  1. At 1600 Baht, they must be using a synthetic oil. IIRC, most Mitsubishi dealers use Shell Helix Ultra - if that's what you're getting, yes, 1600 is a fair price for ~6L of it and a new oil filter...

Just don't listen to them if they suggest 5,000KM oil change intervals smile.png

In the UK the recommended oil change intervals for the turbo version is 3,000 miles so 5,000km here would be the equivalent.

  2. How did they get away with putting the fence up without survey.

Did you go halves in the survey with the neighbour mate.

Nope...nothing...one night the boundry pegs got changed....and she got death threats when she tried to do something to stop them...

This was all recorded and handed to Police in a report, about the incident....

And here she is now losing her land, with no recourse whatsoever....

As said before report it to anti-corruption provide them with all the evidence, you can post it to them once you have their address. Get your wife to write the envelope in Thai and any explanatory information too. It's time the village bully got his comeuppance. Anti-corruption investigators are very active under the current administration.

  3. But seriously, have any of you actually been into one of the government hospitals that participate in the scheme? Go in with a simple pimple of your leg and your more likely to come out with a leg amputated.

Of all the things I would not let any Thai Government program 'help' me with, number one, by a country mile is health insurance. I'll give up on practically everything to buy insurance that allows treatment in a private hospital, which I have to say in my experience are as good as any in the west.

Have you not noticed that most doctors work in BOTH private and government hospitals? Sure, a private hospital is more efficient and comfortable, of that I'm sure.

Yes they work in both types of hospital and usually have a private clinic as well.

  4. I can't say I am against the junta staying on longer. I finally see them going after stuff like corruption (at least more as the previous government). Doing something about encroachment, the taxi's, the beaches and many other things. No violence on the street no judges being threatened. Finally the law can get a bit of hold in Thailand. Those connected before are slowly but surely being checked for corruption and action taken. I have never before seen so many high level cases going to court. Totally different then when PTP was in power.

For us foreigners nothing much has changed, (except that the 90 days is now doable on-line, under Thaksins government was the 90 days checks were reinstated so this is clearly better). But this not about foreigners.. we play a small role.. if any so i go for stability if the red wants to riot let them riot outside of BKK. Wonder if the red members like it if they cause trouble at their doorstep.

Quite smart of them to do it this way and the longer the reds are deprived of funds (no longer in power no longer able to rape the Thai treasury) the less likely it is that they come back unless someone is going to risk a whole lot of money.

Also this whole process should not be rushed.. a good charter should emerge.. not a hastily assembled one.

All this does not mean I agree with all the junta does.. certainly not but I see it as the least bad solution.

You simply don't get it, do you ??

You think that cleaning a few beaches, fixing the taxi ranks (sort of fixed) and the all important lottery pricing are the way forward?

Those are low hanging fruits, easy to pick and parade for the sheep!!

For good measure throw in a purge against political opponents, and if nothing else works, charge them with LM !!

    >> if any so i go for stability if the red wants to riot let them riot outside of BKK. Wonder if the red members like it if they cause trouble at their doorstep<<

So your hatred for the PTP, all comes down to, that the pesky demonstrators inconvenienced Khun Robbie on his way to work??

Don't you think that the majority of Thai voters are "inconvenienced" by over and over again see their

constitutionally cast votes voided by the army and/or the judiciary??

Yes Thailand needs reforms, but not at gunpoint!!

Let the voters decide, who they want to steal from them...............coffee1.gif

I guess you don't get it but that is clear.

You call it low hanging fruits.. i call it progress.. the previous government did not even go for low hanging fruit, instead all they did was to cheat the Thai taxpayer out of money.. and even more important get Thaksin back and and clear 26.000 !!! corruption cases with the amnesty. That is walking backwards.. compared to that low hanging fruits is a major step.

Yes the protesters did inconvenience me, but that was not really a problem. The deaths and violence were especially as the previous government seemed to use this to force the protesters to go home. (unleashing their red war dogs on them with one hand) while telling the protesters to go home as they were unsafe. No red-shirt was caught.. until the army stepped in. Makes the smart people think (not you your brain washed).

At least we agree that Thailand needs reforms.

