  1. Totally agree with slapout above. A while ago we had a similar banner setup in the village. Unfortunately it was placed directly at a junction in such a way that it was impossible to see oncoming traffic when you attempted to exit a side road.

Looks a though they may have hit the concrete post the banner was attached to.

They also place signs at a height suitable to scalp you over the pavements. Can only surmise that to qualify for the job you have to be sub 5 feet tall.

  2. Save your money and install Open Office 4, it's FREE and totally compatible with MS Office etc, etc. Furthermore it will be genuine s/w! Oracle is a very big provider of s/w including Java.

Check it out before you waste your time and money. You'll wish you changed to Open Office years ago.

  3. Why is no-one using the new online process?

It supposedly went live five days ago...................

Maybe, just maybe it's in some people's interest NOT to promote it if every visitor is charged (read fleeced) of 20> 50b a time under the counter?

    Just a thought?

What's this about 20 baht every time or do you just offer it? I've had to use 4 different Imm. offices and never paid once and don't know anyone else who has either.

  4. Post to arrive 2 weeks before....not 1.

To be posted 15 days before due date, check your facts. Also if it arrives before the due date they will on occasion give your next 90 day report from date received so you end up with, say 80 days. EMS usually takes no more than 3-4 days by road (Thursday to Monday over weekend) ) although if by air via Suvarnabhumi it can sit there for up to 10 days!

  5. I thought Vitamin D is produced when you are in the sun.....Would staying more in the sun help?

    You are right!!

If living in Thailand you won't need to take supplements. All you need to do is get out in the sun for between 15 - 20 minutes a day between 12.00 and 3.00 PM with about half of your body uncovered.

Doing it naturally is the best possible way (and its free).

As long as you don't get burnt, going a slight pinky colour is fine, then it is actually reckoned to be protective against a variety of cancers (including skin cancer believe it or not). If you are doubtful or unconvinced by what I am saying then feel free to check this out on the internet by putting the relevant words into a search engine and making an informed decision as to whether it is right for you - I do this myself BTW as I appreciate how dangerous being vitamin D deficient can be and am lucky enough to be residing in a country that has sun all year round.

You do not need to go out in the sun during the heat of the day and if you're fair skinned you'll burn. 30 minutes a day in the early morning and/or before sunset is quite sufficient. Wearing shorts, flip flops and shirtless of course!

As far as I'm aware taking vit D supplements is not the real answer and are mainly prescribed for the housebound.

  6. Oh nooo, more bad news for thai aviation.

Who will fly with any of them from now on? Not me or my collegues....

But this happened saturday? Then why it's in the news on tuesday??

Because the journalist are afraid of being shot by a certain prime minister/general.

Cheap shot, much? Member for nine years and 895 posts. That's a hundred posts a year. I think you are a troll.

Some of us have better things to do than spend our lives on TVF. Another kbd warrior generalising.

  7. First of all obtain a copy of Building Construction Illustrated by Francis Ching ISBN 0-471-35898-3. It is also available in Thai for you to show the builder what is needed.

Find a builder who is a native English speaker or has a very good grasp of English.

Don't rely on Thai architects to design your house, it will still be a Thai house come what may. Do the layout yourself, borrow ideas from houses in your home country and make sure it is aligned East West, faces South or North as the West wall will be the hottest. You can build the 'garage at that end to act as a heat sink. Use aerated concrete blocks throughout to reduce the heat.

There are lightweight galvanised steel rafters available from some companies for the roof. Designed from the plans and constructed on site. No welding and painting involved. Insulate under the tiles using the aluminium foil roll and have a 'dry' roof system with perforated soffits, no plaster used and with 6" insulation on top of the ceiling.

Double glazing will also help to keep the inside cooler but it's expensive here.

You'll probably need to act as Project Manager unless you're very lucky with the builder. Not to mention having to teach the workers how to fit things and use tools as well!!

If 3.5 million is just for the eco house then it should be possible, including fixtures and fittings. Quality always costs more!

    Been there and done it.

If you want more info PM me.

