  1. Thais in Myanmar warned to be cautious
    2412002-wpcf_728x409.jpg
The Thai embassy in Rangoon has warned Thai nationals living or travelling in Myanmar to take extraordinary cautions and to keep abreast with news developments following a protest by about 30 Burmese in front of the embassy on Thursday said Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Sek Wannamethee.
The protesters rallied in front of the embassy for about an hour to voice their opposition to the Koh Samui provincial court’s verdict condemning two Myanmar migrant workers to death after finding them guilty of the murder of two British backpackers, David Miller and Hannah Witheridge, on Koh Tao island last year.
The Myanmar government, said Mr Sek, has deployed more policemen, between 15-20, in front of the embassy as a precaution.
The protest was peaceful and lasted about an hour before the protesters dispersed, he added.
The embassy however reported that no Thais had been affected yet by the protest against the conviction verdict, said Mr Sek.

The obvious question begging to be answered is why is there no protest at the Thai embassy in London???

........perhaps because the victims' family has accepted the verdict?

  2. I don't think it's ever going to be solved. It would take more change than Thai society, at every level, is prepared to concede.

....if there is a will there will be a way.........

health / safety starts with common sense.......

eradicating labour and working conditions' abuses starts with compliance enforcements.........

random examples - in the uk, every property for sale must first be certified by a professional, eg a registered electrician......

every commercial entity is legally required to have minimum public liability insurance......

every adult individual has a tax identity and are required to submit tax returns if self employed........etc, etc

yes, it will take time, we should not judge by their inability to make things happen (the western way) overnight.......get to the root of the 'problems'....education / corruption / lack of contingent planning / law enforcement / soi dogs / noise, including temples, and diminish the need of the STUPID 'loss of face' philosophy........

  3. I like when I go to a restaurant and order the same food as another table and get charged double what they are charged. Because I am rich and I love Thai people and it's always good to be complimented and to be thought of as upper class and to be respected.

My biggest complaint is that chain restaurants do not have a dual pricing system. I almost had a heartache at KFC when they insisted I pay the same prices as the rest of the customers.

Look at it another way - tourist attractions which charge, should generally subsidize locals by way of free or reduced rates........simple!! The 'dual' pricing is really for the benefit of locals, and is not only confined to Thailand.

There are establishments in Las Vegas that charge entrance fees to tourists, unless you can prove local residency by way of driver's licence, etc.

KFC hardly qualifies as a tourist attraction......

    I'll put my coat on.......

  4. jeez...you must have lots of time on your hands to write such a long article!

Whereas I sympathise, why did you not exercise a bit of common sense - that's all there is to it....

    1) never take any agents words as gospel

    2) always test out the equipment

    3) do not part with advances / deposits until your conditions are met

    4) 'laundry' service is easily affordable, so why fret about DIY laundry?

Sorry to be blunt, but often, it can be a wake up call........

  5. Not your wife, not your problem.

Unless you still have access to the original 'product'.

    Point to note,

All property, vehicles and accounts in her name can be claimed by the bank, not just the hotel.

Only if they are under a Limited Company they can, this is the pupose of a limited company....limited liability...legal person and all.....anything which is in her personal name cant be touched by the bank...

Ie the Yaris and the 3 bed house....assuming they are in her own name

....bank may have asked for personal guarantees.........

If the business was not that successful, why would she have wanted to purchase the land and commit additional cashflow? Also, whoever at the bank authorised the loan must live in a cuckoo land if they thought the business was able to service the loan...........

Do they even have proper credit checks in Thailand?

  6. The OP seems to have money. Why don't you just pay for the elite visa that will give you 6 years of stay for 500k in peace than going through the headache that investing here could cost you. Or let alone just deposit the money (10m) in the bank and get the investment visa as someone suggested. From all what I have read investing here may be the highest risk that one can take.

...can the 10m equivalent be held in usd, ukp or euros in a thai bank?

Also, up to what amount is 'protected' by law per bank?

  7. The article said they had PIN codes on a paper. Maybe they are cloned magnetic cards. So the holders did not know that their cards were stolen. And therefore they had not been closed I believe?

I believe they are cards from abroad that they use to withdraw in Thai ATM's as many still use the magnetic stripe in Thailand.

....they are fake cards...........mainly US & EU victims

......hackers may remain ahead of tech regardless......

  8. The picture of the boat in this post shows to is sitting very high up in the water. If this is a recent photo of the boat after it arrived in Phuket I'm guessing it was already relieved of its illegal cargo of tooth fish. So the question really is: Where did the fish go? Follow the fish and I think the mystery will be solved...methinks it's all a bit fishy!

......nah, pic taken at low tide?

how can something like this out-run the aussie & kiwi navy?

.........article is typically difficult to read.......

  9. >>Asked if he was confident in keeping the situation under control, he shot back at reporters. "Can I give order to the disease? It’s up to all Thais who have to be on alert and contact the authorities if something suspicious happens. I can’t give order to the disease."<< Quote

Another balanced and well thought through reply from the Leader..................

    Pressure getting to him??

He is just not familiar with 'political language', that's all.

At least he airs his views as he sees fit........nothing wrong with that, besides, the question was a bit stupid anyway.

  10. FORMER MINISTER DECLARED 'UNUSUALLY WEALTHY';

I am a home theater enthusiast, on a budget. I went to a shop in BKK to try and source rigid fiberglass insulation for sound absorption panels.

They sell 600,000 THB speakers at this shop. I asked the guy if he meets a lot of captains of industry. He said yes, and a lot of "big Police and Generals". Hmmm...

....they should also look into the Ferrari Owners Club of Thailand and validate the means and source of the cars owned.........heard somewhere that 90% of members are attached to the police farce.....

  11. people working on Tourist visas etc.

Since I am working legally here, including paying taxes, and paying a lot of money for that, I do mind others working on tourist visa and not having those expenses. That is really unfair competition.

......jeez, there may be a handful working on a tourist visa, but please try not to prima-donna yourself. Every country on earth has someone working illegally, hardly a new thing, and not really worth making yourself believe otherwise, get a grip man!

  12. Thanks Gents... I know its going to be a crap shoot. The reason I asked was to find the potential parameters that i might expect. With the car importing stories, i guess the worst case is you walk away from you car, only to see it go to auction....best case it you pay silly money for it, but it being worth it as compared with what you can get locally. With my stuff, I dont know if I could actually walk away from it, and if thats the case, I'm guessing that the more corrupt officials will be aware of that and have me over a barrel so to speak.

Thanks for your input and link.

Are there not special concessions for returning Thais and their cars?

Where I live the are just now planting a new crop of rice while these farmers and protesting who planting the rice? No wonder their poor.

In my wife's village, which is 100% red shirt, most have not been paid and have no money to buy supplies for a new crop. Many owe money to illegal money lenders and are in dire straights.

I guess the farmer where I live are smart and have money or been paid by the government

(I guess) Are all of your posts based on guesswork.

You claim to live in Thailand and represent the red shirts but at the same time you don't even know what is happening on your own doorstep.

If the farmers are smart where you live, why don't you follow suit and try to be at least a little smart?

Is there really any need for this..........?
