It was the VN war that put it on the map, US military guys returning with tales of sensual adventures and knock-out marijuana in LOS.  There was a movie (French, I think) called Emmanuelle that pushed the reputation of it being a flesh pit.  The word backpacker (for such travellers) wasn't used yet, and there were a lot of young people doing the overland route through Asia travelling from Oz and NZ to UK, and back.  Even then, Bkk was known as one of the best places in the world for cheap air tickets -- maybe it has changed now, but it was not possible to cross into Burma (now Myanmar) by land.

The mid-1980s or so amped up the backpacker thing; there was no KSR before then, most of the cheap places to stay were around Hualumpong, but there was nothing like what KSR has become. 

Something else that happened in the 1980s was Nepal became a big sports-adventure destination, offering white-water rafting, which I don't recall being offered in the 1970s.  I suspect a lot of people flew into Katmandu via BKK.

And next week will be infrastructure week, and always will be.

There has been nothing done in the past decades to imply otherwise. 

IMO if/when the GOP cleans up its act they will purge all those who were part of the MAGA farce.  It will be like in the doomsday movies where the survivors who turned cannibal will be killed off.  But things are going to get a lot worse for the US right-wing before they get better, and the Dems seem to be playing it smart (for a change): back off and let them devour each other.  The present GOP is bothered by this, it really irked them that during McCarthy's SOTH fiasco the Dems were laughing and boozing it up while they were wringing their hands.

On the other hand I do not at all cherish the arrival of the New GOP headed by the likes of Liz Cheney, but I may not live to see that (Cheney 2032?).  It looks like Nikki will not be allowed into the new fold.

BTW I still stand by the possibility that by the time November comes around neither of the two major party's current candidates will be in the running.

It is not uncommon to see cars full of lads from Singapore coming across Sadao for a little bit of adult entertainment.  Maybe with this the parents will come along to gamble.

A Malay taxi driver that works the Sadao-area border told me he would rather deal with Thai police, because they will take the money and be on their way.  The Malay cops also like to beat guys up, use a stranglehold, etc.  Just passing that on.

If you want diving/snorkeling the islands off the east coast, like the Perhentians, are the places to go.  Haven't been there in 10+ years.  Heard something about rat infestation a while back.

The west coast is mostly cultural stuff, like Penang and Ipoh.

I agree on giving Sing a pass.  Also, IMO, the run from KL to Sing isn't very exciting. 

What it really means is if you want to go in the direction opposite the one designated you'll have to pay a toll. 

Maybe BiB will work out a side hustle for the gowityu ladies who solicit customers all day, to call in the direction of the offenders.