  8. i have had wills drawn up in the uk as well as thailand.if you want part of your estate to go to your son in the uk.you get one drawn up in the uk.you have a copy in english for him and have it translated in thai for your wife.

then as you want your wife to recieve 50% as well, you get one drawn up in thailand with a copy going to your son translated to english.

make sure you stipulate on both english/thai wills that you have made one in your own country as well as thailand.

funnerals in thailand are money making, where all the family and relatives come out of the woodwork to get what they can.

so tell your wife she and nobody else are to collect the ENVELOPES.

see other post about carving up the assets

see section 19 of the Condo Act in case you are thinking of leaving a condo to someone living outside of Thailand

PLUS UK law on death duties

    ohhhhhhhhhh headache

what i got in the uk.stays there and the same here.i have seen the bickering that goes on if you want to call it that.

so put it in black and white from the start.

then if your extended family want to fight so be it.no need for you to worry.coffee1.gif

I presume that you have taken due account of Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 ?

I guess that you have also taken care to cross-reference the Wills and ensure that one Will does not negate the other. You can, obviously, only have one last Will and testament if you have revoked all others.

I have two Wills one in the UK with the UK executors that takes care of all my assets there and cross refers that it is not negated by my Thai Will or vice versa. A copy of it is kept with my UK Will writer. There is also a Thai Will that looks after my assets in Thailand and that is written in English and Thai on a paragraph by paragraph basis. It also cross refers to my English Will with the same reference about not negating it. As my wife is the main beneficial with only a small bequest to one other person she has a copy of the Will. The main assets are the house, land and bank accounts. As she has her own income and bank accounts there is no problem with my accounts being frozen.

  9. China is rising, the West in decline. The old empires are fading, just as the old European powers such as Britain, France, Germany faded in the 20th century to be replaced by the US and Russia, now those powers wane as well. Asia is the future, and China will be the major power in that realignment....

China has its own problems if you care to check. However, they are trying to do something about it. Not sure what the US is doing about its own problems apart from spending ever more and more $'s.

  10. You will have to like very much the all wheel drive system and the sport handling to appreciate Subaru. Comparing with any other brand, only to the much expensive Audi or Range Rover. It is true that imports brands like GM, Ford, Hunday, Suzuki, and Subaru, and others, may leave the Thai market if cannot compete with other brands. That's the risk. But also is true that Honda,Toyota and Isuzu are overpriced in Thailand. Nissan, instead, offers very nice cars and trucks for the money.

You forgot to mention the Mitsu Pajero Sport. Better equipped and cheaper too. They're certainly popular up in Isaan and the service centres are good too.

  11. Different taste but I would never live in a stand alone house in Thailand.

You have to build it like a fortress to avoid burglary.

There's good and there's bad mobaans, I prefer the good ones.

Not true. We built a house on a 30x30 m plot with walls all around, a gate and proper windows and doors uPVC double glazed, The neighbour across the road is a school for the handicapped with a village behind us 100m away. We do have security lighting but no need for anything else. Previously my wife lived in a detached bungalow in a small village.

  12. Sorry posts crossed- obviously not a new car.

Given the horrendous price of second hand cars , I would always go for a new one and 3 years warranty.

It's a completely different mind set as in many countries used cars are a real bargain. Here the roads are so bad , shocks and suspension are knackered in a couple of years. ( and of course the wear and tear of som tam on the upholstery )

After a couple of years! Do you deliberately drive into large potholes? Changed the suspension on my wife's car after 7 years, 40k and my Mitsu Lancer is still on it's original suspension after 8 years and 93k

  13. <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

Good thing they nailed him but what about the footer in the photo letting us know who is in the photo. What are Farang doing there Are they in the special investigative branch

Just a poor job of reporting but then again typical for a Thai

Likely embassy/consulate representatives from some of the countries the 1,053 forged passport represent...................wink.png

Agreed and some people are unable to read an article to the end and absorb the information that is clearly stated.

  14. Another waste of life. very sad.

A bus "parked" on the fast lane at 2am in the night.

    Recipe for desaster.

Have you ever seen flashlights, breakdown triangles. reflectors in this country?

    Very rare if at all!

    Its a madhouse.

I never drive in the night overland except for an emergency.

Sporadic unavoidable 16 km home rides from the district town in the dark is just enough for me.

I stare to the dark hoping to see "the unlighted object" before I hit it.

Yes, there is a large red triangle in the boot of my car that I brought from England! However, on the one occasion I had cause to use it, due to a flat tyre a Thai driver who had to avoid it became irate, waving his fist and bad mouthing as he drove past!
