of pigs die, who pay for that?

there is nothing to pay, if the pig dies you wont get the money from it,

the feed is all free hence only 5baht per kilo.

you need to build the farm according to their standards,

betagro has two corrently two size farms,

it does not matter who build it as long as they geographically orientated the way they want which is east west,

the small farm it costs about 1 mil for about 40 pigs and the larger is about 1.8 mil.

the first things to get ready is the land, near a main road and far from village.

    then get water and electricity

contact your local office and then just follow their requirements