Actually unlike you I don't think the voters should whitewash criminals, i feel that the law should always be upheld. Winning an election does not mean you don't have to uphold the law and play by the rules. Had the PTP known that there would not be a coup. I would have supported even the PTP if they had uphold the law (no black rice budgets and so on.. no 2 trillion loan to cover up the losses of a rice program), no crazy amnesty for one man, no convicted criminal leading a country by proxy. Just things that would not be ok in a real democracy.

The moment there is a real democracy id defend it against the army, fake democracies are on par with an junta and if I have to choose ill go for the one that is least bad. For instance one that brings a country forward.. even if only low hanging fruits.. and not lets a country walk backwards.. with dropping 26.000 corruption cases and bringing a corrupt criminal back.

What would you suggest we do if the army stay in power and the corruption still goes on unabated? as previous experience shows it will.

Corruption is being tackled at many levels, that is a fact. However, to bring the thieves to justice takes time as gathering the evidence and presenting a case for prosecution is not simple. We should see the fruits of the endeavours by the anti-corruption offices starting to come to fruition in the next year and thereafter.

  5. I take it that it is your political belief that PM Prayuth is corrupt

It's not political, it's based upon evidence: http://thediplomat.com/2014/10/thai-junta-beset-by-corruption-scandals/

and statements in Foreign Policy, a respected journal:

"...Prayuth soon became a prominent member of the Eastern Tigers, a royalist military faction based in eastern Thailand. In the 1990s, Chambers said, the Eastern Tigers amassed considerable wealth by trading gems with Cambodian Khmer Rouge insurgents based along the two countries’ border, a racket which “directly benefited” the faction and some of its commanders. Within a decade, the Eastern Tigers dominated the Thai military."

When making a generalisation from a quote you conveniently ignore, " some of its commanders." Therefore you take it upon yourself to tar them all with the same brush. Regardless of the subject, that is deliberate misrepresentation to suit your own agenda. If you cannot be honest about your quotes it's better to keep quiet.

  6. Only a driver with something to fear should be concerned about check points and speed cameras.

But then of course there is the traffic delay to be concerned about (for those who have nothing to fear).

Then you dont know anything about Thailand.

Most checkpoints will stop most motorcycles and most farangs they can spot and find waterver excuse to take your money and waste your time.

Most checkpoints do not stop farangs in my experience, trucks are their favourite target.

  7. How to make people care enough to do something about the problem? I just don't see the will to do anything about the horrendous death toll on the roads here.

The police ignore helmetless riders, ignore appalling driving, ignore unlicensed drivers/riders............

Everybody knows several people who have died in rta's yet it does nothing to raise standards.

It won't change and all I can do is drive as safely as possible to protect myself and loved ones.

Unfortunately it is not uncommon for police to ride without a helmet, usually wearing their squashed police version or a peak cap.

  8. "...... there should be only one question in the referendum - do you accept or reject the draft charter?"

The far more significant factor than the question, is who will fill the information void leading up to this referendum. The main charge against this Charter is that it is undemocratic...A logical conclusion considering its authorship.....But will those people also self-servingly fill the compliant media with their advocacy of their charter, to the exclusion of others?...Remember, it is these people who consider 'debate' to be 'conflict'.....They feel that opposing views disturb their "calmness" as one of them said recently.....

"The CDC, he said, would revamp the six electoral regions in order to create a greater level playing field between big and small political parties. This was in line with the CDC's aim to ensure a political balance"

Isn't this called 'gerrymandering' in mature Democracies.....Gerrymandering being defined as:

"The dividing of a state, county, etc., into election districts so as to give one political party a majority in many districts while

concentrating the voting strength of the other party into as few districts as possible.

In other words, diddling with electoral processes in some form-or-other, to advantage a particular side....In this instance it isn't rocket science to speculate who will be advantaged given the source of the quote above.

Electoral boundaries have changed many times in the UK and will continue to do so and it is not considered as gerrymandering. So what's new about that?

  9. A departure of Greece from the Euro, and possibly the EU, can only act to strengthen both. I don't know that in the long run Greece won't end up stronger as a result.

Sometimes with a petulant child, you have to help them pack their bags so they can run away.

Once they are set adrift in the Mediterranean like the other economic migrants, they may start viewing the world in a different light.

The departure of Greece from the Euro and the EU will encourage, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Cyprus to follow the same route.

As far as strengthening it is concerned that would require a total rethink and reorganisation, with the elimination of the Strasburg parliament, (a sop to the French) the submission of accounts to auditors going back to year one and massive reduction in endemic corruption. If they could survive an auditors report that would be as good as a Houdini act.

Can't somehow see the Euro surviving and the EU only as a trading block as was the idea sold to the UK amongst others at the time of their referendum.

  10. >>Molsawan said she was told by the Canadian that he wanted her to help him smuggle in luxurious handbags from Laos. She was told to pick up the suitcase left beside a pole at the Vientiane morning market and she was supposed to leave it at the Morchit bus terminal in Bangkok.<< Quote
    Try another one darling!!
Sure the "boyfriend" left 12 millions worth of drugs beside a pole for her to pick up.................cheesy.gifcheesy.gif

So you obviously know better. Where's your evidence?

  11. I think the pound will be strong relative to the Euro, mainly for the reason because the economy is quite strong and the BoE will follow soon after the FED with interest rate hikes which will make the pound stronger. Whereas the Euro will stay weak because the ECB will leave interest rates at 0 for a while to come and continue to print money well into 2016.

So in summary: Long $, Long pound, short Yen, short Euro.

"mainly for the reason because the economy is quite strong "giggle.gif

Another one that has drunk the Kool-Aid

Britain is only " growing " thanks to consumer spending, which was the biggest source of GDP growth in 2014. But real incomes are now stagnating and much of this spending has been put on the credit card with consumer borrowing at its highest level since 2008 crisis.facepalm.gif

    http://money.cnn.com/2015/04/16/news/economy/uk-election-economy-fact-check/

Maybe time to wake up. You're a bit behind the times, historical data does not mean that what happened last year follows on automatically. There are many changing scenarios and the BoE really wants the £ to weaken so as to make exports more competitive in the eurozone, the UK'd biggest market. The strong £ also keeps interest rates near zero which helps the economy and increases spending power as any increases in income are not eaten up by inflation. However, with a recovering UK economy and increasing exports to other countries, see the latest figures and forecasts the only big issue that would affect the £ is if oil prices surged. As that is unlikely in the foreseeable future then sterling is not going to buck the trend anytime soon. However, the £/Baht is often an anomaly due to the Baht/$ relationship that has been mentioned in another post.

It is worth noting that on the Forex market Sterling, on 1/7/14 was at 55.5/Baht, it then sank to 48.8 on 6/4/15 a drop of over 15% and currently stands at 52.6, still over 5% lower than nearly a year ago but has gained over 12% against the baht in 10 weeks. Providing a currency is trending then you can follow it but beware of a big correction, either way.

  12. Air Asia gets two passengers from Don Meuang to Chiang Mai for THB 2'232, this includes 20kgs of luggage per passenger - no meal.

Thai Airways gets two passengers from Suvannaphoumit to Chiang Mai for THB 3'400, this includes 30kgs of luggage per passenger - snack out of a smelly cardboard box.

So, why is it, that Air Asia flies for years without moaning, struggling and completely overloaded incompetent company board while Thai Airways might be considered bankrupt by non-Thai standards.

The best value-for-money seems to be Bangkok Airways, THB 2'900 including 20kgs of luggage, a yummy snack, a friendly crew and very, very reliable. More than once they had to reshuffle operationally for whatever reasons, communicated perfectly and found solutions which were more than perfect alternatives.

Thai Airways, a perfect product 25 years ago when the passenger had no choice (all those other airlines did not exist then), should get back to the drawing board, fly other airlines and understand, that the passengers have the choice and - in Thai's case - tend to vote with their feet.

Above is domestic; long-haul is even worse, much worse, and will not be fixed with selling assets off :-(

If you want to compare airfares, don't pick dates where the TG fares might be highest.

How about picking something in July? I see multiple flights from BKK at 1400 Baht on July 18.

Based upon your logic, everyone else is a rip off.

I have flown Bangkok Airways in peak period and it is a mess. Long line ups, poor service and checkin kiosks that don't work. The airline is over priced.

I flew TG exclusively when it has J class. Now most of it is Thai Smile and I would rather go to DMK and fly Nok.

Anyway, your argument is years out of date. The launch of Thai Smile change the airfare structure.

Fly Nok! They are often late departing, also have a habit of cancelling flights and use the SAAB turboprop aircraft although that's no a problem but it limits the number of passengers significantly. Air Asia tend to leave on time or 2 minutes early and use the Airbus A320 which has been nearly full when I've used it.

  13. You do not say which hospital you consulted. Bangkok hospital have a very good ENT department and provide proper testing and consultation with one of their specialist professors. One of the leading providers of hearing aids is Eartone, they have 3 offices in BKK and are the Phonak distributor but have other brands too. Avoid the many and various consultants who often consist of a one man and his dog operation and quote you prices that are extortionate.

    Best of luck.

  14. I'm sure a police rank is the least of Thaksin's concerns.

Any thread with "Thaksin' included in the headline usually bring a torrent of vitriol. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and so am I.

The way I see it, Mr Thaksin was the previously, elected Prime Minister. Democratic elections in other words. The Political movement he ushered in, also won subsequent Democratic elections.......Thereby being a major threat to anti-democrats who are only Democratic if they win elections. He had to be eliminated and his Political enemies did just that, using the Judiciary as cover.

The minor legality they utilized is minuscule compared to the matter-of-course illegalities of their own people.

The anti-democrats are working hard to put this electoral genie and political reality back in the bottle. Their cascade of Thaksin demonization and Yingluck persecution is an indication of that...Sure to be parroted in Posts following this one, in addition to those attacking the messenger.

Without being sidetracked into the paranoia of the electorally fearful anti-Democrats regarding Mr. Thaksin, all that applies in my opinion is the legacy he left.....His electoral success has a sound basis. It is generally felt that after Thaksin assumed electoral power, things improved tremendously for a huge segment of the electorate..That has never been said of Politicians on the other side of the political divide....His and his people's electoral appeal has a sound basis therefore. The anti-democrats need to destroy that legacy and bury it in their own attacks, using the judiciary as a means of trying to legitimize their political posturing. They love the word 'fugitive' and use it at every opportunity. They must do this or be forever in the Political wilderness. In part trying to say money bought that success. Thereby conveniently separating electoral legitimacy from good Democratic practices and denigrating the voting public at the same time....A two-fer.

Alright, let the venom generated by the anti democratic political demonization machine and kill-the-messenger stuff commence.

What's your 'day job, fiction writer?

  15. This is a no brainer article.

Absolutely right. 'Foreigners who can be slung out of the country and lose everything just like that and Thais in fear of arrest and persecution tell bad-tempered autocrat who took over the country by force how happy they are.'

Thank you for pointing out the fact this article is a no brainer my dear friend and have a lovely day.

Foreigners could always be slung out of the country and lose everything just like that! So what's new? To save you some thinking effort remember, for instance, if you are here on a marriage extension and your wife dies you have 7 days to leave the Kingdom, unless you're old enough and have the wherewithal to scramble for a retirement extension.

  16. I love Ferangs in Thailand who complain about corruption yet readily accept all the positive results it provides them.

You are speeding, cop pulls you over, you pay a few hundred bht and are on your way,

Does that make you part of the corrupt system you complain,

would you rather pay 6,000 baht as you would in the west, points on your licence, and more expensive insurance?

Public servants complimenting their income with "tea money" because they are not paid enough.

You complain about the cost of living going up in Thailand,I wonder what better paid public servants would do to your cost of living?

Watch what you wish for you just might get it.

Your comments are relating to 'small beer'. I'm referring to the 7 figure cases that are under investigation by anti-corruption officials. Comparing apples with pears is ridiculous. Furthermore I've never paid tea money since first coming here in the 90's, didn't have any points on my home licence, and haven't complained about the cheap cost of living here either so don't assume and accuse. Engage brain or provide evidence before posting, keyboard warrior!

Do I take it you have been guilty of all of those that you are so quick to accuse someone else of?
